Paying Dues at Work or Investing in the Future?

Paying Dues at Work or Investing in the Future? | #BetterLeadership | Scoop.it
Paying dues at work is a mindset that keeps you stuck. Choose to fully show up, engage and change to and start investing in your future.
AlGonzalezinfo's insight:

Great post here via @AlliPolin on the choice of investing in our future instead of sleepwalking through our careers.

From the post:

"Instead of being a leader who’s focused on paying your dues at work, you can be a leader who intentionally creates a meaningful legacy through powerful present choices and a commitment to co-creating the future.

I invite you to shift your mindset and consider that every choice you make today is not predetermined and simply paying your dues, but actually investing in an unfolding adventure."

Safe Methods of Naturally Raising Your Testosterone Level

Safe Methods of Naturally Raising Your Testosterone Level | #BetterLeadership | Scoop.it
A shortage of testosterone can be a source of worry for many men, for many reasons, such as a loss of muscle mass, debilitating bone density over the years, a hindered sex drive (often resulting in erectile dysfunction) and, new research suggests, even the chances of developing prostate cancer and heart disease. It might seem […]
AlGonzalezinfo's insight:

Excellent post here via @Fitazine.  This is a tricky area that requires a bit of education and attention.  Specially since there is A LOT of risks when taking testosterone boosters!

No matter how much you work out, or even compete, here is a section on a common issue that will always affect you:

The first step is an obvious one, you may not want to hear it but weight loss is a solid foundation upon which to build your testosterone levels.

An upsurge in body weight, particularly around the gut, can increase estrogen levels, whilst decreasing testosterone levels.

Five Reasons to Start an Online Community

Five Reasons to Start an Online Community | #BetterLeadership | Scoop.it
Creating an online community  can be so rewarding. One of the first steps is to get in the mindset of your target audience and define what it is you want he or she to gain from your community. Do yo…
AlGonzalezinfo's insight:

We can help others deal with situations they may be facing and need help with by providing an online community that shares relevant content, tools and tips.

Here is another great reason:

  1. To Fix a Problem

If I had a dollar for every time I looked online for a solution to a problem or a quick fix, I could probably retire! The Internet is so accessible that most people reach for the keyboard before the user manual.

Establish an online community as an expert of something you love or create a question and answer forum for specific issues/needs – cooking tips, smart phone fixes, travel and vacation ideas, etc.

Do you have any online community ideas like the ones above? Tell me about them in the comments section below.

Great scoop here via @CelineSchill.

I really agree with this statement:

Momentum is one of the hardest aspects of change: you can easily create disturbance, but like ripples on the water, it soon fades away. True change requires momentum over time, and that can only be generated from within the community, not input from outside.

It's socially created and socially moderated, so almost by definition, it requires engagement from the community.

How Your Decision Making Skills Can Make or Break You

How Your Decision Making Skills Can Make or Break You | #BetterLeadership | Scoop.it
AlGonzalezinfo's insight:

Leaders Style

This decision-making process places high importance on gathering information and gaining the support of other people affected by the decision.

Leaders hold themselves accountable for their decisions even in the face of catastrophic setbacks. They continuously reach for bold and ingenious solutions, which energizes them and keeps them and their supporters committed.

If you don't do this, you may be a boss or an executive, but, NOT a leader.

What it takes to be a great leader ~ sorry, nothing new here...

What it takes to be a great leader ~ sorry, nothing new here... | #BetterLeadership | Scoop.it

Via Christine Heine
AlGonzalezinfo's insight:

I don't usually do this but I reacted quite strongly to the premise made in this video about three "new" ways of thinking that will shape leaders into the next century.

At best, the speaker has verified some classic themes that are covered in most if not all of the traditional leadership development programs that exist today.

Below are the 3 main "breakthroughs" that I heard from the speaker and my thoughts on how I have learned and practiced these "new" leadership themes.

1. Leaders see beyond the current situation and prepare for upcoming  change...  This is what scenario planning is ALL about.

* Scenario Planning accounts for many factors that may combine in complex ways to create surprising futures.  This has been written about and practiced for DECADES.

2. A diverse network...  Hummm...  I think this is what most HR departments are trying to instill in their organizations.

Now, if the speaker had gotten into the immense difficulty of going from diverse to inclusive, I would have given her this one.  But, no, just more talk about how we need to work and understand people who think differently than we think.  Not new...

3. Courage to make a change and persistence to stay the course while others are telling you it is not going to work.  Hummmm...  Really?  This is NOT covered in the current leadership development programs?

I usually scoop content that I feel is helpful, not this time.  If you are new to leadership development, maybe this is worthwhile.  If you are educated in leadership, take the 10 minutes and practice how to provide honoring feedback.

