01.05.2017 - Meetup VISQuébec et exposition «Graphiques dégénérés» #Dataviz | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Download 50+ Issues of Legendary West Coast Punk Music Zines from the 1970-80s: Damage, Slash & No Mag | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

If your understanding of early punk derives mainly from documentaries, you’re sorely missing out. As I wrote in a post yesterday on international treasure John Peel—the BBC DJ who exposed more than a couple generations to carefully-curated punk rock—finding such music before the internet could be a daunting, and exciting, adventure. Without a doubt the best way die-hard fans and curious onlookers could get a feel for the music, manners, and personalities of any number of local scenes was through magazine culture...

OpenDrop - #opensource digital microfludics platform for research purposes | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

OpenDrop is a new design for an open source digital microfludics platform for research purposes. The device uses recent electro-wetting technology to control small droplets of liquids. Potential applications are lab on a chip devices for automating processes of digital biology. How ever the present design should also open the technology to other field and allow experimentation to find new applications. Including the field of art, music, games and education.

The design approach chosen relies strongly on Do-It-Your-Self (DIY) and Low-Cost. To aim is to only use standard and widely-available components, materials, and production processes. We try to avoid parts that aren’t available to individual customers or processes that require expensive setup costs. Also all design files and software required to operate your hardware are shared under open licenses.

Paul Klee led an artistic life that spanned the 19th and 20th centuries, but he kept his aesthetic sensibility tuned to the future. Because of that, much of the Swiss-German Bauhaus-associated painter’s work, which at its most distinctive defines its own category of abstraction, still exudes a vitality today.

The POC21 Documentary - poc21.cc

POC21 is an international innovation community, that started as an innovation camp. The camp brought together 100+ makers, designers, engineers, scientists and geeks. In late summer 2015, we joined forces in a stunning French castle to prototype a fossil free, zero waste society. Our ultimate goal was to overcome the destructive consumer culture and make open-source, sustainable products the new normal. Over the course of 5 weeks we developed 12 sustainable lifestyle technologies and built an international community of innovators and supporters, that continues to grow.

Today is the third anniversary of the suicide of Aaron Swartz.

Aaron was one of my closest friends. That night was the worst of my life.

In the weeks and months that followed, many of his friends and family — and many people that never knew him personally — asked themselves and each other the same question: what’s the best way to honor Aaron’s death? ...

Malware is not only about viruses – companies preinstall it all the time / Richard Stallman | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it
Since I started free software in the 80s, developers have grown to routinely mistreat users by shackling behaviour and snooping – but we have ways to resist

In 1983, when I started the free software movement, malware was so rare that each case was shocking and scandalous. Now it’s normal.

To be sure, I am not talking about viruses. Malware is the name for a program designed to mistreat its users. Viruses typically are malicious, but software products and software preinstalled in products can also be malicious – and often are, when not free/libre. ...

OpenGLAM alerted me via Twitter that the entire digital collection of the Tate is available on GitHub. I haven’t heard of any other institution who makes their collection available through this platform. It does kind of give a lot away, but then again, that’s the whole point of open data.

Why not Linked Data, asks a fellow Tweeter and Tate’s web architect Rich Barrett-Small justifies their move to GitHub with it being the most time- and cost-effective solution to get the data out there – for now.

Yes, SPARQL endpoints are the weapon of choice these days, but what’s wrong with using GitHub? It’s an incredibly versatile platform by far not limited to programmers, but equally useful for thesis writing or democracy.

Vulkan Renderer - support to openFrameworks by Tim Gfrerer

Vulkan Renderer - support to openFrameworks by Tim Gfrerer | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Vulkan is a next generation graphics API, and set to succeed OpenGL and GLES. It’s a much more explicit API. It is a fundamental shift in rendering, and it allows a level of control and performance previously only possible on games consoles. With its sister standard SPIR-V it can revolutionise drawing, shading and compute.

It was released on February 16 this year, and there is already fairly solid driver support from most manufacturers.

  • In terms of programming, it’s like switching from JavaScript to C++: potentially faster, more explicit — and there's a chance you end up with undefined behaviour.

  • In terms of motoring, it's like trading in a Toyota for an unlimited supply of Ferrari car parts. You could build something to put the A-Team to shame, but it might take a really long time to hit the road.

  • In terms of child’s play, its like moving from Duplo to Lego. You can build things with much more attention to detail, but you might miss how quickly you could have built a simple wall with cruder bricks.

On parle d’économie linéaire.

Waste(d)! #festival | Art Meets Radical Openness - 25.05-28.05.2016 // #hacktivism #openculture #mediaart | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

The event is rooted in the successful Free Software movement of the early 2000s. In conjunction with the Austrian-wide initiative Linux Weeks, servus.at was a co-organizer from the beginning with an event in Linz (LiWoLi – “Linux Weeks Linz”)

The cultural, artistic and socio-political focus of the association, which is still marked by the spirit of the Free Software movement, has been systematically expanded with a new cooperation with the Institute for Time-Based Media (Art University Linz) beginning in 2008. Social, societal and political aspects arising from the pervasion of technology in everyday life are shifted into the foreground.

Consequent to a local development, the term “freedom” has been transferred in this context to culture and art, thus engendering a new title: Art Meets Radical Openness.

Art Meets Radical Openness

Festival dedicated to Art, Hacktivism and Open Culture

“Art Meets Radical Openness” is a community festival, an open lab, and a meeting point for artists, developers, hactivists, and idealists involved with the culture of sharing and communal production. They are catalysts that spark new discourses and open up new directions of thinking. Free Open Source Software, open tools in general and the use of free licenses are the precondition and basis for the digital practice of a community like this, which impels social transformation. This tangible transformation goes beyond a digital practice and also changes our real life.

Salvatore Iaconesi: Open-sourcing a cure for his cancer - By Alessandro Delfanti

Salvatore Iaconesi is an artist, interaction designer and hacker. He is the founder of the international network Art is Open Source, which works on the transformations brought about by ubiquitous digital technologies and networks. In 2012 he was a TED Fellow and is Eisenhower Fellow since 2013. With Oriana Persico, he teaches Interaction Design, Digital Design and Transmedia Narratives at La Sapienza University of Rome, ISIA Design Florence, Rome University of Fine Arts and IED Design institute.

In 2012, Iaconesi was diagnosed with brain cancer. He decided to hack and then publish his own medical data online and thus crowdsource his cancer, engaging people from all over the world to find a cure and to discover what it could mean to be cured in the information age. Through the website La Cura (The Cure), to this day he has received close to 900,000 messages from about 200,000 people.

Along with Alessandro Delfanti (Media@McGill Postdoctoral Fellow) and Patrick Dubé (SAT/CHU Sainte-Justine Living Lab), Iaconesi and Persico will be participating in Media@McGill’s panel on “Participatory Medicine,” Thursday, Feb. 13, at 5:30 p.m. in Leacock 232 (855 Sherbrooke Street West). The conference is free and open to the public. For more information, go here. The following is an interview Iaconesi did for the McGill Reporter.

In addition to the requisite vocal clips (“Houston, we’ve had a problem” and “The Eagle has landed”), you get a lot more. And in one nod to humanity, and not just American humanity, there’s the Soviet satellite Sputnik (among many projects that are international in nature).

Many of these sounds were available before; I’ve actually used a number of them in my own music. But putting them on SoundCloud makes them much easier to browse and find, and there are download links. Have a listen below...
