When NASA's Mars 2020 rover lands on the Red Planet in February 2021, it will touch down in Jezero Crater, the site of a lake that existed 3.5 billion years ago. The next generation rover will build on the goals of previous robotic explorers by collecting the first samples of Mars, which would be returned to Earth at a later date.
"On the science side, we're really thinking about new discoveries we can make on the surface and how [that] will inform what we learn when we get the samples back," said Katie Morgan Stack, deputy project scientist for the rover at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. "Our job is to find the best samples, collect and store them, and place them on the surface."

Israeli scientists say a new study has shown that a small molecule called PJ34 has triggered the self-destruction of human pancreatic cancer cells in mice. According to the research, published in the peer-reviewed open-access biomedical journal Oncotarget, the administration of the molecule reduced the number of cancer cells in developed tumors by up to 90 percent in 30 days.
The study was led by Professor Malka Cohen-Armon and her team at Tel Aviv University’s Sackler Faculty of Medicine, in collaboration with Dr. Talia Golan and her team at the Cancer Research Center at Sheba Medical Center, and conducted with transplantations of human pancreatic cancer cells into immunocompromised mice, or xenografts. Dampfer von E-Zigaretten haben ein erhöhtes Risiko für chronische Lungenkrankheiten wie COPD, Asthma und Bronchitis. The Universe is expanding, and goes on for farther than even our most powerful telescopes can see. The part of it that we can see, scientists have long concluded, is indistinguishable from being perfectly spatially flat. At least, that's been the conventional wisdom for a long time. But a couple of weeks ago, a new paper (full, free version here) used the latest data from the Planck satellite to draw the opposite conclusion: perhaps the Universe isn't flat at all, but curved with a particular, closed geometry. E-cigarettes may be more harmful to a smoker’s heart than traditional tobacco cigarettes. That’s the finding of new research from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, presented today (Nov. 11) at an American Heart Association scientific conference.
The Cedars-Sinai team compared the hearts of 10 non-smokers to the hearts of 10 tobacco smokers and 10 e-cigarette smokers. All the people in the study were younger than 40, and all were otherwise healthy. In response to a mild bout of exercise, measures of blood flow increased in the hearts of the non-smokers. Among the tobacco smokers, this increase was blunted. But among the e-cigarette smokers, there was no increase at all. “This suggests e-cigarettes cause an abnormality that impedes blood flow regulation in the heart,” says Dr. Florian Rader, coauthor of the study and a heart specialist at Cedars-Sinai’s Smidt Heart Institute. Der US-Suchmaschinen-Gigant Google erweitert seine Geschäftsfelder: Die Kalifornier übernehmen die bekannte Firma Fitbit, Hersteller von sogenannten Fitness-Trackern, für 2,1 Milliarden Dollar. Mit dem Deal tritt Google auch in neuerliche Konkurrenz zu Apple und Huawei.
Fitbit stellt sogenannte „Fitness Tracker“ her, mit denen die Kunden ihre Trainingseinheiten aufzeichnen und messen können. Die Geräte werden wie ein Armband getragen. Die einfacheren Geräte sind im Prinzip normale Schrittzähler, die teureren Modelle können auch die Herzfrequenz oder die Qualität des Schlafes messen.
Der Internet-Riese zahlt 7,35 Dollar pro Aktie und Fitbit wird damit insgesamt mit gut zwei Milliarden Dollar bewertet, wie die Unternehmen am Freitag mitteilten. An die Börse ging Fitbit im Jahr 2015 noch mit einem Ausgabepreis von 20 Dollar je Aktie – zwischenzeitlich war der Kurs aber bis an die Marke von drei Dollar gefallen. Nach Bekanntgabe der Übernahme ging die Fitbit-Aktie am Freitag steil nach oben.
Konkurrenz durch Apple und Huawei
Mit den Ressourcen und der Plattform von Google werde Fitbit schnellen Innovationen herausbringen können, erklärte Mitgründer und Chef James Park. Die Daten von Fitbit würden nicht für die Platzierung von Google-Anzeigen verwendet, hieß es. Zugleich gab es kein Versprechen, Daten getrennt zu lagern, wie einst bei der Übernahme des Smarthome-Spezialisten Nest durch Google. Inzwischen wurde Nest komplett in die Hardware-Sparte von Google einverleibt.
Das Geschäft von Fitbit lief zuletzt holperig, weil die Pionier von zwei Seiten in die Zange genommen wurde. Im lukrativeren Markt der Computer-Uhren konnte die Firma aus San Francisco nicht mit der Apple Watch mithalten. Bei günstigen Fitness-Bändern, die etwa Schritte und verbrauchte Kalorien zählen, graben chinesische Rivalen wie Xiaomi und Huawei dem Branchenpionier Fitbit das Wasser ab. Im zweiten Quartal verbuchte Fitbit einen Verlust von knapp 36 Millionen Dollar bei Umsätzen von 313,6 Millionen Dollar.
