Students show their smarts with cardboard creations | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

When it comes to cardboard, the possibilities are endless. At least that’s what elementary and middle school students were trying to prove on Saturday. The children were cutting, taping and building with the paper recyclable in the cafeteria of Wyoming Seminary Lower School as they took part in the Global Cardboard Challenge Saturday.

School Programs | The Science House Foundation - Funding Science and Math Education | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

Science House Foundation works in partnership with scientists and teachers to offer classroom science programs to schools around the world. Each program provides educational tools – such as microscopes, books or robotics kits – and engages students through challenges and lessons from renowned scientists. All participants play an active role in the program, contributing their findings, helping each other to solve problems, and even coming up with their own activities.

Our current projects explore microbiology, robotics and the environment. Applications for all programs are open year round. We are always looking for teachers with enthusiasm and imagination to get involved!

Flipping The Flipped Classroom - Motion Infographics For STEM Learning

Flipping The Flipped Classroom - Motion Infographics For STEM Learning | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

"At its simplest, a flipped format can involve a teacher inviting students to view YouTube videos at home as a preview to the day's topic. At its most rigorous, a flipped curriculum involves teachers writing, producing, directing, editing, and posting their own original lessons -- complete with custom narrations and visualizations -- via third-party applications."

Why should the video watching previous to in-class? The core is quality video access and intensive in-class interaction. The lecture can't complete with these superb ones.

Let’s Give Girls a Chance to Succeed in STEM

Let’s Give Girls a Chance to Succeed in STEM | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
With college-educated women outnumbering college-educated men, why does such inequality plague STEM-based professions? From what I hear in my work as an education technology entrepreneur, an antiquated cultural myth still exists that girls are inherently uncomfortable with computing, math and science.

5 Steps to Literacy Rich STEM Activities

5 Steps to Literacy Rich STEM Activities | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
When we help kids make connections, we strengthen their learning experience. Integrating multiple subjects when studying a topic or theme is one way to help build these connections. STEM (which stands for science, technology, engineering, and math) activities provide a fabulous vehicle for integrated learning.

However, I like to add another crucial element to the mix.The subject that binds all the others together is LITERACY. The communication of ideas to and from the child is where the real learning and processing comes into play.

STEM students fare better when professors don't just lecture, study finds @insidehighered

STEM students fare better when professors don't just lecture, study finds @insidehighered | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

Scott Freeman and the other scholars behind a new study comparing the efficacy of lectures with more "active" forms of instruction in the science classroom are not aiming low in describing the significance of their findings.

Just as the U.S. surgeon general's 1964 report on smoking provided strong evidence linking tobacco use to ill health, Freeman said, the study he and his colleagues published Monday "provides overwhelming evidence that active learning works better than lecture." That may not mean that instructors stop lecturing, he said, "but it shouldn't be about the evidence anymore."

The study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences by a team of researchers at the University of Washington and University of Maine, is a meta-analysis of 225 previous studies comparing student outcomes in science, technology, engineering and mathematics courses that use lectures only versus those that incorporate group problem-solving, use of clickers, workshops or other forms of "active learning."

If you are looking for some great resources to help your students learn more about the environment this list of 22 interactive lessons may be right up your alley. The lesson plans are for students as young as Kindergarten up through Grade 12. All are from PBS and all come with materials to use in conjunction with the interactive activities. PBS does require that you create a user name after you access two items but you may also create and save items in a favorite files for future use.

* Body & Brain

* Earth & Science

You can do a search for any topic and then filter the results by type which include:

* Text (article/site)
* Video

* Interactive/Quiz

* Game

* Images

If you have wondered why spatial skills matter this post states "The ability to mentally manipulate shapes and otherwise understand how the three-dimensional world works turns out to be an important predictor of creative and scholarly achievements, according to research published this month in the journal Psychological Science."

Why is this important? It turns out that spatial skills at the age of 13 turn out to predict "the likelihood that the individual would develop new knowledge and produce innovation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, the domains collectively known as STEM."

For more information on this as well as links to additional resources check out this post.
