SWGfL Staying Safe provides e-Safety information and resources for parents, schools and young people, whilst also presenting the latest e-Safety news.

Curriculum in a Nutshell
Digital media and technology are evolving at a dizzying pace, bringing with them extraordinary opportunities as well as real risks for young people. Young people are using the immense power of the Internet and mobile technologies to explore, connect, create, and learn in ways never before imagined. These technologies have changed the pattern of social relationships, their construction, negotiation and scope. The concept of “friends” and friendship has changed with the boundaries of privacy changing and evolving. Issues that emerge with this 24/7 “connected culture” – from identity theft, to cyberbullying, to uncertainty about which information to trust online – are surfacing both in schools and at home.

SWGfL is providing this FREE Digital Literacy and Citizenship Curriculum to help educators empower their students and their school communities to be safe, responsible, and savvy as they navigate this fast-paced digital world.

The curriculum:

- Introduces reliable, research-based information to students about digital media and their impact

- Helps pupils / students explore the complex issues of our connected culture

- Empowers pupils /students to think critically about the ways they use digital technologies as they build digital literacy skills for life

- Develops a resilience in pupils / students to act appropriately and safely in their use of digital technologies

Teacher's Guide to Assessing Credibility of Online Resources

Teacher's Guide to Assessing Credibility of Online Resources | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Internet has definitely marked a revolution in the way human knowledge is being generated, shared, communicated, and stored. The answer to almost any question is available within seconds, courtesy of the invention that has altered how we discover knowledge – the search engine. With this abundance of online information comes the question of credibility. Some critics argue that a tsunami of hogwash has already rendered the Web useless. I disagree. We are indeed inundated by online noise pollution, but the problem is soluble.

The Critical 21st Century Skills Every Learner Needs and Why | #ModernEDUcation #ModernLEARNing | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Preparing a child for the world that doesn’t yet exist is not an easy task for any teacher. Step back and look at that picture from a broad perspective. What are the critical 21st-century skills every learner needs to survive and succeed in our world? What abilities and traits will serve them in a time that’s changing and developing so rapidly?

They want to be challenged and inspired in their learning. They want to collaborate and work with their peers. They want to incorporate the technology they love into their classroom experiences as much as they can. In short, they have just as high a set of expectations of their educators as their educators have of them.

How Are Educators Responding?

The Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority, (ACARA), have identified the following as the General Capabilities they see as essential for learners:

Critical and creative thinking

Personal and social capability

Ethical understanding

Intercultural understanding

Information and communication technology capability

Critical Digital Literacy Explained for Teachers

Critical Digital Literacy Explained for Teachers | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Critical digital literacy is one of the essential required competencies for the 21st century educator. In an era of unprecedented personal publishing, infobesity (information obesity) becomes a real issue. Teachers need to be able to critically  assess and evaluate the materials and knowledge they come across. This could be done through adopting a critical thinking lens to filter things that could otherwise unconsciously affect one's stance and interpretation of  a given meaning.

Juliet Hinrichsen and Antony Coombs from University of Greenwich developed this excellent framework to help you understand the concept of critical digital literacy. This framework is made up of 5 dimensions:

Dr. Dea Conrad-Curry's curator insight, December 12, 2014 12:14 PM

About five years ago, I worked with a large suburban school on developing awareness and teaching/learning skill sets in the area of critical literacy. The nuances of digital and even print text within structure and conventions suggests meaning that extends far beyond the alphabetic word. This framework would have been a helpful tool to ground discussion and build understanding.

The 8 Key Elements Of Digital Literacy

The 8 Key Elements Of Digital Literacy | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Many teachers have added ‘digital literacy’ as number four on the list of literacies their students should have (or be working towards, in most cases). Skilled, Literate & Fluent in the Digital World

Skilled, Literate & Fluent in the Digital World | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
I have been intrigued with the relationship of being skilled, literate and fluent in the Digital World for a while. We are focusing at school to look through the lens of fluency using technology as...
Gust MEES's insight:

Note that a literate person is perfectly capable of using the tools. They know how to use them and what to do with them, but the outcome is less likely to match their intention. It is not until that person reaches a level of fluency, however, that they are comfortable with when to use the tools to achieve the desired outcome, and even why the tools they are using are likely to have the desired outcome at all.
