As my students know, I completely agree. PPTs facilitate quick, short-term acquisition of knowledge (very basic concepts), but do not encourage engagement & critical thought. Without PPTs, students are required to actively listen and discern the important points to write into notes. More importantly, however, the conversation is not constrained by pre-designed slides. Without them, a group of intelligent humans (students & teacher) is more likely to have a dynamic, interesting discussion with a higher level of thinking. Sans slides , however, does require more work for the student to "get" the right answers to the test. It also shifts much more responsibility to the students to make the class successful.
