These industry-funded studies aren’t science as much as they are public relations, always concluding that GE is safe and good.

If you’ve been paying attention to the news about food lately, you’ve probably read about the now infamous “Seralini study,” http://www.foodandwaterwatch.org/blogs/first-long-term-ge-food-study-results-are-in-and-theyre-not-pretty/ In this study University of Caen (France) molecular biologist Gilles-Eric Seralini demonstrated major health issues associated with eating Monsanto’s genetically engineered (GE) corn and the herbicide used in conjunction with it, RoundUp.

Widely covered by the media, most reports have tried to portray Seralini as a strident, ideologically driven researcher who willfully designed a study to produce a result showing that GE food is bad.

Sacramento, CA — According to filings released by the California Secretary of State this week, the world’s six largest pesticide corporations, or “Big 6”, are now the six largest funders of opposition to Proposition 37. Collectively they have contributed more than $20 million to oppose the measure that would label genetically engineered food, including an intensive advertising campaign over the past two weeks.

Food Expert Michael Pollan Speaks Out on Prop37

The BioTech and food industry is happy to boast about genetically engineered crops in the elite precincts of the op-ed and business pages — as a technology needed to feed the world, combat climate change, solve Africa’s problems, etc. — but still would rather not mention it to the consumers who actually eat the stuff. Presumably that silence owes to the fact that, to date, genetically modified foods don’t offer the eater any benefits whatsoever — only a potential, as yet undetermined risk. So how irrational would it be, really, to avoid them?
