The Unparalleled Interior of Belize

The Unparalleled Interior of Belize | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Brigitte de Graaff, a well known European blogger, wrote a great article about mainland Belize.  Unparalleled indeed.  Pook's Hill and Caves Branch are praised for their beauty.  Great article. Cayo is the best!

"The interior of Belize is characterized by endless diversity. High in the north, close to the border with Mexico, you will find an interesting mix of cultures that can be easily recognized by the rich cuisine. Spanish, Mexican and Asian influences are not to be missed and this region has a pleasantly rippling agricultural culture. Completely opposite is the west of the country, where you can attract yourself as an adrenaline junky. Deep in the jungle you can raft, zipline, cave and tube until you are completely tired and you will still have admired only a small part of all the beauty. This is also the place where you can visit many well-hidden Mayan ruins, or even spot wildlife."

214th Anniversary Of The Battle Of St. George's Caye

214th Anniversary Of The Battle Of St. George's Caye | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Decent article with a good lead in.  How about those fireworks Sunday night?

"A skirmish that pitted a ragtag group of British buccaneers and their slaves against a small flotilla of Spanish warships some 200 years ago was celebrated today in Belize with cultural performances, the installation of beauty queens and citizens’ parades.  What most historians describe as a myth, many Belizeans embrace as a defining moment in the history of the former British Honduras.  An incident that set the stage for continuing British occupation of territory that belonged to Spain, and eventual freedom on 21st September 1981 when Belize Independence was achieved."

To The Mountain

To The Mountain | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Fajina Archaeology Outreach's 'To The Mountain' is available online for free.  It's the story of some Classic Maya kids and their adventures around Xunantunich.  It's in Yucatec Maya, Spanish, and English.  Thanks, Fajina Outreach!

"In  these  pages,  you  will  find  a  story  about  two  fictional  Maya  kids   living  during  the  Late  Classic  Maya  period  (600  -  900  CE)  around  the   archaeological  site  of  Xunantunich,  Belize.  Originally,  Xunantunich  was   known as  Katyaatz Witz  ( Katyaats’ Wits’ ) or Clay Mountain. While fictional,  this story is based on documented archaeological information and many  cultural aspects of the ancient Maya.  For example, the building illustrated  on pages 33 and 37 is part of El Castillo acropolis and known as Structure  A-6-2nd.  Its  stucco  frieze  still  survives  in  part  at  El  Castillo  today."
