04.07.17 - Hack It! - Art Fest New Media Art #Hack

04.07.17 - Hack It! - Art Fest New Media Art #Hack | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Organized by Victoria Bradbury and the New Media 420 Advanced Interactive Design students

Hackathons first emerged in the commercial tech sector where people meet to engage in collaborative computer programming. Art Hacks branch off of this phenomenon while also stemming from art historical precedents of collaborative making practices in the New Media field. At this event, groups will combine computer code with traditional art materials to co-create projects. Hack It! DIY Dystopia will engage participants to combine code, microcontrollers and cardboard to envision, prototype and develop survival-oriented materials.

This event will involve two UNC Asheville classes. It is led by NM 420: Advanced Interactive Design with students from ARTS 178: Powerful Stories Freshman Colloquium as participants. Collaborative teams will work together for five hours to create a final techno-sculptural project considering the themes of survival and technology. (Anyone is welcome to come and observe the process while also participating in short-term hands-on activities on-site).

04>05.11.2016 > Blockchain. Fact. Fiction. Future - Symposium, Showcase & Hacklab by iMAL/LarbitsLab | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

An international symposium followed by a one-day hacklab dedicated to the issues at stake with the Blockchain technology.

Digital culture constantly generates new paradigms, mediums and technologies. Blockchain is one of those. Blockchain is the revolutionary system that underlies cryptocurrencies such as BitCoin, the first decentralised digital currency for which it was created. But the potential uses of blockchain extend far beyond its initial purpose, turning upside-down numerous fields, from finance to collaborative economics, from medias to creative industries, not to mention education, health or politics. Blockchain – this very technical and still unfamiliar word – covers different realities and a large array of usages, technologies and players.

Participants

Alex Pazaitis (P2P Foundation, P2P Lab), Michel Bauwens by Skype (BE/TH, theorist, founder of the P2P Foundation, Ars Electronica Golden Nica 2016), Yves Moreau (BE, KU Leuven), Jean-Jacques Quisquater (UCL Crypto Group), Chris Speed (UK, University of Edinburgh), Jelle Gerbrandy (IT, Backfeed), Nicolas Loubet (FR, Cellabz), Enric Duran (ES, anarchist, activist, FairCoop), Thomas König (AT, developer, Faircoin), Jaromil, (IT/NL, activist, artist-developer, D-CENT), David Guez (FR, artist), LarbitsSisters (BE, media artists, LARbitsLAB), Max Dovey (UK, artist), Rieul Techer (FR, co-founder Paillasse Saône, project DAISEE), Xavier Lavayssière (FR, entrepreneur, lawyer, developer, Les Bricodeurs), Isabelle Humbert-Radtke (FR, sculptor & engineer, Les Usines Louise)

An event produced by iMAL, in collaboration with LarbitsLab, based on a proposal by LARbitsLAB. With the support of Saison des Cultures Numériques 2016 and Rachid Madrane (Minister for the Promotion of Brussels, Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles).

Guifi.net by Ramon Roca - Forget Comcast. Here’s The DIY Approach to Internet Access | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Spanish engineer Ramon Roca got tired of waiting for telecom companies to wire his town — so he did it himself.

You can see the snow-capped Pyrenees mountains from Gurb, about 75 kilometers north of Barcelona. It’s a quiet farming community of 2,500, and in most ways there’s nothing special to set it apart from many such towns across the Catalonia region of Spain.

So why do people like me eagerly journey to Gurb? Because it’s the birthplace of Guifi.net, one of the world’s most important experiments in télécommunications...

Hackistan experimenting > new models > smart & impactful solutions for the future we want - #hacktivism | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

The aim of Hackistan (http://Hackistan.be) is to gather people who want to save the world, and let them collaborate efficiently towards emancipation around projects with societal and environmental impact.

In a trust-based framework, our goal is offer individuals and projects the best human, digital, financial and infrastructure existing resources - which are btw often underused-, within what we call a vertuous environment (mutualistic, redistributive).

This framework should allow these people and projects to connect more efficiently with resourceful partners (public/private actors, impact investors, Foundations, infrastructure managers).

Technically, we bootstrap this in Brussels by offering a working space, organizing open topic-wise events and private retreats for the collective members, as well as listening as much to the needs/obstacles/fears/ambitions from the people in the existing ecosystem. We aim at lifting up all fictive barriers (linguistic, disciplinary, scientific, industrial, individual) that brakes down the emergence pace of useful solutions.

