Finland: education unions welcomes new core curriculum in Early Childhood Education | #ModernEDU | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

20 Elements of an Amazing School Curriculum

20 Elements of an Amazing School Curriculum | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Of course, before I share this with you, I also want to remind you that I am quick to embrace and celebrate an ecosystem of diverse schools. What I describe below is neither the best or only way to create an amazing school curriculum. Yet, I can write with confidence that this would certainly contribute to a rich, engaging and rewarding school experience; one that gives ample voice and choice to learners while challenging them to grow in character, competence, confidence,  and purpose.

What is Curriculum?

The word “curriculum”, as best as I can tell, comes from the idea of a race course. It is a course of study, a pathway that leads to some destination. Yet, others simply define it in the broadest sense as everything that goes into a student’s learning experience in a formal education program. Traditionally, people thought of the curriculum in terms of content, assessments, resources (like books and other readings), teacher-guided lessons and learning experiences, and the like. Yet, more recently, much conversation about curriculum focuses upon standards, outcomes, resources, and assessments; the items that we frequently see in curriculum maps.

Le numérique au service de la pédagogie...

Audrey's curator insight, April 3, 2015 2:51 PM

Absolutely agree, students who take responsibility for their learning do so much better when taking exams.  In addition, when  a student can teach you and put forward their own evaluative commentary, they are ready for university.

Creating items for a technology-based learning environment is a tedious and long process that requires a huge number of actors, all with different skills and talents. What Makes a Master Teacher

What Makes a Master Teacher | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

My name is George Couros, and I am currently a Division Principal of Innovative Teaching and Learning with Parkland School Division, located in Stony Plain, Alberta, Canada. The schools are from ages K-12, and I love working with kids of all ages.

I am passionate about distributed leadership within my division, and believe that creating a collaborative environment with all stakeholders, will help to ensure that we meet the best needs of all children.

The term “master teacher” seems to get thrown around a lot, but is something that many educators aspire to be. In my ten years in the field of education, I would say that the definition of “master teacher” has definitely changed. When I think of a master teacher, here are the qualities that I would suggest they have:

1. Connects with kids first

2. Teaches kids first and curriculum second

3. Ensures that they draw relevance to curriculum

4. Works with students to develop a love of learning

5. Embodies lifelong learning

6. Focuses on learning goals as opposed to performance goals

7. Ensures that “character education” is an essential part of learning

8. Passionate about the content they teach

9. A master teacher is a “school teacher” -

10. Strong communication skills
