The Critical Engineer considers Engineering to be the most transformative language of our time, shaping the way we move, communicate and think. It is the work of the Critical Engineer to study and exploit this language, exposing its influence.

The Critical Engineer considers any technology depended upon to be both a challenge and a threat. The greater the dependence on a technology the greater the need to study and expose its inner workings, regardless of ownership or
legal provision.

The Critical Engineer raises awareness that with each technological advance our techno-political literacy is challenged. ...

Non conventional art, communication guerrilla, radical entertainment.

Presentations, screenings, workshops and action
At the Center of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona

The Influencers explores controversial forms of art and communication guerrilla, presenting independent projects that play with global popular culture, infiltrate the mass media, and transform fashions, consumption and technological fetishism.

The key to The Influencers is found in its guests and stories: impostors, pseudo-totalitarian musicians, conceptual hackers, deviant geographers, anarchitects and actors from invisible theatre. In these three days they are going to present their work, show known and less known material and speak with the public about challenges, goals and strategies.

With The Influencers, the border between disciplines is erased (since the message really is the message, and the medium is just a tactic), links between apparently distant projects are found, and bold genealogies are drawn between different countries and generations. Ambiguities are also explored and contradictions are discussed. In the manipulation of everyday symbols, as well as within what is excessive and politically incorrect, we will possibly find inspiration for changing the present and imagining the future.

The Influencers is curated by Bani Brusadin, Franco and Eva Mattes from 0100101110101101.

The Hacktory - Repurposing Technology, Making Art

The Hacktory - Repurposing Technology, Making Art | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

The Hacktory was formed in November 2007 by a group of art and technology enthusiasts who frequented monthly MakePhilly meetings. This group wanted to provide formal instruction in technical topics and a central meeting place with accessible, sophisticated tools. The first course offered, “Microcontrollers for Artists and Makers,” was an instant hit. Stan Pokras, the Executive Director ofNonprofit Technology Resources (NTR), quickly saw how The Hacktory could further his organization’s mission of bridging the digital divide and reducing e-waste and offered space to hold events, store shared equipment, and become The Hacktory’s fiscal sponsor.

The Hacktory has continued to provide classes and events that build our mission to inspire and empower people to use technology for their own personal expression. We want to reinforce the idea that our world is malleable – the devices and spaces we interact with everyday can be re-purposed and modified to create new experiences. ...

Recent studies have shown that the electrical resistance in soil above a buried carcass has a different resistivity to that of near by soil due to the decomposition of bodily tissue. The body leaves a “real”, quantifiable electrical trace when it is dead. Following this idea that traces of the dead can be measured via electricity it may be possible that these traces can be found elsewhere such as in the electromagnetic field.

In this workshop the construction of various electronic devices which apparently enhance the possibility of communication with spirits both audibly and visibly will be undertaken. Attempts at direct electromagnetic induction from such a vitalist earth to human brain will be made in the construction of a diy earth-brain interface, along with devices such as the Germanium Trans-Dimensional Communication Receptor (TDC) and other EMF detectors, emitters, and amplifiers.

Laboratoire Ouvert Lyonnais — le LOL — Lyon Open Laboratory

Laboratoire Ouvert Lyonnais — le LOL — Lyon Open Laboratory | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

School of Machines, Making & Make-Believe - art, technology, design, and human connection... | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

School of Machines, Making & Make Believe is a uniquely curated School born in Berlin, Germany in 2014, keen on inventing one-of-a-kind hands-on learning experiences in the areas of art, technology, design, and human connection. We embrace art, creativity and exploring the latest technology and ourselves with humility and curiosity.

In bringing together an ever-changing constellation of talented instructors, themselves distinguished artists, designers, makers and other professionals from around the globe, and providing a space where imaginations can run wild, our students come to us ready to expose their creative innards to the world in their own unique ways as they learn to work with new tools and people who can help make it happen.

We teach tangible skills like how to code, work with electronics and use digital fabrication tools while exploring concepts, narrative and play. Our goal is to help people take the fantastical ideas inside their heads out into the physical realm to further their artistic practice or to help wrestle out the confidence to begin one. We teach technology to artists and design, creativity, and art to the technology community.

Brighton Digital Festival 2013 has over 100 events celebrating digital creativity and innovation. What will you be attending this September?

Brighton Digital Festival is a grassroots festival and the majority of events are organised by members of Brighton’s digital and arts communities.

This network of independent organisers offers a huge and diverse programme that reflects the richness and variety of what goes on across the City. It also enables a festival at a scale that would be otherwise impossible.

The festival is coordinated by Wired Sussex, who support the network of organisers, provide a single voice for the festival, and look after the joined up communications and PR to help spread the word to audiences and participants.

This coordination takes place in association with Lighthouse, who produce a programme of exceptional art and education activities throughout the festival month.

A volunteer steering group made up of representatives from the wider BDF community guides the festival’s broader, longer-term direction and development. ...

THSF - Toulouse HackerSpace Factory - 22-26 Mai 2013 | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

ewaste workshop > Hacking Hardware & Recycling e-Waste since 2005 - Arduino, Max/Msp, Pure Data or Processing | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Our workshops offer participants to become familiar with basic hardware and software design while at the same time gaining hands-on experience making an interactive art project. The workshops are open to participants of different backgrounds, and no programming or electronic skills are required. The idea is to start from scratch and create a complete project by the end of the workshop, including concept, design, electronics / interfacing, and functional programming with Arduino, Max/Msp, Pure Data or Processing.

Deconstructing readily-available, cheap electronic devices into interactive tools is more than a lot of fun; the process offers the same visible, hands-on learning and understanding acquired through dissection. By re-purposing second-hand hardware or cheap toys, a commercial, mass-produced product is transformed into a unique device, with potential for new and original means of expression or communication. The boundaries of a  device are set by the manufacturer (planned obsolescence); those limits can be redefined by such creative recycling.
