A new study released today by UnitedHealth Group (NYSE:UNH) and the Optum Institute finds that volunteering is linked to better physical, mental and emotional health.

Volunteering is important in nourishing healthy communities. People who generously give up their time for a cause they are willing to support will not only strengthen our communities, but also provide self-fulfilment. This article states that volunteering can have health benefits for the volunteer, including positive impacts to a person’s physical, mental and emotional health, as well purpose. I currently volunteer for a not for profit emergency services organisation where I have been volunteering for the past six years and have progressed within this organisation from a community member to a deputy group leader. As volunteering is a choice and a choice of what a person can chose to do for their volunteering, I believe this article is correct in stating that there are positive health benefits for both the community and the individual. For myself, volunteering definitely gives me a sense of purpose and a sense of community. The right match can also help volunteers find friends, learn new skills, and even advance their career. Part of this article was drawing on a study that was conducted by two health organisations researching health benefits for volunteers in America. The findings stated 78% of volunteers reported a decrease in their stress levels through volunteering and 76% felt physically healthier. These findings also showed the benefits of volunteering to furthermore help strengthen the communities as well as having “real” positive health benefits for the volunteer. I chose this article because I value volunteering in our community and within the next five years, I would personally like to be a group leader. The health benefits of volunteering are positive for myself and this article reflects these health benefits. I wish everyone would look into helping strengthen our community through volunteering and the benefits to yourself will show in you newfound health.

We already knew the benefits of volunteering included the boosting of your career options, personal development and learning of new skills all while helping others. NOW, HEALTH BENEFITS HAVE BEEN FOUND TO ARISE FROM VOLUNTEERING TOO!
