A Cyberfeminist Manifesto for the 21st Century was a project in multiple media that gave vivid expression to the emerging political position of cyberfeminism, which saw new technology as an opportunity to disrupt society’s patriarchal norms, and to have fun doing it. The manifesto was authored in a mode that spoke to the conditions of early network culture: collaborative, plagiaristic, possibly drug-fueled, and pornographic. The resulting text was distributed by fax, snail mail, paste-up poster, billboard, and online post, adopting the techniques of propaganda as an art practice. The Ars Electronica festival celebrates art, technology and society but consistently awards its top prizes to men – does the Art and Technology field have a gender problem? Today is the last day of the annual Ars Electronica festival, held in Linz Austria. Over the past 37 years it has aimed to provide an environment of “experimentation, evaluation and reinvention” in the area broadly defined as art, technology and society. Its top award, the Golden Nica, honours forward-thinking work with broad cultural impact, in an effort to “spotlight the ideas of tomorrow.” However, the prize, hailed by many in the field as the top honour for artists working with science and technology, has a gender problem. This was uncovered by artist Heather Dewey-Hagborg after she received an honourable mention in the Hybrid Arts Category last year. A major new touring exhibition of digital artworks by leading pioneering and contemporary female digital artists will launch at Phoenix Brighton this September. This new curatorial project explores methods of working with new technologies and the themes that bring these artists together From drone choreography, sequencing of bacteria and brainwave art to hacking reality, social media activism and telepresence, this exhibition highlights the contribution of female artists in shaping what digital art is today. The exhibition title references the challenges faced by female artists in this field where they are often under-represented. The exhibition features existing and newly commissioned artworks by Ghislaine Boddington, Susan Collins, Laura Dekker, Anna Dumitriu, Bhavani Esapathi, Julie Freeman, Kate Genevieve, Sue Gollifer, Luciana Haill, Nina Kov, and Gordana Novakovic. The exhibition is curated by Gordana Novakovic, Anna Dumitriu and Irini Papadimitriou, is funded by Arts Council England, The Computer Arts Society, and UCL Department of Computer Science and supported by Women Shift Digital, Phoenix Brighton and Watermans.A full events programme accompanies the exhibition including a series of workshops and a gallery tour. Following the exhibition in Brighton this significant exhibition will tour to Watermans Gallery in London and will be accompanied by a major symposium.
Où sont les femmes dans le numérique ? La question revient régulièrement dans certaines discussions-débats récents ouverts à des manifestations « tech » comme à Web2day ou récemment à Viva Technology dont les organisateurs avouaient rencontrer des difficultés à mobiliser des femmes. La Journée de la Femme Digitale souhaite quant à elle encourager plus de mixité dans des secteurs encore trop peu paritaires. En effet, dans le numérique le chemin à parcourir est encore long : la part des femmes dans les métiers du numérique n’est que de 28% en France (voir l’article [Débat] Les femmes prennent-elles enfin leur revanche dans le numérique?). Qu’en est-il dans l’art numérique ? Compositrices, artistes sonore, chorégraphes, plasticiennes, chercheuses, enseignantes en robotique en encore commissaires d’exposition ou directrices de festival, la gent féminine, bien qu'encore minoritaire, n'en est pas moins investie et se fait peu à peu sa place dans les festivals et expositions. Faute de pouvoir donner des statistiques précises, Digitalarti Media revient sur la création numérique en 8 artistes féminines s'appropriant les nouveaux enjeux des domaines de l'art & des technologies.
Chorégraphe, artiste et chercheuse. La standardisation du vivant dans le monde actuel est la principale problématique abordée dans son travail. Depuis des années elle travaille régulièrement avec des réseaux engagés dans la culture libriste en France et en Amérique latine.
Elle est artiste résidente au LADyHx (Laboratoire de mécanique des fluides) de l’École Polytechnique de Paris-Saclay, en association avec le physicien Jean-Marc Chomaz, pour la création d’un triptyque chorégraphique autour de la crise écologique actuelle. Elle fait partie de l’Unité de recherche Numérique/TacticLab de l’ENSBA de Lyon, consacrée à l’étude théorique et pratique des enjeux éthiques et esthétiques des cultures numériques et doctorante en sciences et arts à l’École Polytechnique de Paris-Saclay.

The festival takes place biannually in Montreal, and its aim is to showcase cutting-edge projects produced by local and international artists. Each edition focuses on a specific theme and addresses urgent socio-political questions by pushing the boundaries of artistic and feminist practices.
