Der Vater des World Wide Web, Tim Berners-Lee, betrachtet die dezentrale Datenbanktechnik Blockchain nicht als die praktikabelste Lösung für den Aufbau der nächsten Generation des Internets. "Ignorieren Sie den Web3-Kram", riet der Physiker und Informatiker dem Publikum am Freitag auf dem Web Summit in Lissabon laut dem US-Sender CNBC. Er zeigte sich demnach von den Zukunftsplänen der Krypto-Visionäre überhaupt nicht überzeugt.

Web3 "ist gar nicht das Web"
"Es ist wichtig, Klarheit zu schaffen, um die Auswirkungen neuer Technologien zu debattieren", erklärte Berners-Lee dem Bericht zufolge auf der großen Konferenzbühne. "Man muss verstehen, was die Begriffe, über die wir diskutieren, tatsächlich bedeuten, jenseits der Schlagworte".

Der Informatiker und Physiker bezeichnete es demnach als "echte Schande", dass "die Ethereum-Leute" die bereits existierende Bezeichnung Web3 "für die Dinge" übernommen hätten, "die sie mit Blockchain machen". In Wirklichkeit sei diese Form des Web3 "gar nicht das Web".

The goal, he said, is to move toward “the web that I originally wanted.”

“Pods,” personal online data stores, are a key technical ingredient to achieve that goal. The idea is that each person could control his or her own data — websites visited, credit card purchases, workout routines, music streamed — in an individual data safe, typically a sliver of server space.

Tim Berners-Lee ist nicht glücklich mit dem, was aus seiner Erfindung – dem WWW – geworden ist, und sieht es an einem kritischen Punkt angekommen. L'informaticien britannique se dit « dévasté » par ce qu'est devenu le Web. Au MIT, il a lancé un nouveau projet open source visant à inventer une nouvelle architecture redonnant le pouvoir aux internautes.

De son côté, ce lauréat du prix Alan Turing qui a été anobli par la reine britannique, chapeaute depuis 2016 au MIT le projet Solid, une architecture qui découple applications et données. Dans son modèle, chaque individu est propriétaire de ses données, qu'il stocke dans des sortes de capsules sur le service cloud de son choix ou sur ses propres terminaux. Il possède ensuite un set de clefs permettant de donner l'accès à différents services.

« Dans ce système, plus besoin d'être sur Flickr pour voir les photos de ses amis - il est possible d'utiliser une application concurrente pour les visionner », explique-t-il. Le projet est encore au stade de développement, mais Tim Berners-Lee espère qu'il pourra proposer un compte Solid à tous les internautes d'ici quelques mois.

First, there was web1 – aka the internet we all know and love. Then there was web2 – the user-generated web, heralded by the arrival of social media. Now, wherever we look, people are talking about web3 (or sometimes, web 3.0) – the supposed next big evolutionary leap forward of the internet. But what is it, exactly?


What is Web3 All About? An Easy Explanation With Examples 

Well, opinions on this differ somewhat. Web3 is currently a work-in-progress and isn’t exactly defined yet. However, the main principle is that it will be decentralized – rather than controlled by governments and corporations, as is the case with today’s internet – and, to some extent, connected to the concept of the “metaverse."

Before we start – just to avoid confusion – it’s worth mentioning that, until a few years ago, the term “web 3.0” was frequently used to describe what is now known as the “semantic web." This was a concept put forward by the original "father of the internet," Sir Tim Berners-Lee, for a machine-to-machine internet. Language is defined by its use, and the term is more frequently used to describe something else now. However, Berners-Lee’s concepts are considered to be a part of what we now call web3, although not the entirety of it.

If you're not happy with tech giants owning and controlling your data and online habits, Sir Tim Berners-Lee's startup, Inrupt, could provide the answer. 

Berners-Lee, who's credited with creating the web while working at CERN, has announced the first enterprise-ready version of Inrupt's Enterprise Solid Server, an open-source program that aims to embody the World Wide Web Consortium's (WC3) Ethical Web Principles. 

Inrupt wants to steer the web in a new direction, away from its control by a few tech and social-media giants. The company proposes to do this via 'pods' – comparable to a personal USB stick for the web – which aren't locked in to a single platform and give users the controls to access and use their data.

Web-Erfinder Tim Berners Lee hat zum Auftakt des Web Summit in Lissabon dazu aufgerufen, die “vielen Probleme” des Webs anzugehen. Das freie Internet werde bedroht durch Missbrauch, Desinformation und Kontrollverlust. Das Web brauche also einen Neustart. An die Besucher, die an der Gestaltung des Web mitwirken, appellierte Berners-Lee, die Benutzer wieder mehr in den Fokus zu rücken.

Gemeinsam soll die Gemeinschaft die Probleme der einen Hälfte der Menschheit lösen helfen, etwa Fake News und Datenmissbrauch, und der anderen Hälfte helfen, ins Netz zu kommen. Die Web Foundation, der Berners-Lee vorsteht, ruft die vielen Delegierten und Unternehmer auf dem Web Summit auf, dem neuen Kontrakt für ein besseres Netz unter dem Hashtag #ForTheWeb beizutreten.

Wie ein solches besseres Netz aussehen kann, hatte Berners-Lee bereits vor einem Monat vorgestellt. Die von ihm mitgegründete Firma Inrupt hat die Plattform Solid gegründet, die jedermann vollständige Kontrolle über seine Daten geben soll.

With an ambitious decentralized platform, the father of the web hopes it’s game on for corporate tech giants like Facebook and Google.

The difference here is that, on Solid, all the information is under his control. Every bit of data he creates or adds on Solid exists within a Solid pod–which is an acronym for personal online data store. These pods are what give Solid users control over their applications and information on the web. Anyone using the platform will get a Solid identity and Solid pod. This is how people, Berners-Lee says, will take back the power of the web from corporations.
