Wearable Tech will help us live longer.

As visions of sugar plums recede to make room for New
Year’s resolutions, some consumers already have a jump
on health and wellness: Almost half (49%) own a wearable
device, according to PwC analysis. Of those, 45% own a
fitness band.

Beyond fitness, overall wellness is important to
consumers. They want wearables to help them:
• live longer
• reduce commute times
• maintain a healthy weight
• pay less in insurance premiums

Wearable Technology and Privacy Concerns - MIT Sloan Executive Education

Wearable Technology and Privacy Concerns - MIT Sloan Executive Education | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
The downside of wearable fitness technology

It’s almost the time of year for making New Year resolutions, and as always, fitness goals will top most lists. With so many fitness products and technologies available, there are no shortage of tools to help those goals come to fruition. As reported by Investor's Business Daily, Morgan Stanley "expects wearable device shipments to increase from 6 million units in 2013 to 248 million in 2017." Samsung has issued its own research, saying it "expects spending on technology such as smart watches and fitness trackers to increase by 182% this Christmas, compared with last Christmas."  So is there a wearable fitness device on your wish list--or shopping list--this year?

Many consumers unaware that data doesn’t stay on their device

But what most consumers don't realize is a potential big downside to these smart devices: the potential loss of privacy. While the average consumer may think that the data collected lives on their device or in their app, it really lives on servers owned and maintained by the device providers. For this reason,Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has called these devices a "privacy nightmare."

| Internet of Things | IoT | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Roger Smith's curator insight, April 9, 2015 12:53 AM

After testing the security of six Internet of Things (IoT) devices commonly used in homes, Veracode security researchers found that product manufacturers don't put enough focus on security and privacy as a design priority; this puts users "at risk for an attack or physical intrusion." They found vulnerabilities in the devices that could potentially act as a "pathway for robbery, theft of sensitive data or even stalking."

Kaspersky: Internet of Things means Internet of Threats | CyberSecurity | DigitalCitizenShip | eSkills | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
The way Eugene Kaspersky sees it, there may soon come a day when you wake up and your coffeemaker refuses to brew anything – or worse, will only brew decaf – until you pay up on the ransomware that has infected it.

Kaspersky, CEO of Kaspersky Lab, told some of the company’s top partners at its annual North American Partner Conference here this weekend that he believes IoT stands not only for “Internet of Things,” but also for “Internet of Threats.” The emergence of IP and intelligence in an increasing number of previously disconnected devices will lead to new and novel attack vectors, the executive predicted.

It’s not just the pleasures of this world, the benefits and the beauty, that we have to think about,” Kaspersky told partners. “We also have to think about the other side, the bad guys, as well.”

And while the coffee maker was a bit of a perhaps a tongue-in-cheek example, Kaspersky said he does see a variety of attack opportunities on devices that have heretofore not been connected to the network. The first one to be hit, he posited, will be right in our living rooms.

How AI, the IoT and 5G will make all the difference in a smarter world | #SmartCities | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

From fields and streams to offices, factories, hospitals and transportation systems, organizations are using internet of things (IoT) sensors to collect massive amounts of data in order to improve operations and increase sustainability.

Analyzing this information reveals patterns that can nip maintenance problems in the bud and lead to better decisions about resource allocation. As data accumulates, more functions can transition over to automation. Systems become smarter, using artificial intelligence to make speedy decisions without human intervention.

Emergent technologies are poised to radically change how we work and live. They will transform our cities and workplaces, shifting jobs and entrepreneurship in new directions, and spur new ways to manage our lives. All of society will be affected, up to and including how we interact with machines themselves.

Sophisticated machines and applications that communicate online will accelerate demand for broadband internet and challenge existing information and telecommunication norms.

All of this will require ongoing discussions about security, infrastructure and open-data policy and planning. We now need action. We must move past: “We know it’s coming and have to do something” to “Here is how we can implement and collaborate to make it happen.”

The first big Internet of Things security breach is just around the corner | #IoT #IoE #CyberSecurity #Awareness | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

There was a time when the only device you had connected to your network was a PC. Then laptops with a wireless connection came along -- then after that, smartphones and tablets.

But the connected revolution hasn't ended there. Gartner estimates that currently 5.5 million new 'things' -- devices from toasters and kettles to cars and hospital equipment -- are being connected to the internet every single day, and they will total 6.4 billion by the end of the year.

That figure is up from 3.8 billion in 2014, and 5 billion in 2015 and is expected to rise to over 20 billion Internet of Things (IoT) devices being connected to the web in 2020.

Wi-Fi HaLow to extend Wi-Fi solutions for the Internet of Things | IoT | IoE

Wi-Fi HaLow to extend Wi-Fi solutions for the Internet of Things | IoT | IoE | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
With industry momentum mounting around a low power Wi-Fi solution, Wi-Fi Alliance announced the Wi-Fi HaLow designation for products incorporating IEEE 802.11ah technology.

Wi-Fi HaLow operates in frequency bands below one gigahertz, offering longer range, lower power connectivity to Wi-Fi CERTIFIED products. Wi-Fi HaLow will enable a variety of new power-efficient use cases in the Smart Home, connected car, and digital healthcare, as well as industrial, retail, agriculture, and Smart City environments.

Wi-Fi HaLow extends Wi-Fi into the 900 MHz band, enabling the low power connectivity necessary for applications including sensor and wearables. Wi-Fi HaLow’s range is nearly twice that of today’s Wi-Fi, and will not only be capable of transmitting signals further, but also providing a more robust connection in challenging environments where the ability to more easily penetrate walls or other barriers is an important consideration.

Wi-Fi HaLow will broadly adopt existing Wi-Fi protocols and deliver many of the benefits that consumers have come to expect from Wi-Fi today, including multi-vendor interoperability, strong government-grade security, and easy setup.

Welche Sicherheitsrisiken verbergen sich dieses Jahr in Ihren Weihnachtsgeschenken? | Internet Of Things | Privacy | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