Google entwickelt das speziell auf Computer-Uhren ausgerichtete Betriebssystem Wear OS. Es ist vom Android-System abgeleitet, das den Smartphone-Markt dominiert. Bei Computer-Uhren konnte das Android-Lager aber bisher nicht die Apple Watch einholen, obwohl Geräte verschiedener Hersteller auf dem Markt sind. Schon Anfang der Woche hatte es Berichte über ein Kaufangebot von Google für Fitbit gegeben.

La cataracte est un trouble de la vision qui survient lorsque le cristallin, cette petite lentille ovale située derrière la pupille, perd de sa transparence.
Lorsque le cristallin s’opacifie, les rayons lumineux parviennent moins bien à la rétine, ce qui explique que la vision s’embrouille. Le mot cataracte a été choisi pour décrire cette impression de regarder à travers une chute d’eau (du latin cataracta, qui signifie chute d’eau). Le cristallin joue le même rôle que la lentille de l’objectif d’un appareil photographique : faire la mise au point de l’image selon la distance de l’objet observé. Le cristallin y parvient en se déformant pour changer sa courbure. Déroulement de la chirurgie - Une incision d’environ 2 mm est pratiquée à travers la cornée et une ouverture est créée dans l’enveloppe du cristallin.
- Une sonde à ultrasons est ensuite insérée dans le cristallin. Les ultrasons pulvérisent les protéines du cristallin et l’amollissent, ce qui permet de le retirer plus facilement. Cette étape est appelée « phacoémulsification ».
- Chez la plupart des personnes, le cristallin est alors remplacé par une lentille artificielle, introduite dans l’enveloppe du cristallin. La lentille introduite est choisie en fonction du patient. Selon le cas, la lentille peut corriger la myopie, l’hypermétropie, l’astigmatisme et la presbytie.
Deux types de lentilles artificielles - Les lentilles rigides, faites en polyméthylmétacrylate (PMMA). Elles sont utilisées depuis les années 1950, mais n’ont subi aucune innovation depuis les années 1990. Elles sont fiables, mais nécessitent une grande ouverture (de 5,5 mm) pour les introduire dans l’oeil. Elles peuvent corriger la myopie et l’hypermétropie. - Les lentilles souples, molles ou pliables, faites en acrylique ou en silicone. On peut les plier en 3, de sorte que l’incision dans l’oeil est 3 fois plus petite. Elles offrent une meilleure vision de nuit. Les cataractes risquent moins de se déclarer de nouveau (voir ci-dessous). Certaines lentilles molles permettent de corriger l’astigmatisme, la presbytie ou les 2 à la fois. In den USA hatten sich die Meldungen ungeklärter Lungenerkrankungen, die nach dem Konsum von E-Zigaretten auftreten, in den vergangenen Wochen gehäuft. Die Symptome reichten von Atembeschwerden, Atemnot und Brustschmerzen bis hin zu Fällen von Magen-Darm-Erkrankungen mit Erbrechen und Durchfall. Microsoft has acquired cloud-migration provider Movere for an undisclosed amount. Movere, formerly known as Unified Logic, was founded in 2008 and is based in Bellevue, Wash.
According to Microsoft's September 4 blog post about the acquisition, Movere will fit in with Microsoft's strategy to migrate existing applications and infrastructure to Azure. The company's discovery and assessment capabilities "will complement Azure Migrate and our integrated partner solutions, making migration an easier process for our customers," said Jeremy Winter, partner director of Azure Management, in that blog post.
Movere officials describe the company as a software as a service (SaaS) platform "that increases business intelligence by accurately presenting entire IT environments within a single day,providing enterprises with the confidence they need to have visibility and control of their environments regardless of platform, application or geography as organizations grow, change and digitally optimize." (Nanowerk News) After years of tackling numerous design and manufacturing challenges, MIT researchers have built a modern microprocessor from carbon nanotube transistors, which are widely seen as a faster, greener alternative to their traditional silicon counterparts.
The microprocessor, described in the journal Nature ("Modern microprocessor built from complementary carbon nanotube transistors"), can be built using traditional silicon-chip fabrication processes, representing a major step toward making carbon nanotube microprocessors more practical.

