Adobe issues patches for critical Flash, Reader and Shockwave flaws | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Adobe released security updates for Flash Player, Adobe Reader and Shockwave Player on Tuesday to address critical vulnerabilities that could allow attackers to take control of systems running vulnerable versions of those programs.

Users of Google Chrome and Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8 will automatically receive updates for the Flash Player plug-in bundled with those browsers through their respective update mechanisms.

Users of Adobe Reader or Acrobat XI for Windows and Mac OS X are advised to upgrade to Adobe Reader XI (11.0.04) or Adobe Acrobat XI (11.0.04), respectively. Adobe Reader and Acrobat X for Windows and Mac have also been updated to version 10.1.8.

Why users don't often upgrade software when they should

Why users don't often upgrade software when they should | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Survey finds users ignore update reminders and eschew 'new' features...

Many users don't update to the latest version of the software on their computers because they're not sure the updates are safe or remain unconvinced that any new features will be useful.

Those are among the findings in an online survey of users in the U.S., U.K., and Germany by Skype, Adobe, Norton, and TomTom timed to coincide with last week's International Technology Upgrade Week (ITUW). About 40percent of the respondents -- 42percent in the U.S., 41percent in the U.K., and 37 percent in Germany -- admitted they don't upgrade software when they should.

Critical Security Fixes from Adobe, Microsoft

Critical Security Fixes from Adobe, Microsoft | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Adobe and Microsoft each issued security updates today to fix critical vulnerabilities in their software. Adobe’s fixes include a patch for a Flash Player flaw that is actively being exploited to break into Windows computers. Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday release includes nine patch bundles — more than half of them rated critical — addressing at least 27 security holes in Windows and related software.

Nevertheless, the underlying vulnerability being targeted exists in Windows, Mac and Linux versions of the software. Windows and Mac users can grab the latest version (v. 11.3.300.271) via the Flash Player download center.

Be sure to uncheck the “free” software scans that Adobe loves to bundle with updates, such as McAfee‘s obnoxious Security Scan Plus, if you don’t want it. Linux users should update to v. 11.2.202.238, and Chrome users want to be at v. 11.3.330.270 (normally Chrome auto-updates Flash, but recently it’s been sluggish to do so: my Chrome installation is still at v. 11.3.31.225. I will update this post in a bit with the direct links to the Flash Player downloads.
