Even those who are asymptomatic can still transmit COVID-19 to others, making it important to identify and isolate them until they are no longer contagious.
Now, researchers reporting in ACS Nano ("Noninvasive and Point-of-Care Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS)-Based Breathalyzer for Mass Screening of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) under 5 min") have developed a prototype “breathalyzer” that can sensitively and accurately diagnose COVID-19, even in asymptomatic individuals, in less than 5 minutes.

Biomedical engineering researchers have developed a nanotechnology anti-cancer drug delivery method that essentially smuggles the drug into a cancer cell before triggering its release ("Enhanced Anticancer Efficacy by ATP-Mediated Liposomal Drug Delivery"). The method can be likened to keeping a cancer-killing bomb and its detonator separate until they are inside a cancer cell, where they then combine to destroy the cell.

Die Wissenschaftler haben zwei verschiedene Typen von Sensoren entwickelt, die sie in der Fachzeitschrift Nature vorstellen: Einer wird für eine Kurzzeitbeobachtung in die Blutbahn injiziert. Er ist mit dem biokompatiblen Polymer Polyethylenglycol (PEG) ausgestattet, das eine Klumpenbildung verhindert. So kann der Sensor durch die Lunge und das Herz zirkulieren, ohne dort Schäden anzurichten.

Einem internationalen Forscherteam mit Beteiligung des Max-Planck-Instituts für Polymerforschung ist es gelungen, Nanotransistoren aus nur wenigen Atomen breiten Graphenbändern zu produzieren.


Forschung für die Nanotechnologie der Zukunft: Nur wenige Atome breite Graphenbänder, sogenannte Graphen-Nanoribbons, haben spezielle elektrische Eigenschaften, die sie zu viel versprechenden Kandidaten für die Nanoelektronik der Zukunft machen: Während Graphen – eine nur ein Atom dünne, bienenwabenförmige Kohlenstoffschicht – ein leitendes Material ist, kann es in Form von Nanobändern zum Halbleiter werden.

 

Das bedeutet, es hat eine genügend große Energie- oder Bandlücke, in der keine elektronischen Zustände möglich sind: Dadurch lässt es sich an- und abschalten – und wird so möglicherweise zu einem zentralen Bestandteil von Nanotransistoren.

(Nanowerk News) Magnetic nanoparticles can open the blood-brain barrier and deliver molecules directly to the brain, say researchers from the University of Montreal, Polytechnique Montréal, and CHU Sainte-Justine ("Remote control of the permeability of the blood–brain barrier by magnetic heating of nanoparticles: A proof of concept for brain drug delivery"). This barrier runs inside almost all vessels in the brain and protects it from elements circulating in the blood that may be toxic to the brain.


The research is important as currently 98% of therapeutic molecules are also unable to cross the blood-brain barrier.
“The barrier is temporary opened at a desired location for approximately 2 hours by a small elevation of the temperature generated by the nanoparticles when exposed to a radio-frequency field,” explained first author and co-inventor Seyed Nasrollah Tabatabaei. “Our tests revealed that this technique is not associated with any inflammation of the brain.

Nanotechnology researchers produce new anti-cancer drug from turmeric


The compound is made of curcumin found in the extract of turmeric, and has desirable physical and chemical stability and prevents the proliferation of cancer cells.In this drug, curcumin with high efficiency (approximately 87%) was loaded in the polymeric nanocarrier, and it created a spherical structure with the size of 140 nm.

The drug has high physical and chemical stability. The drug was used successfully in laboratory conditions in the treatment of a type of aggressive tumor in the central nervous system, called glioblastoma (GBM).

Nanowire field-effect sensors show significant advantages of real-time, label-free and highly sensitive detection of a wide range of analytes in liquid phase, including proteins, nucleic acids, small molecules, and viruses in single-element or multiplexed formats. Motivated by the unique features of these sensors and the ease to integrate them in the currently available VLSI technology, researchers used molecularly modified silicon nanowire FETs to detect volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are associated with environmental pollution, quality control, explosive materials, or various diseases.

Brain-penetrating nanoparticle attacks deadly tumors

 

(Nanowerk News) Scientists have developed a new approach for treating a deadly brain cancer that strikes 15,000 in the United States annually and for which there is no effective long-term therapy. The researchers, from Yale and Johns Hopkins, have shown that the approach extends the lives of laboratory animals and are preparing to seek government approval for a human clinical trial.

 

“We wanted to make a system that would penetrate into the brain and deliver drugs to a greater volume of tissue,” said Mark Saltzman, a biomedical engineer at Yale and principal investigator of the research. “Drugs have to get to tumor cells in order to work, and they have to be the right drugs.
