"Your face is big data" by Egor Tsvetkov - Russian photographer matches random people with social network photos | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Yegor Tsvetkov uses neural networks to show the dangers of digital access...

With the use of neural networks, a photographer from St. Petersburg has matched people he met on the subway with their social network profiles and compared their real look with how they present themselves on the internet.

For six weeks Yegor Tsvetkov, a young St. Petersburg photographer, has been snapping random people and then identifying them on Russia’s biggest social network VKontakte with the help of the FindFace app (based on algorithms of self-learning neural networks). ...

Poor Media on Demand: All the files of Printed Web 3 /// Works from 147 artists - rhizome.org | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Works from 147 artists contribute in diverse ways to the web-to-print discourse.

Printed Web 3 is currently featured on the front page of Rhizome.org as a browsable Apache directory.

Earlier this year, I announced an open call for the third issue of Printed Web, a semi-annual publication dedicated to web-to-print discourse. I received a stunning array of files from recognized artists like Olia Lialina, Kim Asendorf, and Clement Valla, but the real beauty of the open call was connecting with a new group of people working with material found or created on the web —147 contributors in all. A particularly diverse view of networked culture formed on my desktop through an accumulation of notes, attachments, tweets, and downloads. Gathering this community around Printed Web was immensely satisfying for me, and I wanted to include every submission in the issue — but having received hundreds of PDFs, JPGs, PNGs, and GIFs, the logistical challenges to this have been considerable.

My intention had always been to publish all of the files received in a single print edition, but as submissions poured in, I decided that “scattering” the material across different networked versions would allow the project to occupy multiple positions in a way that suited its multiplicitous content.

What Does Sound Look Like? A clever photography trick... | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

When light passes between areas of different air density, it bends. You've probably noticed the way distant pavement seems to shimmer on a hot day, or the way stars appear to twinkle. You're seeing light that has been distorted as it passes through varying air densities, which are in turn created by varying temperatures and pressures.

In the mid-19th century, German physicist invented a photography technique called Schlieren Flow Visualization to visually capture these changes in density.

Panono: Panoramic Ball Camera

Imagine...

... you are at the beach with a group of friends. Some of you are surfing, some are building a bonfire, some are tossing around a frisbee, some of you are just lying around, and you want to capture this moment, your unique memory. With a traditional camera, you’d have to gather everyone together away from their fun, line everybody up, and take a picture that doesn’t even include you.
... you are playing in the park with your kids, the sun is shining, everyone is having fun. Wouldn't it be cool to share this moment with the grandparents?

Now the Panono Camera makes it possible ...

... to capture everything in every direction in a very high resolution image. Through your Panono Camera, you can freeze the surprise birthday party, the wedding dance floor, the football game, the best concert ever, or that amazing sunset in a whole new fascinating way.
... to share these incredible full-spherical images with others in a way that lets them easily explore and experience the memory as though they were present with you when you took the picture.

Michel De Broin - the forms of visual, spatial & technological paradox

Michel De Broin - the forms of visual, spatial & technological paradox | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Michel de Broin’s work ranges from assemblage to video and photography. His multifaceted production deals with energy flows, entropic devolution, and the forms of visual, spatial and technological paradox that derive from these forces. Most of his works are retooled everyday appliances: found objects that disclose an ironic re-utilization not only of the mechanic universe but also of tropes of Conceptual Art and Minimalism, which in his hands open hypothetical possibilities. Crafting unforeseen relationships between waste, productivity, risk, and consumption, de Broin defamiliarizes established modes of signification in everyday technical environments.

Once Upon a Time the Presidents - Olivier Ratsi, visual artist (antivj label). | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

In the run up to the presidential election a couple of week’s back, coverage of the race and the two nominees went to saturation point and beyond. Every conceivable, possible way of analyzing the two candidates, previous elections, and anything that had the word “president” in it had been ruminated over, pondered, chewed up, and spat out by the media—or at least it seemed that way. But they missed something, and they’re probably going to kick themselves when they hear the idea: creating digital glitch collage portraits of presidents from down the ages.

Lytro changed photography. Now can it get anyone to care? | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Lytro product director Colvin Pitts wants to show me the camera he’s been working on since 2007. He cautions that it’s just an early model, then gently lifts the stark, black device out of an unmarked box. It looks like a cross between a DSLR and a futuristic weapon. It’s big, with a wide round lens and a large grip, but it weighs less than 2 pounds and is perfectly comfortable in my hands. Its back face is slanted, like someone chopped off part of a larger camera to form this one. Its big, 4-inch touchscreen is glowing. I hold the camera up, point it at the black Sharpie on the table in front of me, and press the shutter. Nothing happens. I press it again. Still nothing. ...

Phracktography by Melissa Castro: Hacker Portraits For The Surveillance Age

Phracktography by Melissa Castro: Hacker Portraits For The Surveillance Age | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Photographer Melissa Castro uses VJ software to create experimental photographs of hackers.

For the uninitiated, Phrack is a widely circulated ezine written by and for the hacker community. It’s been around for the better part of three decades and when it doesn’t have its finger on the pulse of hacker culture and all that comes with it, it has it on the shutter button.

The finger in this instance belongs to photographer Melissa Castro. As someone who is concerned with issues of surveillance, she decided to create imagery influenced by its themes. “Surveillance and [the] invasion of privacy have been issues that concern me (I don't care that I've been called paranoid because I taped shut the front camera on my phone and also haven't yet signed up for Facebook)." she says, "And given the current NSA leaks, I felt that I needed to create imagery that conveyed that idea somehow.” ...