En Californie, une «salle blanche» stérile pour la planète rouge
Le rover Mars 2020 sera bientôt en route pour la planète rouge, mais c'est dans une «salle blanche» de Californie qu'il a vu le jour, comme tous ses prédécesseurs et déjà avant eux les sondes Voyager, Galileo ou Cassini qui ont sillonné notre système solaire. Cette «salle blanche» est l'une des deux pièces ultra-stériles nichées sur le site d'assemblage des véhicules spatiaux du JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) à Pasadena, dans la banlieue de Los Angeles. Elle était vendredi exceptionnellement ouverte à la presse pour présenter le rover.
Le robot a effectué la semaine dernière ses premiers tours de roue dans la grande salle stérile du Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) de Pasadena, près de Los Angeles, où il a vu le jour. Il doit quitter la Terre en juillet 2020 depuis Cap Canaveral (Floride) pour se poser sur Mars en février 2021.
«Il est conçu pour chercher des signes de vie, donc il emporte un grand nombre d'instruments différents qui vont nous aider à comprendre le contexte géologique et chimique à la surface de Mars, et aussi collecter des échantillons dans le but de pouvoir un jour les rapporter sur Terre», résume pour l'AFP Matt Wallace, responsable adjoint de la mission Mars 2020.

Microsoft Japan has announced the results of its 4-day work week trial, and it will shock no-one to know the experiment was hugely popular with the company's employees. What may surprise people is that the shortened week increased productivity by almost 40 percent — thanks in part to shorter, more efficient meetings.
This August, Microsoft Japan trialed a 4-day work week for its entire workforce, calling the project the "Work-Life Choice Challenge Summer 2019". Approximately 2300 employees were given 5 Fridays off, with no reduction in salary and no days taken out of their annual leave.
Further, The Mainichi reported that Microsoft Japan also planned to subsidise employees' family vacations or further education by up to ¥100,000.
"Work a short time, rest well and learn a lot. It's necessary to have an environment that allows you to feel your purpose in life and make a greater impact at work," said Microsoft Japan president and CEO Takuya Hirano. "I want employees to think about and experience how they can achieve the same results with 20 percent less working time." Microsoft is acquiring Semmle, a San Francisco-based code-analysis platform vendor, for an undisclosed amount. Microsoft plans to make Semmle part of its GitHub business, the two companies said on September 18.
Semmle was founded in 2006, with the idea that querying source code should work like any other type of data. Since then, its products have been used by Google, Uber, NASA and Microsoft and "many open source projects" in the name of improving security, according to a blog post by Semmle.
Semmle lists as its products QL, which provides automated variant analysis to help product security teams find zero-days and variants of critical vulnerabilities; and LGTM, which provides continuous security analysis for developers. (CNN) US health officials announced Friday that they are now aware of at least 450 possible cases of severe lung disease that could be caused by vaping.
These cases, which have occurred in 33 states and one jurisdiction, include some cases that are still under investigation by state health officials.
A third confirmed death was also revealed in Indiana, and a fourth remains under investigation as a possible case. Two other deaths -- one in Illinois and one in Oregon -- had been previously reported.
One week ago, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced it was aware of at least 215 cases in 25 states, although that number did not include additional cases still under investigation. Wie der erste ist auch der neue Aptera ein Dreirad, das ein wenig an ein Flugzeug ohne Flügel erinnert. In der stromlinienförmigen Kabine ist Platz für zwei Personen. Angetrieben sind die beiden vorderen Räder, in denen jeweils ein Radnabenmotor sitzt. Eine Version mit Allradantrieb ist für später geplant. Die Motoren sollen von einem osteuropäischen Hersteller kommen und haben eine Leistung von jeweils 50 kW.
Aptera will das Fahrzeug mit mehreren Akkuvarianten auf den Markt bringen, von 40 bis 100 Kilowattstunden (kWh) Kapazität. Die 1.600 Kilometer Reichweite beziehen sich auf den größten Akku. Mit dem 60-kWh-Akku soll das Fahrzeug lediglich 800 kg wiegen. Zum Vergleich: Der Nissan Leaf+ mit einem 62-kWh-Akku ist fast doppelt so schwer.
Wegen des geringen Gewichts soll das Auto eine sehr hohe Effizienz haben: Laut den Entwicklern wird der Verbrauch bei 6,2 kWh pro 100 km liegen. Aktuell gilt Teslas Model 3 mit 15,5 kWh pro 100 km als das sparsamste Elektroauto.
Aptera sucht derzeit über eine Crowdfunding-Kampagne nach Investoren - an der ersten Auflage des Unternehmens hatte sich Google beteiligt. Das Unternehmen brauche 2,5 Millionen US-Dollar, um drei Prototypen zu bauen, sagten die Gründer dem US-Wissenschaftsmagazin IEEE Spectrum.
