BIODIVERSITY IS LIFE –
The Miraculous Web of Life Sustains ALL Species on Planet Earth – Healthy Ecosystems, Healthy Humans. WITHOUT NATURE WE DO NOT EXIST. PERIOD.  To the degree Nature is sick, so are we.  We humans must reintegrate into the greater web of life as a species within it and not separate from it, by returning to respect and restoring balance and harmony to that which supports all life on this planet ... Nature ... #GDP should be replaced by #EcoEconomics ... Putting front and center the concerns for how we are destroying and objectifying the natural world for profit  #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Forests #Environment #Biodiversity #Ecoeconomics #CSR #GDP #Anthropocene

THE ECONOMICS OF THE ILLEGAL WILDLIFE TRADE :  ONE OF THE MOST LUCRATIVE, DESTRUCTIVE BLACK MARKETS IN THE WORLD

The illegal trade of animals or animal parts has become one of the most lucrative black market activities in the world. Driven by the promise of high profit margins, poachers in Africa – namely militias, armed groups, and insurgent groups – have driven rhinos and elephants close to extinction, while murdering hundreds of park rangers in the process.  NGOs and governments now face a race against time to reduce demand for wildlife trade, particularly in Asia, as well as to equip those on the frontline to fight a well-armed enemy.... http://www.economywatch.com/economy-business-and-finance-news/the-economics-of-the-illegal-wildlife-trade.29-05.html

▶ GLOBAL URGENCY: TACKLING THE ILLEGAL TRADE IN WILD ANIMALS The grisly trade in wild animals is underpinned by slaughter, smuggling and money-laundering. It's time to get serious

Elephant poaching in the African continent is now at its highest for 20 years, with an estimated 25,000 elephants killed in 2011.

Illegal trade in wildlife has now reached a scale that poses an immediate risk to wildlife and to people. Over the past five years, we have seen a dramatic spike in the poaching and illegal trade in elephants and rhinos. In 2011 an estimated 25,000 elephants were poached across Africa and in South Africa alone 668 rhinos were lost to poachers in 2012.... http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/blog/2013/mar/01/cites-animals-illegal-trade

TROPHY HUNTING IS BACK IN ZAMBIA

WHEN KILLING WILDLIFE BECOMES AN ECONOMIC BOON

Zambia’s 2013 ban on hunting has been lifted, its Minister of Tourism and Arts, Jean Kapata, has announced. This means hunting wildlife, with the exception of big cats, is now legal across the 19 hunting blocks. Hunting elephants, though, will be allowed. This news comes at the same time as new research has revealed that an estimated 100,000 elephants in Africa were killed for their ivory between 2010 and 2012 and elephant population numbers are declining by two per cent to three per cent a year. This effectively means that more of the animals are being killed than are being born. http://www.wildlifeextra.com

ECOCIDE: IT'S TIME TO TREAT ILLEGAL WILDLIFE TRADE LIKE A SERIOUS CRIME. A new U.N. report calls for international collaboration to fight the crime organizations behind illegal trading in wood and wildlife. It’s difficult to put an exact value on the clandestine trade in timber and animals, but estimates from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, the UN Environmental Programme and INTERPOL range from $70 to $213 billion U.S. dollars per year. Steiner said these numbers are very likely an underestimate. http://www.treehugger.com/endangered-species/its-time-treat-illegal-wildlife-trade-serious-crime.html

In the eastern reaches of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, that can often mean another round of violence and ethnic murder is under way. In this case, however, something even more horrific was afoot.

▶ CULLING ELEPHANTS LEAVES AN IMPACT ON THEIR SOCIAL STRUCTURE DECADES LATER.  Scientists are finding that past African elephant culling operations, despite having ended decades ago, have greatly impacted surviving elephant populations and dramatically disrupted their social behavior. Researchers from the University of Sussex studied and compared the social behavior of two elephant herds: one that was severely affected by 1970 and 1980 culling operations and a herd that was relatively unaffected. In their results, published in the journal Frontiers in Zoology, researchers Prof. Karen McComb and Dr. Graeme Shannon found that the elephant herds that had experienced culling operations exhibited signs of post traumatic stress disorder. http://news.mongabay.com/2014/0530-mark-elephants-killing.html

14 Pygmy Elephants Die Mysteriously in Borneo - Clearing Forests - Elephants become "Pests"

14 Pygmy Elephants Die Mysteriously in Borneo - Clearing Forests - Elephants become "Pests" | BIODIVERSITY IS LIFE – | Scoop.it

Jan 31, 2013 NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Fourteen endangered Borneo pygmy elephants died of mysterious causes, conservationists.

Malaysian authorities discovered a group of elephant carcasses close together in the Gunung Rara Forest Reserve, located in the northeastern corner of Borneo (map), a Southeast Asian island shared by Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei.

"We don't know officially yet how they died, but what we do know is this is an area of forest that is being cleared for plantations, and it's very common that when the forest is cleared, conflict between humans and elephants spikes," said Long.

For instance, in agricultural areas in neighboring Sumatra, people have put out poisoned fruit for elephants to eat, causing a whole herd to drop dead in one area. The poison is usually whatever is locally available, such as rodenticide, he said.

Jane Goodall: Ivory sales must stop or Africa's elephants could soon be extinct | BIODIVERSITY IS LIFE – | Scoop.it

The conservationist accuses China of fuelling poaching, as tusks are smuggled out in diplomatic bags

December 15, 2012 - The Guardian Jane Goodall, one of the world's greatest conservationists, has made an impassioned plea for a worldwide ban on the sale of ivory to prevent the extinction of the African elephant.

