BIODIVERSITY IS LIFE –
The Miraculous Web of Life Sustains ALL Species on Planet Earth – Healthy Ecosystems, Healthy Humans. WITHOUT NATURE WE DO NOT EXIST. PERIOD.  To the degree Nature is sick, so are we.  We humans must reintegrate into the greater web of life as a species within it and not separate from it, by returning to respect and restoring balance and harmony to that which supports all life on this planet ... Nature ... #GDP should be replaced by #EcoEconomics ... Putting front and center the concerns for how we are destroying and objectifying the natural world for profit  #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Forests #Environment #Biodiversity #Ecoeconomics #CSR #GDP #Anthropocene

-▶ LAND GRABBING FOR BIOFUELS MUST STOP

Zainab Kamara is one of several thousand farmers in Sierra Leone whose lands have been taken over by the Swiss company Addax Bioenergy for a 10,000 hectare sugar cane plantation to produce ethanol for export to Europe. "Now I don’t have a farm. Starvation is killing people. We have to buy rice to survive because we don't grow our own now," she says.1
In neighbouring Guinea, peasants are trying to understand how their government could have possibly signed off 700,000 ha of their lands to an Italian company to grow jatropha for biodiesel.2... http://www.grain.org/article/entries/4653-land-grabbing-for-biofuels-must-stop

▶  ILLEGAL LAND CLEARING FOR COMMERCIAL AGRICULTURE RESPONSIBLE FOR HALF OF TROPICAL DEFORESTATION. A comprehensive new analysis says that nearly half (49%) of all recent tropical deforestation is the result of illegal clearing for commercial agriculture. The study also finds that the majority of this illegal destruction was driven by overseas demand for agricultural commodities including palm oil, beef, soy, and wood products. In addition to devastating impacts on forest-dependent people and biodiversity, the illegal conversion of tropical forests for commercial agriculture is estimated to produce 1.47 gigatonnes of carbon each year—equivalent to 25% of the EU's annual fossil fuel-based emissions. http://www.enn.com/top_stories/article/47822

FOOD OR FUEL? THE PROBLEM WITH BIOFUELS, AGROFUELS, BIODIESEL:

No Matter which way you cut the case the idea of biofuels, although glowing, is not "sustainable" and is tied to big profits in commodity trading, agriculture and the devastating global landgrabbing.

Nature requires a balanced, biodiverse ecosystem in order to maintain her balance and support for all life on this planet.

Monoculture crops destroy biodiversity with it's genetically engineered gene-altering technology that requires lashings and lashings of pesticides and chemicals to produce, creating a sterile environment where no life but the crop can survive.

The land grab issue is of deep concern, for once you own the land you can do what you want with it, including redirecting water rights and poisoning the soil (and water).  The end result: the local environment, biodiversity and ecosystems (including animal life) is disappeared, leaving a barren rotating, monoculture crop designed for export.

This type of thinking destroys cultures, local communities and our biosphere contributing to climate change, more poverty, higher food prices and fueling the commodity markets for profit and quarterly bottom lines.

So let's rethink what we are doing with the rush for more biofuels.

Emma Bryce: Conservationists warn that biofuels pose huge problems for habitats already severely marginalised by agricultural change.

A collection of satellite-imaged maps now confirm what were once only rumours: between 2006 and 2011, farmers in the United States' corn belt - an amber swath of land encompassing North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Iowa – converted 1.3m acres of temperate grassland and wetland into soybean and corn crops for biofuel.... http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/blog/2013/mar/01/biofuel-habitat-loss-usa

The Curse of Industrial Farm Fertilizers and Runoff Creating Devastating Web of Pollution

The Curse of Industrial Farm Fertilizers and Runoff Creating Devastating Web of Pollution | BIODIVERSITY IS LIFE – | Scoop.it

May 2013 National Geographic

▶  OUR FERTILIZED WORLD

If we don’t watch out, agriculture could destroy our planet. Here’s how to grow all the food we need with fewer chemicals.

N. Nitrogen. Atomic number seven. Unnoticed, untasted, it nevertheless fills our stomachs. It is the engine of agriculture, the key to plenty in our crowded, hungry world.

Enter modern chemistry. Giant factories capture inert nitrogen gas from the vast stores in our atmosphere and force it into a chemical union with the hydrogen in natural gas, creating the reactive compounds that plants crave. That nitrogen fertilizer—more than a hundred million tons applied worldwide every year—fuels bountiful harvests.

Yet this modern miracle exacts a price. Runaway nitrogen is suffocating wildlife in lakes and estuaries, contaminating groundwater, and even warming the globe’s climate. As a hungry world looks ahead to billions more mouths needing nitrogen-rich protein, how much clean water and air will survive our demand for fertile fields?... http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2013/05/fertilized-world/charles-text

Benny Haoxiang Liang's curator insight, December 11, 2013 8:47 PM

The econimic contrast between Africa, the United States, and China is staggering.  From using by far excessive amounts of fertilizer in China, measured in hundreds of pounds per acre, to Africa, where the amount used is measured in handfuls.  Overuse of fertilizer is an issue that definitely needs to be addressed.  Algal blooms flowing down rivers have the potential to cripple the economies of sea-driven towns.

A Global Urgency: Tackling the illegal trade in wild animals

A Global Urgency: Tackling the illegal trade in wild animals | BIODIVERSITY IS LIFE – | Scoop.it

March 1, 2013 - The Guardian Environment

The grisly trade in wild animals is underpinned by slaughter, smuggling and money-laundering. It's time to get serious

Elephant poaching in the African continent is now at its highest for 20 years, with an estimated 25,000 elephants killed in 2011.

Illegal trade in wildlife has now reached a scale that poses an immediate risk to wildlife and to people. Over the past five years, we have seen a dramatic spike in the poaching and illegal trade in elephants and rhinos. In 2011 an estimated 25,000 elephants were poached across Africa and in South Africa alone 668 rhinos were lost to poachers in 2012.... http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/blog/2013/mar/01/cites-animals-illegal-trade

GRAIN — Land grabbing for biofuels must stop

GRAIN — Land grabbing for biofuels must stop | BIODIVERSITY IS LIFE – | Scoop.it

Feb 21, 2013 - GRAIN

Zainab Kamara is one of several thousand farmers in Sierra Leone whose lands have been taken over by the Swiss company Addax Bioenergy for a 10,000 hectare sugar cane plantation to produce ethanol for export to Europe.
"Now I don’t have a farm. Starvation is killing people. We have to buy rice to survive because we don't grow our own now," she says.1
In neighbouring Guinea, peasants are trying to understand how their government could have possibly signed off 700,000 ha of their lands to an Italian company to grow jatropha for biodiesel.2... http://www.grain.org/article/entries/4653-land-grabbing-for-biofuels-must-stop
