Considering Community: Communities of practice as vital tools for knowledge management

Social in silico includes a series of occasional posts focused on community management tips and related information. I’m tagging these Considering Community and you can find all the posts in the series here.

Previously on this blog, I’ve reflected on the different types of community that I’ve observed within science and specifically in the first cohort of the community engagement fellowship program that I run at AAAS. I identified four initial broad types of scientific communities – from professional associations to communities of practice. I’m currently delving deeper into communities of practice and am enjoying reading “Cultivating communities of practice” by Etienne Wenger, Richard McDermott and William M. Snyder.

Communities of practice and coffee – breaking down those silos one latte at a time…

What’s a community of practice – and what does it have to do with knowledge management?
A community of practice is a group of people who gather to learn more about a topic together and in doing so deepen their knowledge and expertise. The group may not have a specifically defined goal, but rather meet regularly to continually refine what they know about a subject. As such, communities of practice are key to knowledge management.

Wenger et al list 5 ways in which communities of practice are key to how we manage knowledge...

How teachers can use Twitter in education?

Twitter is thought to be a social networking platform where individuals share their thought and connect with the entire world including the aspiring things they aim for. You can be quite surprised after coming to know that Twitter has marvellous opportunities to co- function with teachers making a paradigm in the education sector and beyond.

Manuela Mejia's curator insight, September 21, 2016 11:11 PM
Some people think that social networks are not suitable for academic purposes; however, what this article suggests is that teachers can encourage students to use Twitter as a learning platform in which learners and teachers share information about topics related with the academic field. As a teacher in development, I think that we can use almost all the tools that technology gave us, but it is very important that first we teach students how to use them. It is also important that teachers use personal and professional account since you do not want that students know things about your personal life, or maybe you do not want that you family and friends follow things related with their job.

I consider that teachers can create an special section in which students talk about the Tweets that are interesting for them, or maybe make an activity like a reading circle, a debate or a speech in which the students get extra points because it helps that students focus on reading the suggested material and not only looking for the profile accounts of their friends.

One of the most ingenious aspects of Twitter is that if someone is annoying you or being rude, you can simply unfollow them or even block them.

I’ve matured a lot since I got on Twitter years ago. I’ve learned that Twitter relationships and real life relationships are very similar. Just as you would think twice before kicking someone out of your real life, sometimes it might be best to think twice before kicking someone out of your Twitter life also.

How to write engaging tweets in 280 characters | #SocialMedia #Twitter #Communication #Publishing #DigitalMarketing #Press #Journalism  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

If you want to be a successful digital marketer, then you should be aware of the latest updates related to social media. Being one of the most widely used social media platforms out there, Twitter keeps on redefining itself. A while back, it announced the latest update regarding the 280 character limit for tweets. The update was certainly a big relief to many as almost all the marketers used to struggle with the previous 140 character limit.

Now, you can easily level up your social media marketing game on Twitter and reach out to a wider audience for sure. To make things easier for you, I have come up with some expert suggestions that will help you make the most of the Twitter’s latest update.

Details of Twitter’s new update (in a nutshell)
For almost a year now, there have been speculations about the Twitter’s new character limit. It was in the last quarter of 2017 when Twitter finally announced the 280-character update for posting tweets. For languages except Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, Twitter has increased the character limit for tweets from 140 to 280 characters. The attached photos, GIFs, polls, etc. won’t be counted as characters. Though, if you will include a URL, then it will increase the character count. Therefore, it is still recommended to use a URL shortening service while including website links in tweets.

12 ways to make the most of Twitter’s new update
Now when you can tweet in 280 characters, you don’t need to double-check every word you write. Furthermore, it can help you answer customer queries or explain a product to your audience. Here are some interesting ways to use Twitter’s new update.

Learning doesn't have to be a "loner" experience.

Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky suggested that knowledge is constructed through our interactions with others.
MOOCs (Massive Open Online Learning) leverage our inherent social needs by bringing people together to learn the same material in a virtual group. Students can express what they're feeling and experiencing with others in a shared space, making the learning journey more enjoyable and less daunting.

As people gain confidence, they often enjoy friendly competition with fellow learners to push themselves to compete exercises and assignments. Recognition is part of our need for building self-esteem—and some courses have gamification built in to reward student accomplishments and community helpfulness.

This is an interesting intro to social constructionism as it applies to eLearning.  I hope the MOOCs do what they suggest and are not just an attempt to throw jargon out there.

There are two components you have to adjust while making your custom business card design: a one of a kind plan and a convincing conveyance. A conspicuous card would be no great in the event that you give it out without trading merriments with the other individual. In any case, recall that a low-quality card can in like manner debilitate even the best compatibility or the most persuasive discussion.

Tips To Become an Autodidact, Self-Directed Learner | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

As most of you know already, I am an autodidact, a person who is learning on its own. I can choose WHAT to learn, WHEN to learn, in WHICH order I learn the different topics and HOW quick I will learn! AND especially WHERE I will learn; not necessary in a school, BUT online and from books!

What is the Definition of a Lead in Sales? | #Business

What is the Definition of a Lead in Sales? | #Business  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Salespeople and marketing types both toss the word 'lead' around a lot, but they don't always agree on what it means.

Most salespeople define a lead as someone who matches the criterion the salesperson has established and who has the need, reason and/or interest in pursuing the product.

However, marketing professionals tend to define a lead as anyone who might have those qualities, and believe that a lead that proves to have the desired attributes is considered to be a 'prospect.'

txting @ skool | #ChatSpeak #SocialMedia #ModernEDU | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
It wasn’t too long ago that student use of “chatspeak” — texting shorthand, Internet slang, or even emoji — in the classroom seemed as if it might signal the end of grammar and the death of proper English. But with 78 percent of teenagers having access to cell phones, and the majority of children picking one up by age 12, chatspeak is here to stay.

6 Clever Ways Marketers Can Use Twitter Moments to Tell Their Brand's Story

6 Clever Ways Marketers Can Use Twitter Moments to Tell Their Brand's Story | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Twitter rolls out Moments to all users. Here's how to use it to engage your followers.

Twitter seems to be making a series of user-friendly moves to reignite the stagnant growth on the platform and keep pace with other competitors like Instagram and Snapchat, both of whom have powerful storytelling features.

After finally enabling longer tweets earlier last month, Twitter's latest move was to roll out Moments to all users. Previously only selected users and influencers were able to use the feature.

Moments make it easy for users to create a slideshow of curated tweets that marketers can use to tell a story about their brand in a colorful and attractive way.

Twitter makes it easy to curate content and string together tweets for Moments. Users can share a wide variety of content you can display in a Moment from videos, GIFs, links, photos, and infographics, to help tell their stories.

Tweets can be pulled from any account, hashtag, or keyword search and easily added to create a Moment.

To learn how to get started telling your brand's story by watch this short video from Twitter.
