WASHINGTON, Feb 13 (Reuters) - ChatGPT, a fast-growing artificial intelligence program, has drawn praise for its ability to write answers quickly to a wide range of queries, and attracted U.S. lawmakers' attention with questions about its impact on national security and education.

ChatGPT was estimated to have reached 100 million monthly active users just two months after launch, making it the fastest-growing consumer application in history, and a growing target for regulation.

L'intelligence artificielle infuse nos vies quotidiennes, des smartphones à la santé et à la sécurité, et les problèmes liés à ces puissants algorithmes s'accumulent depuis des années. Mais différents pays démocratiques veulent désormais les encadrer.

L'Union européenne pourrait voter l'année prochaine la loi "AI act", sur l'intelligence artificielle (IA), censée encourager l'innovation et éviter les dérives.

Le projet d'une centaine de pages interdit les systèmes "utilisés pour manipuler le comportement, les opinions ou les décisions" des citoyens.

The US Navy has announced that it is moving ahead with plans to deploy the first ever combat laser weapon. Late this summer, USS Ponce -- a fairly unextraordinary amphibious ship -- will be outfitted with the Laser Weapon System (LaWS).

LaWS will be put through some at-sea testing in the Persian (Arabian) Gulf, after which it will be capable of shooting down drones or disabling small attack boats (including suicide bombing missions) at an energy cost of just $1 per shot. Rather fittingly for a futuristic weapons system, LaWS will be fired using a 'video game-like controller.'