Enspiral, Sensorica and many other initiatives are highly inspiring to us, we try to build something which relates directly to the specificities of the Belgian environment (a nd local opportunities aswell).

Packetbridge (2012-2015) - wireless geographical network intervention by Gordan Savičić & Bengt Sjölén - Critical Engineer

Packetbridge (Packetbrücke) is a wireless geographical network intervention. It explores simulating entire network situations by transferring electromagnetic infrastructure to a different physical space. Wireless network packets are directly captured from a specific location and tunneled through the Internet to a remote location, where they are released back into the air. In doing so, Packetbridge literally injects one geographical space into another, effectively producing a new imaginary topography and, through this remediation, an “impossible reality”.

Packetbridge demonstrates that positioning systems based on WLAN are a site for intervention, expressing at the same moment they are vulnerable to location spoofing attacks. This effect is especially interesting, considering that we increasingly rely on an ever-growing number of wireless devices for localization, navigation and time-synchronization.

In his review of the Whitechapel Gallery’s Information Superhighway (2016 – 1966) exhibition, Matthew Fuller immerses himself fully in the minds of its curators

Information Superhighway is an amazing feat of curation. It starts with a slice of the present and drills inexorably back through time from post-internet, to net art, to video art, to computer art, to kinetic art and happenings. This show maximises its conceptual lifting power by illustrating how communications networks all point one way – to our illustrious present. As the show moves back through time with each of these phases, the inverse pyramid of art shown becomes smaller and the rooms get emptier as less work stands in for more art. ...

School of Machines, Making & Make Believe is a uniquely curated School born in Berlin, Germany in 2014, keen on inventing one-of-a-kind hands-on learning experiences in the areas of art, technology, design, and human connection. We embrace art, creativity and exploring the latest technology and ourselves with humility and curiosity.

In bringing together an ever-changing constellation of talented instructors, themselves distinguished artists, designers, makers and other professionals from around the globe, and providing a space where imaginations can run wild, our students come to us ready to expose their creative innards to the world in their own unique ways as they learn to work with new tools and people who can help make it happen.

We teach tangible skills like how to code, work with electronics and use digital fabrication tools while exploring concepts, narrative and play. Our goal is to help people take the fantastical ideas inside their heads out into the physical realm to further their artistic practice or to help wrestle out the confidence to begin one. We teach technology to artists and design, creativity, and art to the technology community.

#Hack the Brain 2016 /// Hackathon: 24-26 June in Amsterdam // #EEG #hackthebrain | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

"Hacking the brain is both challenging as well as doable, both philosophical as well as practical, both artistic as well as business, both scientific as well as futuristic.”

This is the century to unravel the working mechanisms of our mysterious brains. Brain cells and structures as well as live neuronal activity and –connections can be visualised with techniques such as EEG, fMRI, and PET. While neuronal activity can be influenced by techniques like transcranial- and deep brain stimulation.

There is an increasing market for consumer brain-imaging devices. Open the papers or the tv-guide, browse through forums and podcasts: everybody is talking about the brain – how it works, how it develops, how we use it and how we can use it better. With our hackathons we invite anyone – from the most experienced bio-hacker to the curious neuroscientist and the hardcore programmer to the eccentric artist – to tackle their own brainy ideas.

Lanky and standing at 5″3′, he passes off as a regular among thousands of college students in the country’s largest engineering educational institution. He slacks, procrastinates and crams for his academics. Kyuubei, his preferred alias, admittedly never topped the class: His real talents lie somewhere he deems more practical and useful outside the four corners of a classroom.

He started young. In fifth grade, autorun viruses that were captured in storage devices were spreading like wildfire. Kyuubei decided to venture out and look deep into the Internet for communities centered on hacking and specialized in dealing with malicious software (malware).

There, he stumbled upon a fellow enthusiast “Tear[A]Door” whom Kyuubei credits to having spawned the vbscript-worm generator that allows users of the program to construct viruses of their own. He also met “alcopaul,” who has mastered and is one of the creators of the Joint Photographic Experts Group infector malware. Their conversations became regular correspondences. Kyuubei was hooked. ...

Brilliant new exploratory devices are overwhelming the field with an avalanche of raw data about the nervous system's inner workings. The trouble is that even starting to make sense of this bonanza of information has become a superhuman challenge.

Just about every branch of science is facing a similar disruption. As laboratory-bench research migrates into the digital realm, programming is becoming an indispensable part of the process. At the same time, previously dependable sources of financial support are drying up...
