What Is DNS and Why Does It Make the Internet Break? | #ICT #CyberSecurity #DDoS #CyberAttacks  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Today, half of America’s internet shut down when hackers unleashed a large distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack on the servers of Dyn, a major DNS host. It’s still unclear exactly who carried out the attack and why, but regardless, the event served as a demonstration of how easily large swaths of the web can be wiped out if attacked by determined hackers.

Cybercriminals Abuse Mobile Applications to Launch DDOS Attacks

Cybercriminals Abuse Mobile Applications to Launch DDOS Attacks | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Distributed denial-of-service (DDOS) attack protection solutions provider Prolexic has published its Global DDOS Attack Report for the fourth quarter ...

“The prevalence of mobile devices and the widespread availability of downloadable apps that can be used for DDoS is a game changer,” explained Stuart Scholly, president of Prolexic.

Malicious actors now carry a powerful attack tool in the palm of their hands, which requires minimal skill to use. Because it is so easy for mobile device users to opt-in to DDoS attack campaigns, we expect to see a considerable increase in the use of these attack tools in 2014,” Scholly added.

Research shows “dramatic growth” in global cyber attacks

Research shows “dramatic growth” in global cyber attacks | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Data from Websense Labs has identified a dramatic increase in cyber attacks during 2012, led by an astounding 600% increase in malicious web links detected by the company’s ThreatSeeker monitoring network.
Gust MEES's insight:

The most significant finding was the dramatic 600% increase in malicious web links worldwide, led a 720% increase in North America and an uptick of 531% in the EMEA region. This increased volume is likely attributed to a fragmentation of attacks, according to Charles Renert, VP of research and development for Websense Labs, the research arm of the data security provider. He told Infosecurity that attacks are now being distributed on a more diverse geographic basis, “and a widening of this net is of value to the attacker community”.

4 Turning Points in Cybercrime History

4 Turning Points in Cybercrime History | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Data breaches happen on a near daily basis, and often they have a profoundly negative impact on the attacked business. But in some cases, they can change the security industry and influence legislation.

“Security breaches are relatively immeasurable, but the economic impact is small compared to the loss of confidence in security from the populace and from customers,” Carl Herberger of security solutions company Radware, told Mashable.

From millions of credit cards stolen from a national retailer to attacks conducted by other countries, here's a look at some noteworthy data breaches.

Cyber attacks a threat to internet efficiency

Cyber attacks a threat to internet efficiency | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

On 4 November, Neelie Kroes Commissioner responsible for the Digital Agenda stressed the threat of cyber-security hacking for the efficiency of Internet Services. “Incidents (also linked to human mistakes) and attacks are clearly on the rise…the number of web based attacks went up 36% in the year 2011.”

During his speech in the Information Security Forum Conference in Chicago, Kroes urged for bringing cyber security in the top of the political agenda. Acknowledging that most of the cyber networks and infrastructures are privately owned, the Commissioner recognised the limited role of the public authorities.
