Talk to Me | Prayer Companion (2010) - MoMA

Talk to Me | Prayer Companion (2010) - MoMA | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Developed for the nine Poor Clare Sisters who live at a monastery in York, UK, the Prayer Companion is a communication device with a very explicit purpose: it alerts the nuns to issues that need their prayers. The nuns, whose everyday lives have changed little since medieval times, have taken vows of enclosure, and their only connection to the outside world is through occasional access to Catholic newspapers, mail, and limited use of the telephone and computer. Designed to be understated and unobtrusive, the Prayer Companion subtly scrolls a ticker tape of issues across its top; its small screen can only be viewed from above and close-up, thus minimizing its distracting potential. The device was designed specifically for the nuns and is the only one of its kind. “Goldie,” as the nuns call it, sits on a table in a hallway that they often pass through, scrolling news as well as the feelings of anonymous strangers whose blog entries are aggregated by the website We Feel Fine. The nuns have told Bill Gaver, of the Interaction Research Studio, that “it has been valuable in keeping [our] prayers pertinent.”

How to Flawlessly Predict Anything on the Internet ?

How to Flawlessly Predict Anything on the Internet ? | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Spark conspiracies, incite riots, and predict the future with a confidence scam for the Twitter era.

On Saturday, a Twitter accountappeared that perfectly predicted the outcome of the final World Cup game, down to who scored the winning goal for Germany. It was a con—and a classic one. (We’ll talk about how the con works in a moment.)

But it also felt like a missed opportunity, and immediately made me think of a much more serious con perfect for the 2016 election...

▶ A Computer Glossary (1968) by Charles & Ray Eames

A Computer Glossary was shown in 1968 in the IBM Corporations pavilion at Hemisfair, the Worlds Fair in San Antonio, Texas.

The film, another in the series of Eames Office projects promoting understanding of the electronic computer, begins with a live-action, close-up sequence depicting the path that data travels in the computer, accompanied by a sound track of professional jargon being spoken by the computer-room staff. The film goes on to introduce various terms specific to electronic data processing, thereby creating a computer glossary. Animated sequences define and illustrate the glossary (according to definitions that were valid in the mid-1960’s)

The graphic presentation of terms and definitions is accompanied by short, animated dramatizations of computer operations and applications. See accompanying graphic design work for this film here.

A Computer Glossary was written by Glen Fleck and Charles with the assistance of Lynn Stoller of IBM.

It won a bronze medal at the Atlanta International Film Festival in 1969.

Crow Sourcing - A beastiary of idioms: using diverse media to probe relations of nature, language, and knowing

Crow Sourcing - A beastiary of idioms: using diverse media to probe relations of nature, language, and knowing | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

What do we know about animals and how do we know it?

Crow Sourcing examines how we know animals as much through idioms as through direct experience.

There are thousands of idioms and expressions that color how we think of animals and other creatures, like "high horse," "lame duck," and "monkey business." Like "bee-line" and "get your goat." Crow Sourcing focuses on the ones that are not very intuitive. For example "as the crow flies." It isn't easy to reason out what it means and its origins. How does the crow fly? We may assume that it flies directly because of usage. It's possible that in centuries past sailors at sea released crows to figure out the best path towards land, but the origin of the idiom is disputed. Now that computer graphics technology has advanced to the point where photo-realistic animals can talk, dance, and play a drum kit, our reliance on entertainment media to learn about animal behavior is more problematic than ever. While virtuality and urbanization have gained influence over human perception, spoken languages retain vestiges of our ancestors' closeness to the natural world. Crow Sourcing engages collective memory and understanding to demystify and reanimate a dizzying array of animal sayings and expressions. It aims to provoke discussion and reflection about our creature cousins at a time of unprecedented habitat destruction and extinction.

#Graffiti Fur: Turning Your Carpet Into a Computer Display :)

This new display technology, Graffiti Fur, utilizes the fact that the shading properties of fur change as the fibers are raised or flattened. Users can erase drawings by sweeping the surface with the hand and flattening the fibers, and then draw lines by moving fingers in the opposite direction and raising the fibers. These material properties can be found in various items such as carpets in our living environments.

The Graffiti Fur demonstration allows users to draw patterns on two different "fur displays" using a roller device and a pen device. The technology converts ordinary objects into rewritable displays without requiring or creating any non-reversible modifications. In addition, it can be used to present large-scale images without glare, and the images it creates require no operating costs.

JavaZone has been described as a high-quality, independent conference, and is a forum for knowledge exchange, recruitment and branding. Some 40 large and mid-sized businesses - our partners - exhibit their products and services in a separate exhibition space, while more than 90 presentations are given in the conference facilities. Each year, around 2,300 conference tickets are sold. This means that, over the two days the conference lasts, we deliver more than 200,000 hours of expertise. When you add to this the many informal discussions that take place at stands and between attendees, JavaZone stands out as a tremendous arena for knowledge transfer. Of course, a conference involving so many developers is also a key arena for recruitment. Through their exhibitions and other activities, the large and mid-sized companies use the opportunity to promote their business and recruit new staff. ...

De l'ivresse en spray, by Starck

De l'ivresse en spray, by Starck | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Notre cerveau a besoin d’évasion. Ph.S.

Birds Dessinés par Nicolas Demange, aka Alconis | Archive | Actualité | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it