Her call follows the seizure in Malaysia last week of 24 tonnes of illegal ivory and a report by conservationists warning that the illegal ivory trade now threatens governments as rebel groups use the sale of tusks to fund their wars.

"A massive tragedy is unfolding in some parts of Africa. This is desperately serious, unprecedented," she said. "We believe that Tanzania has lost half its elephants in the last three years. The Connection Between Species Extinction, Organized Crime, and the Spread of Disease - Poaching

The Connection Between Species Extinction, Organized Crime, and the Spread of Disease - Poaching | BIODIVERSITY IS LIFE – | Scoop.it

Dec. 8, 2012 - Huffington Post Green

THE CONNECTION BETWEEN SPECIES EXTINCTION, ORGANIZED CRIME, AND THE SPREAD OF DISEASE: POACHING

There is no lack of reasons to join efforts to stop wildlife trafficking. Together, we need to protect the source, break the chain and stop demand.

This year alone (2012), we anticipate that 30,000 African elephants will be killed for their ivory. It is estimated that 448 black rhinos were poached in 2012 in South Africa to meet the demand for their horns in Southeast Asia and China. Today, only 3,200 tigers remain in the wild because so many have been killed for their parts. More than 25 million individual sharks will be killed this year for their fins, including many from endangered species.,,

In A Tanzanian Village, Elephant Poachers Thrive : NPR | BIODIVERSITY IS LIFE – | Scoop.it
In an impoverished country, elephant poaching is a quick way to make big money. A pair of poachers explain how they track and kill elephants in one of Africa's top game reserves.

October 25, 2012: NAIROBI

Scientists tell us that elephants have death rituals. They will, for instance, cluster around a dead individual and touch the carcass with their trunks, and then return much later to caress the bones.

"Sometimes when they have a funeral, it's like a party for me," he says. "You shoot one, and before he dies the others come to mourn for the one who is injured. And so I kill another one, and kill another one." ..  http://www.npr.org/2012/10/25/163629043/in-a-tanzanian-village-elephant-poachers-thrive

The Economics Of The Illegal Wildlife Poaching Trade - One Of The Most Lucrative, Destructive Black Markets In The World

The Economics Of The Illegal Wildlife Poaching Trade - One Of The Most Lucrative, Destructive Black Markets In The World | BIODIVERSITY IS LIFE – | Scoop.it

May 29, 2013 Economy Watch

THE ECONOMICS OF THE ILLEGAL WILDLIFE TRADE

- ▶ WILL ELEPHANTS STILL ROAM EARTH IN 20 YEARS?   -- At the start of the 1980s there were more than a million elephants in Africa. During that decade, 600,000 were destroyed for ivory products. Today perhaps no more than 400,000 remain across the continent, according to Samuel Wasser of the University of Washington, who is widely recognized as an authority on the subject. It is a tragedy beyond reckoning and humanity needs to pay attention to the plight of the elephants before it is too late.

Poverty, as well as Greed killing Africa's Elephants - 10,000 Massacred in Gabon alone. | BIODIVERSITY IS LIFE – | Scoop.it

Dec. 26, 2012 - New York Times

Gabon’s government has made efforts to combat poaching, but as the price of ivory soars its elephants are being slaughtered.

The consequences of the soaring price of ivory are affecting longtime wildlife champion Gabon, where 10,000 elephants have been slaughtered over the past several years by criminals and poor hunters. "It is a story of temptation -- and exploitation -- and it shows that the problem is not just about demand, but about supply as well. Poverty, as well as greed, is killing Africa's elephants," writes Jeffrey Gettleman. The New York Times

Why It's Time To Ban The Ivory Trade For Good - Poaching - The End of Elephants | BIODIVERSITY IS LIFE – | Scoop.it

More than 25 million individual sharks will be killed this year for their fins, including many from endangered species.,, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-cristian-samper/the-connection-between-sp_b_2220725.html

pdjmoo's insight:

Slaughtering our elephant and rhinos for two small pieces of ivory, destroying their matriarch families for the sake of profit MUST END. Then  we are decimating shark populations just for their fins and tigers for their mythical healing parts, deforestation killing off all life within them for logging and palm oil...WHERE DOES IT STOP?

RHINO KILLINGS

EWN’s Matshidiso Madia spends sometime at Haartzhoogte lodge where 11 rhino were poached in the space of 6 weeks...

In South Africa anti-poaching groups, breeders and government are in a losing global battle against rhino poachers – the number of rhinoceros’ killed by poachers has escalated from 13 in 2007, to 528 in the first eleven months of 2012.

For many rhino farmers like Spamer and Haartzhoogte owner Braam Van Greuning’s family, this attack signals an ending - an end to the relationship they had with all 29 rhino, an end to watching the calves fill up the reserve’s watering hole and wandering into the camp sites. It also signals the end to a much needed breeding programme that helped increase the numbers of a dying species....

Until someone comes up with a viable plan of action, South Africa and the rest of the continent will remain on a slippery slope towards a world with only the big four to show off.

More than 12,000 elephants are poached (slaughtered) every year in Africa - for just their tusks | BIODIVERSITY IS LIFE – | Scoop.it

Once common throughout Africa and Asia, elephant numbers were severely depleted the 19th century, largely due to the massive ivory trade. While some populations are now stable, poaching and habitat destruction continue to threaten the species... http://wwf.panda.org/what_we_do/endangered_species/elephants/