The 12th edition of the festival will coincide with the 20th anniversary of Studio XX! To celebrate such a collective accomplishment, we launch our open call for proposals to local and international artists so that, together, we can continue to enact creative and critical feminist interventions in media arts and digital culture. THEME : TERMS OF PRIVACY Current discussions around privacy are shaped by the role new technologies play in enabling modern forms of individual, corporate, and state surveillance. In 2013, Edward Snowden revealed that the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) operates numerous global surveillance programs targeting governments, corporations, and civilians in the United States and abroad, and thus what everyone suspected became official: that we—tech consumers—are watched, listened to, traced, and monitored in real time via our gadgets and personal computers. As we speak or type, programs of mass surveillance gather our personal data and mega-data. Further, Snowden's leaked classified information revealed that the problem goes beyond the NSA, linking Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United States and the United Kingdom in an intelligence alliance known as the “five-eyes”...
Les résidences du Studio XX offrent aux artistes la possibilité d’expérimenter et de créer de nouvelles œuvres. Nous répondons à leurs besoins techniques, créatifs et théoriques en les référant à notre réseau communautaire d’expert-e-s (la décision de s’y impliquer revient à l’artiste). Les artistes en résidence ont accès à un espace de travail, à un ordinateur réservé et aux équipements du Studio XX pendant six semaines. Ils-Elles profitent d'un soutien technique ainsi que d'un cachet d’artiste.
Leur travail est présenté dans le cadre de nos activités de diffusion. Trois résidences ouvertes sont offertes annuellement (incluant la possibilité de résidences virtuelles).
L’expression « écriveuses du Web » désigne ces femmes qui s’approprient avec courage et audace les espaces en ligne pour faire du Web leur territoire. Nous avons identifié deux notions permettant de problématiser leur pratique : l’abondance et le remix. Écrire sur le Web, c’est participer à l’abondance numérique, c’est-à-dire s’inscrire dans l’afflux de productions en ligne. Pour cela, les écriveuses trouvent des stratégies pour se connecter aux autres. Elles écrivent également pour garder le flux de leur créativité actif afin que leurs idées soient abondantes. Elles utilisent les écritures médiatiques qui, parfois, engendrent des remix. Ces derniers sont générés à partir d’une ou plusieurs autres productions culturelles et peuvent aussi s’appliquer à l’identité des écriveuses, qu’elles remixent afin d’explorer des formes d’écriture singulières.
In mid-December, 12 hackers, artists, coders, and activists gathered to tackle issues of privacy, surveillance, anonymity, and big data as they manifest in our society. Over the course of one week, 10 presentations unfolded, a short documentary film was shot, and in a frenzy of production, an entire book was made. Deep Lab is a impermanent collective of cyberfeminist researchers, organized by STUDIO Fellow Addie Wagenknecht to examine how privacy, security, surveillance, anonymity, and large-scale data aggregation are problematized in the arts and society. The Deep Lab participants, all women, are an international group of new-media artists, information designers, data scientists, software engineers, hackers, writers, journalists and theoreticians, who are engaged in ongoing critical assessments of contemporary digital culture. During the second week of December 2014, these experts will work collaboratively at the STUDIO in an accelerated pressure project, which blends aspects of a booksprint, hackathon, dugnad, charrette, and a micro-conference.
The Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry is a flexible laboratory for new modes of arts research, production and presentation. Founded in 1989 within the College of Fine Arts at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), the STUDIO serves as a locus for hybrid enterprises on the CMU campus, the Pittsburgh region, and internationally. Our current emphasis on new-media arts builds on more than two decades of experience hosting interdisciplinary artists in an environment enriched by world-class science and engineering departments. Through our residencies and outreach programs, the STUDIO provides opportunities for learning, dialogue and research that lead to innovative breakthroughs, new policies, and the redefinition of the role of artists in a quickly changing world.

ENS, Salle Dussane, de 14 à 17h L’imaginaire de l’homme-machine, remis au goût du jour par l’idéologie transhumaniste, dissimule sous la neutralité du genre l’autre moitié de la question : la femme-machine. Celle-ci n’a que rarement été abordée comme telle, c’est-à-dire comme expression spécifique d’une fantasmatique masculine impliquant désir de contrôle sur la procréation et sur la généalogie humaine. Le thème a pourtant engendré de nombreuses représentations, œuvres et images, tant dans l’art que dans l’illustration populaire et le cinéma, que cette séance se propose d’aborder.
