Problem-Based Learning vs. Project-Based Learning

Because they have the same acronym, we get a lot of questions about the similarities and differences between the two PBLs.

Why Kids Need to Tinker to Learn | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Allowing kids to deeply engage with a project they are passionate about also helps produce more positive memories of school, Stager said.
Gust MEES's insight:

One way teachers can incorporate the Maker Movement into the classroom is through project-based learning (PBL), and learning prompts should be “brief, ambiguous and immune to assessment,” Sager said at ISTE. “The best projects push up against the resistance of reality. They work or they don’t work.”

A Design Challenge to Students: Solve a Real-World Problem!

A Design Challenge to Students: Solve a Real-World Problem! | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Creating a safe recreation space for teens; protoyping a recyclable lunch tray; setting up a water delivery system to guard against urban fires; building a public awareness campaign to combat hunger. These are just a few of examples of the types of tasks students are taking on when they participate in the Design Learning Challenge, an effort to get students to figure out how to solve real-world problems in their communities.

Combining project-based learning, with an emphasis on the arts and design thinking, this academic competition now in its third year — a partnership between the Industrial Designers Society of America, or ISDA, and the National Art Education Association, or NAEA — has more than 750 students participating this year.

Let’s take a closer look at problem-based learning, where students work on investigating and resolving a real-world problem. I’ve spoken to a lot of teachers who want to try this method in the classroom but aren’t sure how to get started.

Nancy Sulla to the rescue! In her book, Students Taking Charge: Inside the Learner-Active, Technology-Infused Classroom, she offers the following clear, step-by-step guidelines for creating problem-based assignments.

Exploring education: Project Based Learning – meaningful action … or merely activity?

Exploring education: Project Based Learning – meaningful action … or merely activity? | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

The world is awash with people and groups wishing to reform education.  Some want to go “back to basics” while others want to go “forward to the future”.

Amongst the more progressive groups there is a surprising degree of similarity in what they propose. Thus, the RSA “Opening Minds” project in the UK or the US based P21 or the Apple Classroom of Tomorrow Today all have a high degree of overlap - indeed a Venn diagram of their views would be almost a single circle.

Personalized PBL: Student-Designed Learning

Personalized PBL: Student-Designed Learning | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Project-based learning may be the best vehicle for personalized learning as teachers move beyond "course-based" approaches and open the way for student-designed curriculum.

Not every teacher may be ready to jump into this type of personalization. To make it work, they'll be required to adopt a different teaching role. They'll need strong management skills and a commitment to disruptive innovation. In addition, the current constructs of the education system may hold us back. What if we could make this dream of personalized PBL a reality?

===> I say that we work toward it, creating a push on the system that demands change in the education of our students. <===

Kim Flintoff's curator insight, August 21, 2014 9:13 PM

An art teacher and I (drama teacher) started to use a negotiated approach with students about 15 years ago.  By working with students to be aware of curriculum expectations and discussing "what would this look like" we assisted students with developingntheir own learnign pathways and expressions of their learning - in keeping with the legislated requirements of curriculum.  I've also noted over the years that elements of the International Baccalaureate - particularly the project work from MYP - reflects a similar approach.

Without reference to research literature, I'd speculate that this speaks to engagement, authenticity and relevance... and needn't be confined to K-12 contexts.... well-documented project work could be conducted outside the confines of formal classes and evidenced against formal assessment criteria.

Collaboration with my peers has certainly pushed my thinking and my attachments to cherished methods. It has stretched me, allowed me to realize what I should hold onto and what I should let go. It's been tough, challenging -- but most of all, extremely satisfying.

Gust MEES: I did this collaboration already 5 years ago on Google Knol and I have a very positive experience with it (OK, there were also bad moments...) and once found the right online friends it is a pleasure to publish together with them on the same Blog! This makes it possible to have different authors on a same blog, a multicultural publication is so possible!
