The dangerous downsides of perfectionism

The dangerous downsides of perfectionism | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Many of us believe perfectionism is a positive. But researchers are finding that it could be dangerous, leading to a long list of health problems – and that it’s on the rise.

In fact, many researchers say that factors often dubbed ‘healthy’ perfectionism, like striving for excellence, aren’t actually perfectionism at all.

They’re just conscientiousness – which explains why people with those tendencies often have different outcomes in studies. Perfectionism, they argue, isn’t defined by working hard or setting high goals. It’s that critical inner voice.

Take the student who works hard and gets a poor mark. If she tells herself: “I’m disappointed, but it’s okay; I’m still a good person overall,” that’s healthy. If the message is: “I’m a failure. I’m not good enough,” that’s perfectionism.

Perfectionism, Procrastination, and Distress

Perfectionism, Procrastination, and Distress | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
A study that examines traits that predict psychological distress...

Excessive concerns about making mistakes, pernicious self-doubt, harsh self-criticism, impossibly high standards or expectations for performance, a strong and chronic tendency to evaluate one’s performance as not measuring up to levels expected by oneself or others - these are features of maladaptive perfectionism that predict psychological distress.

This article shows that perfectionism can be just as big a cause of stress as procrastination.  That the correlation between the two  is modest.  Procrastinators seem only minimally self-critical.  They have previous research as well as credible sources that they used in their research as well.

On the surface, striving for perfection in the things we do is a good thing. It helps us plan, organize, strategize and achievegoals. But there is a flip side to perfectionism that can harm children and teens as they journey through their school years.

How should parents and educators help kids understand their perfectionist tendencies so that doing their best doesn’t drag them down?
