Ars Electronica 2017 - Artificial intelligence /// September 7-11, 2017, Linz /// #mediaart #artsci | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Artificial intelligence has done it again. Now that Facebook, Uber and Co. are suffering from an increasingly bad public image, the reinvention of Virtual Reality has already lost its allure, and the Internet of Things doesn’t seem to be able to get beyond the self-replenishing refrigerator, the thrill engendered by futuristic super-machines is dominating the headlines.

So what are we to make of artificial intelligence? Gigantic job eliminator? Or the next step in evolution, the one in which technology finally asserts its mastery over us? Or maybe the source of redemptive systems that develop new medications for us and operate on us, that invest and multiply our capital, and that even make better business executives because the boss is finally a more rational decision-maker? Artificial intelligence has many faces and they’re sure to pay attention to us all.

TADAEX - Tehran Annual Digital Art Exhibition /// #mediaart #festival | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Tehran Annual Digital Art Exhibition, TADAEX, was founded in 2011 with the aim of opening new horizons for Iran’s interdisciplinary and digital art. Its intention has been to create a serious and independent atmosphere for enthusiasts and researchers alike. The non-commercial nature of this art, in addition to the high cost of the equipment, have always made it difficult for the Iranian artists to participate and gain experience in the digital arena.

Thus, the potential for exhibiting and presenting artworks in this field could not be properly realized, and therefore, by presenting works by international artists and creating a platform for engaging with and exchanging of their knowledge, TADAEX has endeavored to pave the way for Iranian digital artists to develop and nurture their art.

The elusive transition of digital culture is shaping a future ‘beyond digital’, where the physical and the digital are merging. In the late 90’s N. Negroponte stated that “the digital revolution is over”. Almost two decades later and having accepted that the digital culture has been stabilized into our everydayness, we are moving forward to a most abstract creation. The necessity of innovation and excess of limits, has been a primary goal imposed by the ever evolving technological fetish.

This futuristic lifestyle is reflected from the coherence of the ‘real – virtual’ boundaries. The humanization of technology along with the social and economic crisis lead to a replica of the physical world where everything is countable in digits, therefore simplified and transparent. Yet is post digital the real progress?

We call all artists that are fond of cutting-edge technologies to continue submiting their works in the following categories: #Installations, #WebArt, #VideoArt, #Animation, #DigitalImage, #AVPerformances, #Music, #Workshops, #Ομιλίες taking advantage of technolgies such as #VirtualReality, #360ovideo, #AugmentedReality, #3DPrinting, #ETextile, #Mappingprojection

This year's theme is “Technology is now” We don’t wish for a different kind of technology. We want a different perception of technology. This reduction bores us as much as centuries lasting techno-optimism. Technology itself has much greater potential...

#Call: Digital Art Co-Commission with British Science Festival - Brighton Digital Festival - deadline 24.04.2017 | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

The British Science Festival and Brighton Digital Festival are looking to co-commission a new digital artwork that will be presented in a gallery space at the University of Brighton, Edward St Campus throughout the British Science Festival and Brighton Digital Festival (5 September to 13 October 2017).

We are particularly interested in works that explore and respond to themes of place: the shifting horizons of physical and virtual environments; the possibilities of technology to reimagine, reinvent and reinterpret space and place, and new opportunities to facilitate collaboration and connect people, place and things.

We are looking for an original artwork or a significant development of an earlier piece. Proposals can involve online work but a thought-out exhibition proposal must be included. Proposals should be aimed at a public audience and a focus on public engagement and participation will be viewed favourably.

Organized by Victoria Bradbury and the New Media 420 Advanced Interactive Design students

Hackathons first emerged in the commercial tech sector where people meet to engage in collaborative computer programming. Art Hacks branch off of this phenomenon while also stemming from art historical precedents of collaborative making practices in the New Media field. At this event, groups will combine computer code with traditional art materials to co-create projects. Hack It! DIY Dystopia will engage participants to combine code, microcontrollers and cardboard to envision, prototype and develop survival-oriented materials.

This event will involve two UNC Asheville classes. It is led by NM 420: Advanced Interactive Design with students from ARTS 178: Powerful Stories Freshman Colloquium as participants. Collaborative teams will work together for five hours to create a final techno-sculptural project considering the themes of survival and technology. (Anyone is welcome to come and observe the process while also participating in short-term hands-on activities on-site).

Artefact 2017: are technology and magical thinking really incompatible? by Regine Debatty (we make money not art) | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Final chapter of the report from the Artefact festival at STUK in Leuven (this way for the previous posts, ladies and gentlemen —> Dataghost 2. The kabbalistic computational machine and Artefact festival: Magic and politics.)

This year, the event looked at magic, its meaning, reach and role in contemporary culture and society. The topic was analyzed through various lenses: entertainment, politics, finance, technology, etc.

The relationship between technology and magic is a particularly puzzling and interesting one. You’d think that progress in science and technology would automatically mark the demise of our interest for magical thinking and occult forms of knowledge. Far from it. It seems that humans have an inherent need to leave some space in their world for the unaccountable and the supernatural. That’s why progresses in science and technology have often been accompanied by the arrival or renewal of paranormal phenomena. The advent of photography, for example, saw a rise in the popularity of spiritism and photography was even used as a proofthat ghosts and other spiritual entities did indeed exist.
