Epson launches $499 smart glasses using Android, Windows compute | #AugmentedReality #AR  | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

Epson is launching a new version of its Moverio smart glasses--the Moverio BT-30C--with a $499 price point and setup that's likely to make them more appealing for corporations.

I know you're thinking "smart glasses again?!?" But this time may be different. Yes, Google Glass resulted in glassholes and a lack of legitimate use cases. But like augmented reality devices like Microsoft's HoloLens, there are real returns and use cases for smart glasses. Those uses revolve around training, drones, maintenance, entertainment and productivity.

The other thing to note is that Epson has been in the smart glasses game since 2011 and has been tweaking their Moverio lineup ever since. Toss in the reality that Epson has a real sales channel and now has solved some of its compute problems with Android smartphone and Windows laptop tethering and smart glasses could be a more viable augmented reality vehicle.

"The idea is that the smart glasses now create a multi-screen canvas, said Eric Mizufuka, product manager for augmented reality at Epson America.

Apple buys startup focused on lenses for AR glasses | #Aquisitions #Akonia | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

Reuters - Apple Inc has acquired a startup focused on making lenses for augmented reality glasses, the company confirmed on Wednesday, a signal Apple has ambitions to make a wearable device that would superimpose digital information on the real world.

The Apple logo is seen on a computer screen in this illustration photo taken in Bordeaux, France, February 1, 2017. REUTERS/Regis Duvignau/File Photo
Apple confirmed it acquired Longmont, Colorado-based Akonia Holographics. “Apple buys smaller companies from time to time, and we generally don’t discuss our purpose or plans,” the iPhone maker said in a statement.

Akonia could not immediately be reached for comment. The company was founded in 2012 by a group of holography scientists and had originally focused on holographic data storage before shifting its efforts to creating displays for augmented reality glasses, according to its website.

In augmented reality, digital information is overlaid on the real world as in the popular game Pokemon Go. Mobile phones use their camera system to do this on the phone’s screen, but major technology firms are racing to create glasses that will show digital information on transparent lenses.

Akonia said its display technology allows for “thin, transparent smart glass lenses that display vibrant, full-color, wide field-of-view images.” The firm has a portfolio of more than 200 patents related to holographic systems and materials, according to its website.

Windows Mixed Reality headsets will bring virtual reality to the masses later this year | #Ar #VR #MR

Since Microsoft Hololens’ launch more than two years ago, developers, partners and customers have embraced mixed reality, pushing the boundaries of technology while creating incredibly immersive and innovative experiences.

In a push to bring the power of Mixed Reality headsets to the masses, Microsoft has since partnered with the world’s largest PC manufacturers to create a series of more affordable headsets, which will arrive later this year.

Unlike existing high-end VR headsets which require external cameras for tracking, Windows Mixed Reality headsets have built-in cameras and sensors to track your physical position and hand-held controllers.

The end result is a headset which requires less hassle setting up, allowing users to easily make use of them anywhere, without the need to set up an area each time they want to play.

Microsoft's HoloLens: How these surgeons can now voyage around patients' organs | #Research #STEAM #AR #3D | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it
Researchers in Oslo have been working for years on turning 2D medical imagery into 3D but now they've used Microsoft's HoloLens to give surgeons more precision in operations.

The project by researchers at the Intervention Centre at Oslo University Hospital, working with developers at IT consultancy Sopra Steria, was recently awarded a Microsoft Health Innovation Award.

The data that the 3D models use comes from the hospital's various image-generating scanning CT and MR machines. These scanners provide detailed views of the human body, but present these images in the form of two-dimensional picture 'slices'.

When planning surgical procedures, the surgeons have to flip back and forth through a potentially large number of these slices, when using them directly from the scanning machines.

The Intervention Centre has been working on combining data from such 2D slices into a 3D model for more than a decade. Using a method called picture segmentation, the relevant sections are extracted from the scans and used to form a 3D model of, for instance, a liver with a tumor and its surrounding blood vessels.

NASA is building the next Mars rover in mixed reality | #AR #RA  | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

I poked my head inside NASA's latest Mars rover. During a mixed-reality demonstration at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena...

The ability to investigate the design of NASA's latest spacecraft, which is being engineered for the next mission to Mars in 2020, makes ProtoSpace a unique use for Microsoft's augmented-reality headset. The project enables JPL designers and engineers to not only visualize their designs as virtual 3-D objects, but also pinpoint potential problems that could affect space missions along the way.

Back in Pasadena, ProtoSpace is engaging engineers in a new kind of interaction with their spacecraft design. The vehicle, which is essentially a Computer Assisted Design (CAD) model in holographic form, appears as a floating, dynamic animation. You can do things like slip your arm through the brightly colored parts and bolts that are projected in front of you. But what the rover lacks in definition it makes up for in presence. Unlike the CAD design on a flat computer screen, mixed-reality technology brings a full-scale replica of the rover to life inside a room.

Google is letting some users test its AR navigation feature for Google Maps | #AugmentedReality | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

At last year’s I/O developer’s conference, Google showed off a new augmented reality feature for Google Maps, which would provide people with directions from your phone’s camera in realtime. As my colleague Chaim Gartenberg noted, it’s a bit like what was promised with Google Glass, but without the headset. The Wall Street Journal’s David Pierce got to try out an early version of the feature.

He says that while it “isn’t likely to be your primary turn-by-turn option, it’s a huge step in the right direction for Google Maps.” He described how the feature worked — the app picks up a person’s location via GPS, and then uses Street View data to narrow it down to your exact location. Once his location was pinned down, it displayed big arrows and directions in his screen. “It was as if Maps had drawn my directions onto the real world, though nobody else could see them.”

Apple is working on wearable digital glasses that would connect wirelessly to the iPhone and show content in the wearer’s field of vision, according to a news report.

The iPhone maker has indicated previously its interest in augmented reality. Unlike the simulated world of virtual reality, AR supplements with images and information the user’s normal view of the world.

“We are high on AR for the long run. We think there are great things for customers and a great commercial opportunity,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in an earnings call in July, talking about the need for Apple’s devices to work with other developers’ products, such as the successful Pokémon Go game.

The company has also hired VR and AR experts and made some acquisitions that could help it meet its AR goals. Apple has discussed the glasses project with potential suppliers, reported Bloomberg on Monday, citing people familiar with those discussions.
