Creative Commons licenses provide a flexible range of protections and freedoms for authors, artists, and educators. Please note that search.creativecommons.org is not a search engine, but rather offers convenient access to search services provided by other independent organizations. CC has no control over the results that are returned. Do not assume that the results displayed in this search portal are under a CC license. You should always verify that the work is actually under a CC license by following the link. Since there is no registration to use a CC license, CC has no way to determine what has and hasn't been placed under the terms of a CC license. If you are in doubt you should contact the copyright holder directly, or try to contact the site where you found the content. This Article shows how the maturing technology of three-dimensional printing can be used to construct an enforceable open hardware license. Open hardware lacks the legal tools which allow the easy implementation of enforceable open source software licenses. As such, existing licenses cannot successfully implement open hardware principles. The author proposes the “Three-Dimensional Printing Open License” (the “TDPL”). The TDPL draws on the unique characteristics of three-dimensional printing to construct a license that incorporates enforceable documentation, attribution and copyleft provisions. As the technology of three dimensional printing improves and is gradually integrated into a broad range of industries, the scope of the license’s application will increase.

Annette Schavan, Germany’s education minister, has been stripped of her doctorate following an investigation of claims that she plagiarized parts of her thesis. A committee of academics at Heinrich Heine University, in Düsseldorf, made the decision late Tuesday after considering the case. The country’s former defense minister quit two years ago in the wake of a similar controversy.

This curriculum is designed to give teachers a comprehensive set of tools to educate students about copyright while incorporating activities that exercise a variety of learning skills. Lesson topics include: the history of copyright law; the relationship between copyright and innovation; fair use and its relationship to remix culture; peer-to-peer file sharing; and the interests of the stakeholders that ultimately affect how copyright is interpreted by copyright owners, consumers, courts, lawmakers, and technology innovators. The lesson plan concludes with a mock trial that tests the students' understanding of copyright and its limitations and encourages them to consider the positions of each party involved. Basic Copyright Principles The Law. Copyright laws protect original works of authorship. The Copyright Act gives the owner of a copyright the exclusive right to do and authorize others to do certain things in regard to a copyrighted work, including: make copies, distribute the work, display or perform the work publicly, and create derivative works. These exclusive rights are subject to only limited exceptions. In academia, the five major exceptions to the copyright owner's exclusive rights are: fair use, the face-to-face teaching exception, the distance-learning exception (codified in the 2002 TEACH Act), the first-sale doctrine, and the library and archives exception. Note that there is no over-arching copyright exception for academic uses; academic journals and text publishers expect royalties for use of their content.
