Meta’s new AI image generator was trained on 1.1 billion Instagram and Facebook photos

Meta’s new AI image generator was trained on 1.1 billion Instagram and Facebook photos | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

Meta’s new AI image generator was trained on 1.1 billion Instagram and Facebook photos
"Imagine with Meta AI" turns prompts into images, trained using public Facebook data.
BENJ EDWARDS - 12/6/2023, 10:52 PM

On Wednesday, Meta released a free standalone AI image generator website, "Imagine with Meta AI," based on its Emu image synthesis model. Meta used 1.1 billion publicly visible Facebook and Instagram images to train the AI model, which can render a novel image from a written prompt. Previously, Meta's version of this technology—using the same data—was only available in messaging and social networking apps such as Instagram.

If you're on Facebook or Instagram, it's quite possible a picture of you (or that you took) helped train Emu. In a way, the old saying, "If you're not paying for it, you are the product" has taken on a whole new meaning. Although, as of 2016, Instagram users uploaded over 95 million photos a day, so the dataset Meta used to train its AI model was a small subset of its overall photo library.

IBM, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon form enormous AI partnership | #ArtificialIntelligence

IBM, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon form enormous AI partnership | #ArtificialIntelligence | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

On Wednesday, the world learned of a new industry association called the Partnership on Artificial Intelligence, and it includes some of the biggest tech companies in the world. IBM, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and Amazon have all signed on as marquis members, though the group hopes to expand even further over time. The goal is to create a body that can provide a platform for discussions among stakeholders and work out best practices for the artificial intelligence industry. Not directly mentioned, but easily seen on the horizon, is its place as the primary force lobbying for smarter legislation on AI and related future-tech issues.

Best practices can be boring or important, depending on the context, and in this case they are very, very important. Best practices could provide a framework for accurate safety testing, which will be important as researchers ask people to put more and more of their lives in the hands of AI and AI-driven robots. This sort of effort might also someday work toward a list of inherently dangerous and illegitimate actions or AI “thought” processes. One of its core goals is to produce thought leadership on the ethics of AI development.

| Scoop.it

Meta filed a patent for hologram-like ‘3D conversations’

Meta filed a patent for hologram-like ‘3D conversations’ | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

Ever since Star Wars first showed space wizards talking to holograms, calling someone and chatting with their 3D simulacrum has become a staple of science fiction. But based on a patent application published in January, it sure looks like FacebookMeta is trying to make 3D conversations a reality right now — even if not quite the way George Lucas envisioned it.

With the disclaimer that many patents never end up becoming an actual product, the patent does hint at how Meta envisions the future of communication.

What’s the patent about?
Meta, then Facebook, filed a Patent Application in 2020 titled 3D Conversations in an Artificial Reality Environment. Specifically, the application outlines a pipeline for capturing and transmitting 3D representations of callers, “allowing conversation participants to appear as if face-to-face.”

Google, Facebook, and Microsoft Are Remaking Themselves Around AI | #ArtificialIntelligence

Google, Facebook, and Microsoft Are Remaking Themselves Around AI | #ArtificialIntelligence | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

FEI-FEI LI IS a big deal in the world of AI. As the director of the Artificial Intelligence and Vision labs at Stanford University, she oversaw the creation of ImageNet, a vast database of images designed to accelerate the development of AI that can “see.” And, well, it worked, helping to drive the creation of deep learning systems that can recognize objects, animals, people, and even entire scenes in photos—technology that has become commonplace on the world’s biggest photo-sharing sites. Now, Fei-Fei will help run a brand new AI group inside Google, a move that reflects just how aggressively the world’s biggest tech companies are remaking themselves around this breed of artificial intelligence.

Facebook Manages to Squeeze an AI Into Its Mobile App
Alongside a former Stanford researcher—Jia Li, who more recently ran research for the social networking service Snapchat—the China-born Fei-Fei will lead a team inside Google’s cloud computing operation, building online services that any coder or company can use to build their own AI. This new Cloud Machine Learning Group is the latest example of AI not only re-shaping the technology that Google uses, but also changing how the company organizes and operates its business.
