In the 1980s, Joi Ito traded in library tables at the University of Chicago for turntables at Chicago’s Smart Bar. But his attempt to evade academia wouldn’t stick.
The two-time college dropout became director of the MIT Media Lab in 2011, making the 50-year-old an academic administrator at one of the most renowned universities in the world. Before that, he was an entrepreneur who started a number of his own companies and invested in the likes of Flickr, Twitter and Kickstarter.
A proud supporter of “responsible disobedience” — the lab is awarding its first $250,000 Disobedience Award this July — Ito is in Chicago Wednesday as a Chicago Ideas speaker. He will appear with IDEO Chicago Executive Portfolio Director Neil Stevenson at an event to discuss Chicago’s role in “embracing culture, art and experimentation.”
Blue Sky talked to Ito — whose interdisciplinary media lab focuses on the creative use of digital technology, sciences, arts and design — about the disobedience mindset....
HyperNormalisation wades through the culmination of forces that have driven this culture into mass uncertainty, confusion, spectacle and simulation. Where events keep happening that seem crazy, inexplicable and out of control—from Donald Trump to Brexit, to the War in Syria, mass immigration, extreme disparity in wealth, and increasing bomb attacks in the West—this film shows a basis to not only why these chaotic events are happening, but also why we, as well as those in power, may not understand them. We have retreated into a simplified, and often completely fake version of the world. And because it is reflected all around us, ubiquitous, we accept it as normal. This epic narrative of how we got here spans over 40 years, with an extraordinary cast of characters—the Assad dynasty, Donald Trump, Henry Kissinger, Patti Smith, early performance artists in New York, President Putin, Japanese gangsters, suicide bombers, Colonel Gaddafi and the Internet. HyperNormalisation weaves these historical narratives back together to show how today's fake and hollow world was created and is sustained. This shows that a new kind of resistance must be imagined and actioned, as well as an unprecedented reawakening in a time where it matters like never before.

But massive FBI operations over the last year that have busted ‘hidden sites’ used for the sale of drugs, hacking tools, and child pornography suggest the digital criminal world has gotten lighter, with law enforcement bragging that criminals can’t “hide in the shadows of the Dark Web anymore.” While mysterious about its tactics, law enforcement indicated that it had found a way to circumvent the tool on which these sites relied, a software called Tor. But criminals are not the only ones who rely on it.

Recognised Faces is an internet application that generates a daily image of a face from images found via google’s lists of top search terms. Facial features in the found images are identified, using facial recognition technologies usually reserved for mass surveillance, before being combined into an image of a new face. After being generated these faces are used as the personal avatar of Kristoffer Ørum on his website, on various social networks and anywhere else his image might be indexed and scanned for facial features by intelligence agencies, commercial agents or other interested parties.
By constructing new faces from parts of the most looked upon images on the internet Recognised Faces creates a snapshot of the flow of data collection and facial recognition that happens daily on the internet, thus utilising facial recognition to generate phantom faces that reflect how computers perceive us as vaguely recognisable patterns in an ocean of data.

Le projet de loi Renseignement contient deux articles qui permettent une interception de l'ensemble des données de tous les citoyens français en temps réel sur Internet, dans le but de faire tourner dessus des outils de détection des comportements déviants. Cette surveillance massive de l'ensemble de la population est inadmissible : c'est une pratique dangereuse pour la démocratie et les libertés d'expression, de réunion, de pensée, d'action.

A partir du printemps 2013, Edward Snowden, ex-analyste contractuel de la CIA et de la NSA, a commencé à révéler l’invraisemblable ampleur des programmes de surveillance de l'agence de renseignement américaine. Sous le nom le code « CITIZENFOUR », il contacte la documentariste américaine Laura Poitras, elle-même surveillée et bloquée à de nombreuses reprises dans les aéroports depuis son documentaire My Country, My Country sur l'occupation américaine de l'Irak.
Poitras part rejoindre Snowden à Hong Kong avec le journaliste du Guardian, Glenn Greenwald, et réalise en temps réel CITIZENFOUR, un document historique unique et un portrait intime d’Edward Snowden, retranché dans sa chambre d'hôtel, alors qu'il s’apprête à remettre les documents secrets et à sacrifier sa vie personnelle pour défendre ce qu’il considère comme le pilier central des démocraties : le droit à la vie privée des citoyens.
Passionnant documentaire à la limite du film d’espionnage et du thriller, CITIZENFOUR a reçu l'Oscar du meilleur film documentaire en 2015.

