The goal, he said, is to move toward “the web that I originally wanted.”

“Pods,” personal online data stores, are a key technical ingredient to achieve that goal. The idea is that each person could control his or her own data — websites visited, credit card purchases, workout routines, music streamed — in an individual data safe, typically a sliver of server space.

With an ambitious decentralized platform, the father of the web hopes it’s game on for corporate tech giants like Facebook and Google.

The difference here is that, on Solid, all the information is under his control. Every bit of data he creates or adds on Solid exists within a Solid pod–which is an acronym for personal online data store. These pods are what give Solid users control over their applications and information on the web. Anyone using the platform will get a Solid identity and Solid pod. This is how people, Berners-Lee says, will take back the power of the web from corporations.

Tim Berners-Lee ist nicht glücklich mit dem, was aus seiner Erfindung – dem WWW – geworden ist, und sieht es an einem kritischen Punkt angekommen. Die von Inrupt entwickelte Plattform Solid, hervorgegangen aus einem MIT-Forschungsprojekt, will uns allen vollständige Kontrolle über unsere Daten geben. Das bedeutet: "die Wahl, wo die Daten gespeichert werden, welche Personen und Gruppen auf einzelne Elemente zugreifen können und welche Apps man benutzt".
