Manche Menschen zweifeln noch immer am Klimawandel, zum Beispiel der künftige US-Präsident Donald Trump. Dabei gibt es deutliche Hinweise wie die Polschmelze oder immer häufiger auftretende Naturkatastrophen. Vor allem eine Sache ist unübersehbar: Das Abschmelzen der Gletscher auf der Nordhalbkugel.

Duo is lightening-quick, encrypted and works on both iOS and Android. The team worked with WebRTC to create a new protocol that allows for instant creation of an encrypted connection, a feature that keeps you from answering the call only to be faced with a blank screen while you wait on both ends’ video feeds to catch up.

THEY don’t drink, they don’t get tired and they don’t go on strike. To hospital managers, the idea of robots operating on patients without human intervention is an attractive one. To patients, though, the crucial question is, “are they better than human surgeons?” Surgery is messy and complicated. A routine operation can become life-threatening in minutes.

Such considerations have meant that the role of robots in operating theatres has been limited until now to being little more than motorised, precision tools for surgeons to deploy—a far cry from the smart surgical pods and “med-bays” of science fiction. But a paper published this week in Science Translational Medicine, by Peter Kim of the Children’s National Health System in Washington, DC, and his colleagues, brings the idea of real robot surgeons, operating under only the lightest of human supervision, a step closer. Though not yet let loose on people, it has successfully stitched up the intestines of piglets.

DO YOU SEE A SNAKE OR A SPIDER? Dec. 16, 2016 - The head of a tiny snake stares at you. Odd blotches beneath its eyes pulsate over the serpent’s seeming smile. But the whole impression is an illusion. Those blobs actually belong to a little orb-weaver spider.

The captivating footage of this arthropod was filmed by photographer Nicky Bay in a forested area of Singapore. Spider expert Joseph Koh thinks the species is probably Cyrtarachne inaequalis.

Other facts about this little animal remain unknown. The fake snake show may be biomimicry, but scientists don’t know for sure. And the pulsing blobs themselves? Another mystery.

Unbelievable, impressive...

Strictly speaking, video isn’t an interactive medium, but a new research project from MIT aims to change that: The school’s CSAIL lab has come up with a technique through which viewers can reach out and “touch” objects in videos, manipulating them directly to achieve effects similar to what you’d expect if you were actually touching the object live in the real world.

Basically, that means that using this technique, if you were watching a YouTube video of someone playing guitar and it zoomed in tight on the fretboard, you could theoretically use your mouse to drag across the strings and watch them vibrate as if you’d strummed them in real life. Or, you could even load test an old covered bridge by applying virtual stressors like simulated wind, or a truck rumbling across.

The new CSAIL model works by analyzing vibrations given off by every object, as captured using traditional cameras shooting video that is then analyzed by algorithms developed by the research team. These vibrations, when analyzed by the new technique from as little as five seconds of video of a given object, then provide realistic prediction models that anticipate how the object will react to other movement or forces acting upon them.

The Smart Tissue Autonomous Robot (STAR) was designed at the Children’s National Medical Center as an attempt to bring automation to soft-tissue surgery, a field where the versatility and spatial skills of human surgeons have long made them essential.
