Scientific Data to complement and promote public data repositories : Scientific Data

Scientific Data to complement and promote public data repositories : Scientific Data | A New Society, a new education! | Scoop.it

"Scientific Data to complement and promote public data repositories

Scientific Data will be a forum for publications about datasets, but will not be a repository for primary datasets. Primary data associated with Data Descriptors will be stored in one or more external data repositories. Why this distinction?

This strategy helps us draw some clear lines around the goals of Scientific Data. By ensuring that the primary datasets are stored in external systems, we make it crystal clear that our goal is to help authors publish content that promotes the scientific value and reusability of their datasets, not to control access to data. We feel that this is a progressive strategy that will help promote collaboration and data consolidation, rather than fragmentation"

This is an example of providing access to data & content. It presents a forum for authors to develop collaboration and data sharing rather than fragmenting research or keeping it embargoed. One result of such activities will be more rapid and wider dissemination of research to improve the knowledge base available to the scientific communities.

Latest Study: A full-time school librarian makes a critical difference in boosting student achievement | School Library Journal | A New Society, a new education! | Scoop.it

Simply put, students suffer when they don’t have adequate resources—and, in particular, we’ve found that student achievement suffers when schools lack libraries that are staffed by full-time librarians. “Nearly every public school in Bucks, Delaware, and Montgomery Counties has a library with certified staff, which has been proven to increase student reading and comprehension,” notes Kintisch. “In contrast, most public schools in Philadelphia do not employ a certified librarian, and more than 140 do not have a library.”

Data Curation as Digital Preservation of Documents and Electronic Artifacts: Key Reference Resources

Data Curation as Digital Preservation of Documents and Electronic Artifacts: Key Reference Resources | A New Society, a new education! | Scoop.it

Robin Good: Data (or Digital) Curation, is an academic/scientific discipline dedicated to preserve, organize and collect digital documents and other electronic artifacts for archival, re-use and repurposing objectives.

Check: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_curation and

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_curation

The importance of Data Curation can be easily underestimated as it may appear, to the casual viewer, as an arid, tedious document archival job.

In reality, Digital Curation efforts are of great value to the preservation of important cultural documents and data for future researchers who will want to access, in some organized way, the data-information-artifacts of our time. In addition, the data curation practices and guidelines developed by academic and research institutions can also be of value and inspiration to other types of curation work, that may adopt, emulate or innovate upon them.

If you are interested in learning more about Data/Digital Curation and in identifying the key organizations in this space, here is a good shortlist for you, thanks to the kind work of Kevin "the Librarian" Read:

University of Arizona – Digital Information Management
University of Illinois – Data Curation Education Program
University of North Carolina – DigCCurr University of Virginia – Scientific Data Consulting

Digital Curation Centre Digital Curation Exchange International Journal of Digital Curation Purdue-UIUC Data Curation Profiles Project

Useful. 7/10