The One Thing You Need To Stop Doing To Become A Great Communicator

The One Thing You Need To Stop Doing To Become A Great Communicator | #BetterLeadership | Scoop.it
AlGonzalezinfo's insight:

Good scoop here via @kittengeorge

The S.T.O.P. model is very interesting and the following guidelines are very helpful:

  • Design – 1. Minimum size font should be 30. 2. The maximum number of words on any given slide is 16.

  • Timing – 1. For every 20 minutes of presentation, use no more than15 slides. 2. Schedule in breaks every 10 minutes of your presentation. Our brains can only concentrate for 10 minutes without shutting off. Use exercises, role plays and videos to allow the audience to reset.

  • Speaking – 1. Don’t play 20 questions. Never finish with a standard q+a session. Budget in time to take questions, then finish with a story and a strong closing statement. 2. Go beyond words when communicating feelings. Words only account for 7% of the meaning, whereby body language accounts for 55% and tone 38%.

AlGonzalezinfo's insight:

On a cold and rainy day our bus driver told us with joy and emotion:

"Just remember folks, its great to be alive!"

Then from a few rows behind, a grumpy and angry student yelled with a pedantic tone:

"Keep telling yourself that buddy..."

This was followed by silence.

As many of us got of the bus, we thanked the driver for reminding us to be grateful.

While many may put me down, I chose to lead like our bus driver did and bring joy to with me and lead with courage.

But, most importantly, I will avoid being like the grumpy student who gave in to misery and chose to put a good person down in front of others.

Thanks for sharing everyone!

Leaders, 5 Times When Logic Will Fail You | #Leadership

Leaders, 5 Times When Logic Will Fail You | #Leadership | #BetterLeadership | Scoop.it
by Kate Nasser, The People Skills Coach™

Logic is a tremendous asset. It brings order out of chaos. It diagnoses and solves problems. Yet like any asset, it can become a liability when misapplied or skewed.

Via David Hain
AlGonzalezinfo's insight:

Great post here by  @Kate Nasser, The People Skills Coach™.

As a communication professional, I could not agree more with the following:

5. When you use it as a reason not to communicate. After a mishap have you ever said, "Didn't they know that already? It's just common sense. It's logical."

Not only does common sense not actually exist, logic has little value if not communicated.

Great leaders communicate with their teams. They don't label their assumptions as logic that everyone should know.

John Michel's curator insight, July 15, 2014 7:59 AM

In the early stages of creativity, logic limits the panorama and possibilities. Logic is a filter. If you filter too soon, novel ideas will not make it onto the canvas. Great leaders don't fear the chaos of creativity. They filter later.

How Behavioral Coaching Moves You From Good To Great

How Behavioral Coaching Moves You From Good To Great | #BetterLeadership | Scoop.it
AlGonzalezinfo's insight:

Great post here by Giant Leap Consulting on coaching through behavioral change.

Here are two critical steps:

7. Develop an ongoing follow-up process. The one key point of the follow-up is to answer the question, “Based on my behavior last month, what ideas do you have for me next month?”Notice it doesn’t focus on mistakes that might have been made. It focuses solely on the future and is positive. Then within 6 months ask the stakeholders to complete a two to six question mini-survey to determine whether the client has become more or less effective in the behavior he or she is working on.

8. Review the results and start again. It’s rare that a client doesn’t experience remarkable improvement. This process works when the client is serious and really wants to improve. The next step is to build upon this success by identifying the next behavior to improve. The continued cycle of success results in greater effectivness for the client.

The Bully was ME! Twice!

The Bully was ME! Twice! | #BetterLeadership | Scoop.it
AlGonzalezinfo's insight:

As a kid, I was an overt and mean bully. As a manager, I learned ways of bullying covertly by hiding behind my rank. Although I may not have been as bad as other bosses, I was still a bully and very good at getting away with it.

In both situations, albeit years apart, I found ways to justify my behavior. I felt entitled to my actions! I was wrong both times and had to look in the mirror long and hard to face up to the fact that it was ME who needed to change.

Rise and Fall of Leadership

Rise and Fall of Leadership | #BetterLeadership | Scoop.it

Few concepts have received such widespread attention over the last two decades as that of leadership. Below, Guido Stein discusses the complicated balance between leadership and results, and considers the qualities that make a great leader.

AlGonzalezinfo's insight:

Excellent scoop here via @RogerFrancis1.  Professor Stein does a wonderful job of showcasing how leadership is different than being a manager.

From the post:

Influence. Leadership can be measured in terms of the influence the leader exercises over others, so that they do what the leader wants them to do and even want what the leader wants. Exercising such influence must come naturally, as in the phrase attributed to Margaret Thatcher: “Being in power is like being a lady. If you have to remind people that you are, you aren’t.”

Lisa McCarthy's curator insight, July 7, 2014 9:01 PM

Leadership can be induced in individuals but it cannot be mass-produced. At the pinnacle, leadership is conferred on the leader by others, whereas at the position level it is conferred by the company; at the second, third and fourth levels it is earned by the manager through his one-dimensional effort.