Luther Blisset est une signature partagée par des centaines d’artistes et d’activistes à travers l’Europe et l’Amérique du Sud depuis l’été 1994. Pour des raisons qui restent inconnues, ce nom a été emprunté à un joueur de foot-ball d’origine afro-caribbéenne. Lequel a montré, avant et après quelques autres, que bien des footballeurs savent se servir de leur tête autrement qu’en l’enfonçant dans la poitrine de l’adversaire : lors d’une émission de la BBC, en 2004, il a manifesté son amusement pour cet usage de son nom, et brandi un exemplaire d’un livre de théorie critique signé Wu Ming. En Italie, entre 1994 et 1999, le « Luther Blisset Project », réseau organisé, devint un phénomène très populaire, réussissant à créer la légende d’un héros populaire. Un Robin des bois de l’information qui multiplia les canulars médiatiques durant cinq ans. On n’en citera que quelques-uns. En 1995, Harry Kipper, artiste conceptuel britannique disparaissait à la frontière italo-slovène lors d’un voyage à VTT mené dans l’intention de dessiner sur la carte de l’Europe le mort « ART ». Chi l’a visto ?, célèbre émission italienne (équivalente de « Perdu de vue »), tomba dans le panneau et se couvrit de ridicule. Harry Kipper n’avait jamais existé.
Le canular le plus complexe fut mis en œuvre dans le Latium, en 1997. Il dura un an. A grand renfort de fausses traces de rites, de communiqués jamais vérifiés par les rédactions, politiciens et journalistes de la presse écrite et télévisée furent poussés à développer les plus extravagantes théories sur la renaissance du satanisme. Le canular fut ensuite loué et analysé par des universitaires et des experts des médias, et devint un cas d’étude dans plusieurs textes scientifiques.
C’est ce que les activistes du Luther Blissett Project appelaient « la contre-information homéopathique » : en injectant une dose calculée de fausseté dans les média, ils visaient à montrer le manque de sérieux de beaucoup de créateurs d’opinion et le manque de fondement des climats de panique morale. Renversant la célèbre sentence de Debord (qu’ils n’apprécient guère), ils font en sorte que le « faux soit un moment du vrai ». Le canular final advint avec l’emprisonnement en Serbie du sculpteur et performeur serbe Darko Maver, tué ensuite par un bombardement de l’OTAN. Ses tableaux furent exposés à Rome et à Bologne et de prestigieux magazines artistiques publièrent un appel de solidarité. Certains critiques respectés prétendirent même connaître personnellement l’artiste. Il fallut attendre que Luther Blisset se fasse hara-kiri pour que la vérité soit révélée : Darko Maver n’avait jamais existé.
Au terme de ce plan quinquennal de dévoilement des mécanismes médiatiques, en 1999, le Luther Blisset Project se saborda, donnant naissance à des groupes divers. L’un d’eux fut 0100101110101101.org, groupe de média-artistes qui réussirent à convaincre la population de Vienne que Nike voulait racheter la Karlsplatz et la rebaptiser « Nikeplatz », ce qui entraîna les débats qu’on imagine en Autriche.
Un autre groupe fut constitué par quatre activistes bolognais qui, gardant le nom du footballeur, écrivirent Q. Publié en Italie en 1999, le livre a été édité ensuite en anglais (britannique et américain), espagnol, allemand, néerlandais, français, portugais (brésilien), danois, polonais et grec....