Dans le cadre de Postdigital est un programme exploratoire de recherche et de réflexion sur la généralisation des technologies numériques et son lien avec nos imaginaires. Il s’est formé au coeur du Département d’Histoire et Théorie des arts (DHTA) de l’Ecole normale supérieure, sous la coordination de Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel, Maître de conférences à l’ENS en histoire de l’art contemporain, et Alexandre Cadain, jeune chercheur et entrepreneur, ancien du DHTA de l’ENS. Organisé en partenariat avec le Pôle numérique des Beaux-Arts, le programme explore les nouvelles directions de notre conception du temps et la résurgence de la fiction à l’ère digitale. Il est est financé par l’ENS (DHTA), par le LAbex TransferS, et par Paris Sciences Lettres Research University (www.univ-psl.fr).

Our interests are diverse, and we do not agree on everything. Some of our research includes privacy, surveillance, code, art, social hacking, race, capitalism, anonymity, the infrastructures of the 21st century and useful skills in tangible situations. Members of Deep Lab are engaged in ongoing critical assessments of contemporary digital culture, and work together to exploit the potential for creative inquiry lying dormant in the deep web. Our research is conducted independently as well as collaboratively. The process is manifested by our network and both seperate and shared knowledge/expertise between members. The McGill Institute for Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies (IGSF) is pleased to invite presentation proposals for a two-day conference entitled “Terms of Privacy: Intimacies, Exposures and Exceptions”, Nov. 4-5, 2016. The conference is held in collaboration with Studio XX’s biennial feminist festival of media arts + digital culture, The HTMlles 12: Terms of Privacy, Nov. 3-6, 2016. L’Institut Genre, Sexualité et Féminisme (I.G.S.F.) de McGill vous invite à soumettre une proposition de présentation pour une conférence de deux jours intitulée «Conditions de confidentialité : Intimités, expositions et exceptions» - qui se tiendra les 4 et 5 novembre 2016. La conférence est organisée en collaboration avec la 12e édition du festival féministe d’arts médiatiques + culture numérique, Les HTMlles, qui se tiendra du 3 au 6 novembre 2016, avec pour thématique “Conditions de confidentialité”. Les participant-e-s peuvent présenter des propositions à la fois pour des discussions académiques et des présentations de conférences non traditionnelles. Les soumissions seront acceptées en français ou en anglais (mais veuillez noter que la conférence offrira seulement une traduction passive pour celles et ceux qui en ont besoin). Gaby Cepeda, an independent curator based in Lima, Peru, founded the Girls of the Internet Museum as a way to archive Internet works made by an international group of women. Controlled and personified, social media has become a haven for feminist exploration; artists are now carefully constructing the ways in which their bodies are presented and consumed. There are worlds within Wikipedia, but in a larger sense, Wikipedia is also a reflection of the world. Power structures and inequalities included. “Women, people of color, and members of marginalized communities have not historically always been represented in public discourse,” says Katherine Maher, Chief Communications Officer of Wikimedia, the foundation that runs Wikipedia. “Whether in the media, or in research, or in non-fiction work, because their voices have not always been heard or told.” Because Wikipedia works by citations of secondary sources, these voices also do not end up reflected thoroughly on Wikipedia – which essentially mirrors the information that is easily available in the world.

“There is something about the internet that isn’t working anymore,” is the line that opens filmmaker Jonathan Minard’s short documentary on Deep Lab—a group of women hackers, artists, and theorists who gathered at Carnegie Mellon University in December to answer the question of what, exactly, that disquieting “something” is. The film premieres on Motherboard today.
What Deep Lab represents is just as hard to pin down as the “something” invoked in the opening minutes of Minard’s short film. Is it a book, a lecture series, or Minard’s documentary—all of which were put together in under a month? Is it an ethos? Is it feminist? Is Deep Lab a charrette, a dugnad, or a “congress,” as its participants called it?
Life is hacking. And hacking is the art of constantly learning about the artifacts that surround us throughout our lives. For instance, a child practices hacking all day long by touching, exploring, tasting, smelling, breaking things. A child approaches every leaf, piece of wood or spinning-top with a sense of curiosity and concentration. This is the art of practicing Life through hacking as a value and a principle of learning and doing.
