Tyzack Trowel and Square - 1/2 inch

Tyzack Trowel and Square - 1/2 inch | Archaeology Tools | Scoop.it

Tyzack Trowel and Square - 1/2 inch...

The blade is solid forged, hardened, tempered and ground to give the necessary balance between flexibility and strength. This tool is double ended giving a combination of a small trowel and square. It is particularly useful for delicate work when care and precision need to be taken.

Don't be fooled by cheap alternatives, which feel light and feeble and just don't match up to the job.  ---   which is a tough one.    The next tool after the trowel in terms of delicacy

Remember this is originally for use as a Plasterers tool, and we use it it outside, in all types of soil conditions.   Keep it clean and dry off after use.   Often used during more delicate excavation, you may have to be careful if excavating softer materials like bone or wood.   in which case...   you would be better with wooden tools.

Used by generations of archaeologists across the world.

Stanley 8m Hand Tape

Stanley 8m Hand Tape | Archaeology Tools | Scoop.it

Stanley 8m Hand Tape...

Nothing quite like the 8m tape. and as it is a Stanley it has a great blade which does not bend and can even be extended vertically to over 3.5 m without support! ( well that as the best I got! )

And here is the best bit. I was on a sand site and it rained a lot! Even this hand tape jammed with the punishment it received. Everyone else had dead hand tapes. not me... I unscrewed it, cleaned it, re-assembled. and hey... back in action. I would rather buy this than cheaper tapes that will need replaced with every kink in the blade, with every jam, with every spring return failure!

Top!

This 8m tape is a real breakthrough, roughly the same size as the old 5m, so it fits comfortably in the hand now, with a rubberised ridged grip on the base, which fits the fingers and gives a good grip, the lock has been redesigned too, with a more robust feel and shape. It was worth it before... now its essential!

The iPad is an ideal tool for field archaeology.

This blog sets out to bring together experiences of archaeologists using iPads.

Inaccuracies and misplaced towns and cities in Apple's new map software have provoked anger from users.

In June Apple announced it would stop using Google Maps in favour of its own system, created using data from navigation specialist TomTom.

STAEDTLER 6H Mars Lumograph Pencil for archaeology

STAEDTLER 6H Mars Lumograph Pencil for archaeology | Archaeology Tools | Scoop.it

6H Lumograph pencils are designed for drawing on paper and matte drafting film.

Lines reproduce well and the bonded lead is break-resistant.

Pencil markings are easy to erase, but hold well to drafting film in all weathers (treated with care of course!) and pencils are easy to sharpen.

Each pencil has a distinctive blue hexagon barrel and no eraser.

These are the pencils I used from when first starting as an archaeologist back in the 80s... and its true... a good thing is hard to beat, so why change it.

University of Kentucky professors' surprise discovery: prehistoric settlement in Italy | Education | Kentucky.com

University of Kentucky professors' surprise discovery: prehistoric settlement in Italy | Education | Kentucky.com | Archaeology Tools | Scoop.it

University of Kentucky professors Paolo Visona and George Crothers have spent their professional lives studying ancient civilizations — Visona, mostly Greek archaeology; and Crothers, mostly early Native American populations in Kentucky's Green River valley.

This summer, their research was in neither of those areas, yet it turned out to be one of the most unexpected and exciting professional moments in either man's career — a culmination of expertise, planning and lots of luck. Visona now calls it a "perfect combination of circumstances."

Snuffler - Freeware Geophysics Software

Snuffler - Freeware Geophysics Software | Archaeology Tools | Scoop.it

Snuffler is Freeware Geophysics software for processing Resistivity and Magnetometry Data...

There are many skills that a person can contribute to the archaeological community. Some people can organise digs, some have the artistic skills for illustrating sections or finds, some have a large expanse of free brain space to fit in a knowledge of pottery, some even can swing a mattock for extended periods of time without the need for medical attention. None of this applies to me. So how, I pondered, can I best serve the archaeological community and become an 'expert'. The answer was to take my day job as a computer programmer and do something constructive with it.

Geophysics is a very important field in archaeology, especially now with the emphasis on non-destructive methods of recording archaeology favoured when sites are not under direct threat from development. The problem is the whole business is still expensive, with the cost of equipment running into thousands of pounds.

After coming across a cheap resistivity meter provided by the 'Council for Independant Archaeology' and 'TR Systems Ltd' I decided to try writing some windows software to go with it. The software is not restricted to this particular meter however and can be used for any set of resistivity or magnetometry data in electronic or paper format, and most importantly it is FREE.

Chartwell Watershed Waterproof Book

Chartwell Watershed Waterproof notebook used in wet conditions by archaeologists...

I have used this waterproof notebook in all weathers, and even when used underwater, it is as good as if you are in a dry environment. Use a pencil and you can write on it again and again! the 'paper' is indestructible. This is not a notebook - this is THE notebook!

Pete Searle's comment September 29, 2012 3:05 AM
Hey David, do you have any influence on the Past Horizons site? I was wondering - it would be really handy if the quantity supplied could be added to the pencils on sale. Just an idea, and keep up the good works!