Currently the terms 'hacktivism', 'digital activism' and 'cyber activism' are frequently used by the various global media outlets, especially in connection with the social media-enabled protests taking place in the Middle East, Europe and elsewhere around the world. Hacktivism is a term that combines the words hacker and activism. It refers to the art of manipulating code and using computers for political purposes. These include mobilizing supporters, creating software that helps bypass censorship or bridge digital inequality, and supporting specific campaigns, organizations, and protests around the world using electronic disobedience or social mobilization. Hacktivism in its purest form is an information-age ideology which, depending on the political spectrum, can support: peer production as an alternative mode to capitalism, copyleft or open source software, direct or participatory democracy, and transparent government...
More than a year ago the Süddeutsche Zeitung was contacted by a source who was intent on staying anonymous. The source called himself “John Doe” and offered internal data belonging to the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca. The Süddeutsche Zeitung decided to analyze the data in cooperation with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). In the course of the research the cooperation was extended to include more than 100 media organizations from over 80 countries. The publication of the Panama Papers caused an enormous stir all over the globe: Politicians and functionaries had to resign, there was a large amount of public protest, and the stories led to raids and investigations in dozens of countries.
Now “John Doe”, the anonymous source, has sent the SZ a manifesto, which can be read as an explanation of his actions – and as a call to action. The manifesto and its inherent political stance had no editorial influence on the reporting by the SZ or of any of the other cooperating media organizations – nor will it influence them in the future. The SZ did not have to agree to any conditions concerning the reporting in order to receive the data of the Panama Papers.

Mais Paul Duan lui, y voit surtout la possibilité d’un monde meilleur. A 22 ans, ce génie revient des Etats-Unis avec la ferme intention de diminuer le chômage… rien qu’avec des algorithmes ! Explications.
Paul Duan est né à Trappes de migrants chinois qui ont fui la répression communiste. Excellent élève, il a eu un parcours exemplaire : le lycée de Buc dans les Yvelines, Sciences Po puis Berkeley, dans la Silicon Valley.
Là-bas, il crée en 2014 une ONG baptisée Bayes Impact. Son but ? « Faire de la Terre un endroit meilleur » grâce à une saine utilisation des données.
Ça peut sembler ambitieux mais, malgré son jeune âge, Paul Duan a déjà quelques succès à son actif : l’optimisation du trajet des ambulances de San Francisco et la prévention des risques dans les hôpitaux. Deux exemples qui sauvent des vies tous les jours rien qu’avec l’utilisation de données statistiques et informatiques !
The Kopimashin creates an endless amount of copies of a specific audio track (gnarls barkley’s crazy). The audio track is copied to /dev/null, a unix data pipe for avoiding permanent storage. The Kopimashins lcd display consists of three rows of information, the serial number of the mashin, amount of copies created and the dollar value it represents in losses for the record labels (Downtown Records / Warner Music), currently represented by USD1,25 per copied piece.
The goal of the kopimashin is to make the audio track the most copied in the world and while doing so bankrupting the record industry.

Benjamin Gaulon aka Recyclism est artiste, chercheur, enseignant à Parsons Paris The New School for Design. Dans chacune de ces activités, il s’attache à développer une approche créative et critique autour de la technologie, des médias et des modes de consommation qu’ils génèrent. Il organise également depuis 2005 des « e-waste workshop » où le public s’initie au circuit bending, au hardware hacking, ainsi qu’aux problématiques liées à l’obsolescence programmée : on y détourne du matériel en apparence obsolète pour recomposer ainsi de nouveaux objets électroniques. L’expérimentation pédagogique, envisagée comme mode de recherche, vient compléter l’arsenal des tactiques de cet artiste qui recycle, hack et détourne.

Created by Jonathan Fletcher Moore and Fabio Piparo, Artificial Killing Machine is an autonomous mechanical installation that uses the public database on U.S. military drone strikes to visualise deaths of individuals that would otherwise be represented purely as statistical data. When a drone strike occurs, the machine activates, and fires a children’s toy cap gun for every death that results. The raw information used by the installation is then printed. The materialised data is allowed to accumulate in perpetuity or until the life cycle of either the database or machine ends. A single chair is placed beneath the installation inviting the viewers to sit in the chair and experience the imagined existential risk.
