Vikings from Greenland — the first Europeans to arrive in the Americas — lived in a village in Canada’s Newfoundland exactly 1,000 years ago, according to research published Wednesday.

Scientists have known for many years that Vikings — a name given to the Norse by the English they raided — built a village at L’Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland around the turn of the millennium. But a study published in Nature is the first to pinpoint the date of the Norse occupation.

The explorers — up to 100 people, both women and men — felled trees to build the village and to repair their ships, and the new study fixes a date they were there by showing they cut down at least three trees in the year 1021 — at least 470 years before Christopher Columbus reached the Bahamas in 1492.

The United States and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced an agreement Sunday that would allow the two nations to collaborate on matters of space and aeronautics research, including the potential journey to Mars.

NASA announced the news on its website, saying that officials who met in Abu Dhabi are looking forward to the partnership that they hope will not only strengthen the relationship between the two countries, but also contribute to the field.

“NASA is leading an ambitious journey to Mars that includes partnerships with the private sector and many international partners,” said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden. “I am confident this new framework agreement with the UAE Space Agency will help advance this journey.

The electric Ehang 184 passenger drone can go as high as 11,500 feet and fly up to 63 miles per hour.

Some U.S. government agencies are using IT systems running Windows 3.1, the decades-old COBOL and Fortran programming languages, or computers from the 1970s.

A backup nuclear control messaging system at the U.S. Department of Defense runs on an IBM Series 1 computer, first introduced in 1976, and uses eight-inch floppy disks, while the Internal Revenue Service's master file of taxpayer data is written in assembly language code that's more than five decades old, according to a new report from the Government Accountability Office.

Some agencies are still running Windows 3.1, first released in 1992, as well as the newer but unsupported Windows XP, Representative Jason Chaffetz, a Utah Republican, noted during a Wednesday hearing on outdated government IT systems.

The government is spending more than US$80 billion a year on IT, and "it largely doesn't work," Chaffetz said during a House of Representatives Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing. "The federal government is years, and sometimes decades, behind the private sector."

University of California, Irvine researchers recently invented nanowire-based battery material that can be recharged not hundreds of times but hundreds of thousands of times. Dare we say it? These batteries might last practically forever.

Die Drohne passt in jede Hosentasche und soll den Soldaten bei der Erkundung des Geländes helfen. Dazu besitzt die Mini-Drohne drei Kameras (eine nach vorne, zwei jeweils zur Seite), die die Live-Bilder und Fotos an den Bildschirm des Steuerungsgeräts senden. Die Flugzeit liegt bei 25 Minuten und die maximale Entfernung bei 1,6 Kilometern.
