Steps to Creating the Conditions for Deep, Rigorous, Applied Learning | Infographic

Steps to Creating the Conditions for Deep, Rigorous, Applied Learning | Infographic | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Many school administrators, teachers and parents want the education provided to children to be high quality, rigorous and connected to the world outside the classroom. Teachers are trying to provide these elements in various ways, but a group of schools calling themselves the “Deeper Learning Network” have codified some of what they believe are essential qualities of deep learning (check out how students lead parent teacher conferences in this model).

Some of these qualities include learning designated content, critical thinking, communication skills, collaborating effectively and connecting learning to real-world experiences.

A primer on the "Deeper Learning Network."  None of this is new but it is integrated as a practical solution.

Sue Alexander's curator insight, February 27, 2015 9:08 AM

Our school is working hard on these goals...a great resource to help spread the word.

Tasia Thompson's curator insight, February 27, 2015 10:31 AM

This really speaks to the focus of the East Zone AP's on how can we enrich  our school's culture and climate in particular areas as related to improved student growth and learning.

Online + face-to-face = blended learning

Online + face-to-face = blended learning | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

“Blended learning is about engaging students in ===>  deeper learning <===,” says Ron Cramer, senior learning technology consultant. “It’s about blending online and face-to-face activities together in a thoughtful way.”

Gust MEES's insight:

To me Learning is anyway deeper learning as I am a hard critical thinking person, BUT as THEY want to describe it that way, WHY NOT, agreed ;)

Ainsley Stollar's curator insight, March 6, 2014 10:57 AM

This article talks about how a type of learning called blended learning has been created to put minds at ease. It was created to help engage students in a deeper type of learning than the usual shallow learning implemented in a classroom. It relates because students are allowed to discuss their success without feeling the pressure of failure.

Social Media and Teaching
This is my online reflective diary on how social media – Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, Google Plus, to name a few – is being used by teachers to build their PLN - Professional Learning Network and invest in their PD - Professional Development. What cannot be ignored is the institutional shift to and investment in web-based platforms to provide ongoing development for their teachers.

One of the most exciting ideas presented in the paper is what we truly believe to be the future of teacher preparation and ongoing development--micro-credentials, likely displayed as digital badges--that would signify accomplishment and measure and reward competency-based outcomes for educators.

Why Teaching Helps Students Learn More Deeply

Why Teaching Helps Students Learn More Deeply | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
For thousands of years, people have known that the best way to understand a concept is to explain it to someone else. “While we teach, we learn,” said the Roman philosopher Seneca.
Gust MEES's insight:

Students enlisted to tutor others, these researchers have found, work harder to understand the material, recall it more accurately and apply it more effectively. In a phenomenon that scientists have dubbed “the protégé effect,” student teachers score higher on tests than pupils who are learning only for their own sake.

But how can children, still learning themselves, teach others? One answer: They can tutor younger kids. The benefits of this practice were indicated by a pair of articles published in 2007 in the journals Science and Intelligence.

The studies concluded that first-born children are more intelligent than their later-born brothers and sisters and suggested

===> that their higher IQs result from the time they spend showing their younger siblings the ropes. <===
