Adapt authoring tool

Adapt authoring tool | Formation Agile | Scoop.it

The Adapt authoring tool is a server-based web application to allow you and your team to quickly build responsive e-learning content.

Being a server-based tool, it’s accessed by users via a web browser, and lets you easily create beautiful Adapt courses using any combination of existing tried-and-tested Adapt plugins to add interactivity and functionality, and rich multimedia assets and themes to add visual flair.

You can preview your e-learning creations straight from the authoring tool, or quickly and easily package them up for uploading to your SCORM-compliant LMS — all straight out-of-the-box.

Mickael Ruau's insight:

Getting started

Installing the authoring tool is getting easier and easier; however, it still requires you to take steps that are typically hidden within a packaged installer.

The Adapt authoring tool is already being used by instructional designers and L&D departments to create responsive, HTML5, SCORM compatible elearning packages which can be tracked in an LMS.

If you’re not intimidated by techie things, here’s our guide to installing the authoring tool. And that’s when the fun starts!

Fully documented

Once you’re up and running, you’ll want to find out more about the various components and capabilities of the authoring tool. The documentation has help and information for non-technical users and developers.

The Only Primer You’ll Need On eLearning Standards: SCORM, xAPI, And AICC - eLearning Industry

The Only Primer You’ll Need On eLearning Standards: SCORM, xAPI, And AICC - eLearning Industry | Formation Agile | Scoop.it
Wondering how to choose the right eLearning standard? Check the only prime you'll need on eLearning Standards: SCORM, Tin Can API, and AICC.
Mickael Ruau's insight:

xAPI/Tin Can API Allows Learning To Happen Anywhere

Built with the premise that learning happens anywhere, xAPI was developed three years ago and has quickly become the new standard for delivering online training content. xAPI is the next evolution of SCORM: it has all the functionality of SCORM with the added ability to track learning progress offline.

With blended learning strategies growing in popularity, this ability to track any learning activity regardless of environment is a necessary tool in ensuring the quality of learning content and programs. xAPI also keeps up with mobile learning by allowing learning content to be accessed on mobile devices. Learning content is no longer bound to the confines of a web browser, and can be adapted to fit any screen or device.

Office Mix, e-Learning and SCORM – Office Blogs

By using SCORM, you can host your content in your organization’s LMS, for playback through a familiar delivery platform for your audience. Of course, you can also invite them to watch the training directly on OfficeMix.com, and you can even require sign in to protect access to more sensitive training material. You can also embed Office Mix content in thousands of portals and sites using the embed.ly and oEmbed protocols (see this post for more info), share to social media, or in enterprise platforms like OneDrive for Business and Yammer.

Office Mix also supports mobile playback, so your audience can watch e-Learning material on the go using their iOS, Android and Windows Phone device. Office Mix simplifies this process for authors; you can create content once in PowerPoint, and OfficeMix.com will ensure it plays well on both the desktop and mobile platforms.

Mickael Ruau's insight:

Training professionals and educators need the resulting data, so they can measure performance of the audience and gain insights on how to improve the material for future use. The OfficeMix.com portal makes this process as simple as can be, by reporting results by slide and by assessment. If your audience watches your e-Learning mix while logged in to Office 365, you can also see the results by user.

Trivial SCORM Player

For reasons unknown, SCORM RTEs and documentation available online are super complex.

This is not a fully-featured implementation but just a simplest way to run SCORM packages in a browser.

It has been developed for specific purpose and tested on packages generated in Adobe Captivate and most probably wont work with other packages.

See "example.html" for usage.

For a complete implementation go to http://www.vsscorm.net/

XML Schema Definition Files - SCORM -

XML Schema Definition Files - SCORM -  | Formation Agile | Scoop.it

These schema definition files should be included in every SCORM package.

Mickael Ruau's insight:
Download the SCORM Manifest XML Schema Definition Files

To be properly formatted, every SCORM package should include the full set of XML schema definition files that define the format of the SCORM manifest file. The appropriate set of files varies based on the version of the SCORM standard. In SCORM 2004, if your content does not use metadata, then far fewer XSD files are required. The links below allow you to download just the subset of XSD files that you need.

Each download also includes a manifest template that is useful for copying the XML namespace declarations in the header of the manifest tag. (Note: your browser might not render the full set of XML namespace declarations, save the file to your computer and open in a text or XML editor to ensure that you see the complete header.)

Click below to download .XSD and .DTD files appropriate for each version of SCORM.

SCORM Manifest Files

SCORM content packages contain an XML manifest file that describes the package and its contents.
Mickael Ruau's insight:
SCORM Manifest Files

SCORM content packages contain an XML manifest file that describes the package and its contents. The manifest file is a structured inventory of the content of the package. The name of the manifest file is always imsmanifest.xml and it must appear in the root of the content package.

    Mandatory Manifest File contents:
  • Unique identifier
  • Minimal metadata describing the package and its SCORM version
  • One or more resource definitions listing all files required to launch and deliver each resource
  • One or more organizations of learning activities

    Optional Manifest File contents:
  • Sequencing information for organizations
  • More metadata for the content package, resources, and organizations

All references to files in the resources must be relative to the root of the content package. Referencing external files or absolute URLs is not allowed.

SCORM Versions - An eLearning Standards Roadmap - SCORM -

Just like any technology, SCORM has evolved through the years. There are currently four different implementable versions of SCORM. SCORM 2004 has several different editions, and the latest version/next generation of SCORM is the Experience API (xAPI). Furthermore, SCORM isn’t the only e-learning standard out there. Other standards like AICC HACP and IMS Common Cartridge …

Getting Started with SCORM: How does SCORM really work? - eLearning Industry

Getting Started with SCORM: How does SCORM really work? - eLearning Industry | Formation Agile | Scoop.it
Getting Started with SCORM: How does SCORM really work? How does information get from a SCO to the LMS?
Mickael Ruau's insight:

Once a SCO has found the API it can then request or send data to the LMS.  It’s worth noting here that the SCO is always the one initiating the request.  It asks the LMS when it needs information or tells the LMS when it wants to send information. The LMS passively waits for the SCO to make these requests. The API has access to the following 8 basic functions (which are defined in the SCORM spec).  Please note the name of these functions varies slightly from SCORM 1.2 to SCORM 2004).

  1. LMSInitialize
  2. LMSSetValue
  3. LMSGetValue
  4. LMSCommit
  5. LMSFinish
  6. LMSGetErrorString
  7. LMSGetLastError
  8. LMSGetDiagnostic

Most of these have a relatively descriptive name that gives you an idea of their purpose – As always the devil is in the details, so we will be delving into these specific functions in much more depth in future articles.
