Essay on what the political campaign shows about the need for critical thinking | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

1. The ability to think empirically, not theoretically.

2. The ability to think in terms of multiple, rather than single, causes.

3. The ability to think in terms of the sizes of things, rather than only in terms of their direction.

4. The ability to think like foxes, not hedgehogs.

5. The ability to understand one's own biases.

The State of Critical Thinking Today

The State of Critical Thinking Today | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Faculty Lack a Substantive Concept of Critical Thinking

Studies demonstrate that most college faculty lack a substantive concept of critical thinking. Consequently they do not (and cannot) use it as a central organizer in the design of instruction. It does not inform their conception of the student’s role as learner. It does not affect how they conceptualize their own role as instructors. They do not link it to the essential thinking that defines the content they teach.

=============================================

Gust MEES

I make a break in here to show the "about" of that web site with the following site text here:

Critical thinking is essential if we are to get to the root of our problems and develop reasonable solutions.

===> After all, the quality of everything we do is determined by the quality of our thinking. <===

Whereas society commonly promotes values laden with superficial, immediate "benefits," critical thinking cultivates substance and true intellectual discipline. It entails rigorous self-reflection and openmindedness — the keys to significant changes. Critical thinking requires the cultivation of core intellectual virtues such as intellectual humility, perseverance, integrity, and responsibility. Nothing of real value comes easily.

===> A rich intellectual environment — alive with curious and determined students — is possible only with critical thinking at the foundation of the educational process. <===

Critical Thinking

Critical Thinking | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
I am interested in this post and post on critical thinking. Is critical thinking a skill?  Can one teach critical thinking? Stephen has delivered the course on Critical Literacies MOOC in the past....

Robert H. Ennis, Author of The Cornell Critical Thinking Tests
“Critical thinking is reasonable, reflective thinking that is focused on deciding what to believe and do.”

Assuming that critical thinking is reasonable reflective thinking focused on deciding what to believe or do, a critical thinker:

1. Is open-minded and mindful of alternatives
2. Tries to be well-informed
3. Judges well the credibility of sources
4. Identifies conclusions, reasons, and assumptions
5. Judges well the quality of an argument, including the acceptability of its reasons, assumptions, and evidence
6. Can well develop and defend a reasonable position
7. Asks appropriate clarifying questions
8. Formulates plausible hypotheses; plans experiments well
9. Defines terms in a way appropriate for the context
10. Draws conclusions when warranted, but with caution
11. Integrates all items in this list when deciding what to believe or do

What are the principles of critical thinking?

- Knowledge is acquired only through thinking, reasoning, and questioning. Knowledge is based on facts.

- It is only from learning how to think that you learn what to think.

- Critical thinking is an organized and systematic process used to judge the effectiveness of an argument.

- Critical thinking is a search for meaning.

- Critical thinking is a skill that can be learned.

- Do the above principles hold true and won’t change from one domain to the next?

Becoming a Critic Of Your Thinking

Becoming a Critic Of Your Thinking | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Becoming a Critic Of Your Thinking

By Dr. Linda Elder and Dr. Richard Paul

Learning the Art of Critical Thinking

Critical thinking is the disciplined art of ensuring that you use the best thinking you are capable of in any set of circumstances. The general goal of thinking is to “figure out the lay of the land” in any situation we are in. We all have multiple choices to make. We need the best information to make the best choices.

What is really going on in this or that situation? Are they trying to take advantage of me? Does so-and-so really care about me? Am I deceiving myself when I believe that…? What are the likely consequences of failing to …? If I want to do …, what is the best way to prepare for it? How can I be more successful in doing…? Is this my biggest problem, or do I need to focus my attention on something else?

Successfully responding to such questions is the daily work of thinking. However, to maximize the quality of your thinking, you must learn how to become an effective "critic" of your thinking. And to become an effective critic of your thinking, you have to make learning about thinking a priority.

Six Vintage-Inspired Animations on Critical Thinking

A field guide to the art and science of the solid argument.

Australian outfit Bridge 8, who have the admirable mission of devising “creative strategies for science and society,” and animator James Hutson have created six fantastic two-minute animations on various aspects of critical thinking, aimed at kids ages 8 to 10 but also designed to resonate with grown-ups.

Inspired by the animation style of the 1950s, most recognizably Saul Bass, the films are designed to promote a set of educational resources on critical thinking by TechNYou, an emerging technologies public information project funded by the Australian government.

Tech Transformation: Knowledge -v- Wisdom

Tech Transformation: Knowledge -v- Wisdom | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

After a typical day on planet Earth ... the Earth will be a little hotter, its waters more acidic, and the fabric of life more threadbare. The truth is that many things on which your future health and prosperity depends are in dire jeopardy: climate stability, the resilience and productivity of natural systems, the beauty of the natural world, and biological diversity.

It is worth noting that this is not the work of ignorant people. It is rather, largely, the result of work by

===> people with BAs, BSs, LLBs, MBAs and PhDs. <===

Great leaders think strategically. They can understand and appreciate the current state as well as see possibilities.
