The End of Leadership--at Least As We Know It! | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Hence the trend being many organisations and practitioners not endorsing American based approaches and either creating their own locally as well as those of Europe, Asia and Middle East many of which are currently producing better economic outcomes.

Désapprendre, apprendre à apprendre: les objectifs éducatifs du XXIème siècle ?

Désapprendre, apprendre à apprendre: les objectifs éducatifs du XXIème siècle ? | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Leading Motivated Learners: Principals Need PD Too

Leading Motivated Learners: Principals Need PD Too | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

As I have started doing preliminary research for my dissertation I have discovered that high quality, relevant and sustainable Professional Development (PD) opportunities for principals (and building leaders in general) are limited. How is that possible?

- Principals are supposed to be visionaries!

- Principals are supposed to be transformational in their leadership!

- Principals are supposed to be responsible for the learning and growth for all those around them!

How can all that be accomplished without proper support through high quality PD?

I'm not 100% certain but what I do know is that upon reflecting on the various workshops and conferences I have attended in my eight years as a building leader, not many of them have given me knowledge or information or resources to best support my role as an instructional leader (except for Twitter, which has led me to this potential dissertation study)! It's no wonder finding effective principals who are good at their job and are willing to stay in the position for an extended period of time to support growth, change and learning is more the exception and not the rule.

Is this because they lack support? Is it because they lack the "necessary" skills? Or is it because they lack high quality PD??

5 Tools to Help Students Learn How to Learn | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Jamie Nast/Flickr Helping students learn how to learn: That's what most educators strive for, and that's the goal of inquiry learning.

That skill transfers to other academic subject areas and even to the workplace where employers have consistently said that they want creative, innovative and adaptive thinkers. Inquiry learning is an integrated approach that includes kinds of learning: content, literacy, information literacy, learning how to learn, and social or collaborative skills.

===> Students think about the choices they make throughout the process and the way they feel as they learn. <===

Those observations are as important as the content they learn or the projects they create.

7 Ways Teaching Has Changed

7 Ways Teaching Has Changed | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
This Is The World Teachers Must Adapt To: 7 Ways Teaching Has Changed by Terry Heick Teachers are the arbitrators of knowledge and culture. Knowledge…

7. A culture that can seem, well, distracted

And if we’re going to talk about the world teachers must adapt to, the idea of distraction has to be at least mentioned.

.

I’m not sure any of us fully understand the complexities of modern connectivity, information access, and the subjective idea of “distraction.” (After all, if five people are all at a table at Starbucks with their faces stuck to their phones, who’s to say their physical company rather than the respective apps that their own aren’t doing the distracting?)

.

That said, things are certainly different than the BS era of yesteryear (that is, before smartphones). At any moment someone can bust out a digital screen and start smearing their fingers across it. And no one knows what they’re doing and so we assume the worst and say the world is going down in flames.

.

And it very well could be. This is all new, so we don’t know. This is an era full of possibility, uncertainty, excitement, loss, and change.

.

This is the world teachers must adapt to.

Gust MEES's insight:

Priscilla Der's curator insight, April 6, 2014 10:29 PM

This article relates back to Global Competency as teachers must stay current with societal changes and shifts. Relating to students and engaging students require teachers to stay current and in the know vs. sticking to traditional routes/techniques in which we were taught with. We must continuously adjust our teaching to fit the 21st century needs and keep re-adjusting to align these needs to the Common Core curriculum.

Why new technologies could never replace great teaching

Why new technologies could never replace great teaching | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Technology in education gets plenty of hype, but let's not forget the importance of teaching and learning, says Pamela Wright

So where do I stand as an educator, as a leader in education? The centre point of my passion is a philosophy that I instil into my staff, into the school and into every school I support. It is the child – first and foremost.

Teachers don't simply teach concepts and skills. Any new technology can do that.

Good teachers inspire our young people to be lifelong learners, creating a culture of independent enquiry with their enthusiasm and passion. I know this because I see it every day. Good teachers have the skills to know exactly how to get the best out of each and every young person in their care.

The 8 Aspects of Teacher Learning

The 8 Aspects of Teacher Learning | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

You've heard us use the phrase 'lifelong learner' often enough to know that we believe it to be a necessity for today's digital students.

This is especially true in a world that's changing with the rapidity of our own, thanks to the influx digital culture. But how does lifelong learning apply to the profession of teaching? More and more educators are discovering and embracing the changes happening in their profession, and realizing that their own learning journeys are still progressing on exciting new pathways.

The aspects of this kind of learning can now be identified, and you'll see them by reading this article by Sister Geralyn Schmidt, featured recently on the PLP Network. And it all started for her with one little book ....”

5 Excellent Strategies to Teach Students how to Learn

5 Excellent Strategies to Teach Students how to Learn | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

" Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day but teach him to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime " this quip summarizes the essence of education and learning. Teach students how to learn and they will learn for the rest of their lives. The focus should be on the process not the end product, but unfortunately today's educational system with its emphasis on high stake tests and standardized assessment puts the cart in front of the horse and turn students into empty pails that require filling up each time they are to pass a test.

To redress the situation and empower our students with the learning and social skills they need to thrive in tomorrow's job market, inquiry based learning is the answer.

Lessons in Learning to Learn

Lessons in Learning to Learn | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Should we be teaching children how to learn as well as what to learn? Well, duh! as the children say.

This task they struggle with, despite prompts from the teacher. ‘Haven’t you learnt anything??’ The student perception that nothing is learnt at school is a telling indictment of our content-driven curriculum which turns a budding 11 year old learner into a passive, spoon-fed test taker by 16.

Little wonder that we despair of our post-16 student’s ability to think for themselves at AS level.

The idea for the ‘learning to learn’ lessons developed from early work with raising standards groups in Year 11 where accelerated learning techniques and learning style strategies seemed to improve confidence and performance. My theory was why don’t we catch them before the rot sets in?

Trying to create a ‘learning’ school at a successful well-established comprehensive with a stable staff profile has been fascinating and a truly ‘learning’ experience. We have made some progress, we have had some resistance from staff but, most importantly, the students have really enjoyed the experience.
