Khronos Establishes Exploratory Group for 3D Commerce Standards and Guidelines | Business Wire

Khronos Establishes Exploratory Group for 3D Commerce Standards and Guidelines | Business Wire | 4D Pipeline Visualizing Reality Blog - trends & breaking news in 3D Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and eXtended Reality. | Scoop.it
The Khronos 3D Commerce Exploratory Group looks at standards and guidelines for the production and distribution of real-time 3D products.
Jed Fisher's insight:

This is a great initiative that 4D Pipeline and many of our customers are part of (Dassault Systems, Microsoft, Unity, IKEA, and others).

From: Kronos -

With the growth and adoption of mobile, Web and immersive platforms, 3D is poised to grow as a new shopping medium that product manufacturers, retailers, marketing and advertising platforms use to showcase virtual products for end-users to better understand a product online prior to purchasing, and to build brand loyalty after purchase.

Retailers have been experimenting with 3D product representations on the Web, and in Virtual and Augmented Reality (together termed ‘XR’) applications, to enable users to view and interact with products and explore virtual showrooms. The results have been exciting, but thus far not actionable in a scalable, repeatable way. Key players in the industry are now exploring how to scale production and achieve broad distribution for interactive 3D content to represent their products virtually. This includes streamlining processes for creating real-time 3D representations of products, so they can be experienced realistically and consistently across all platforms and devices.

This initiative would aim to create standard specifications and guidelines to help align retailers and manufacturers seeking to create virtual 3D products, technology providers building tools to produce 3D content, and technology platforms seeking to distribute and display virtual products with optimized workflows throughout the industry to minimize production and distribution costs.

Ikea found 14% of customers have bought wrong sized furniture for their rooms - how VR and AR help retail

Ikea found 14% of customers have bought wrong sized furniture for their rooms - how VR and AR help retail | 4D Pipeline Visualizing Reality Blog - trends & breaking news in 3D Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and eXtended Reality. | Scoop.it

Today, top brands like, Lego, Rayban, BMW, North Face and Marriott Hotel are testing the waters with augmented and virtual reality.

Jed Fisher's insight:

Ikea found 14% of customers have bought wrong sized furniture for their rooms  - fantastic data point and again a great example to why AR and Mixed Reality is going to continue to get even more popular. I still see AR/Mixed-Reality over taking VR. Using 3D scanners that will soon be part of our phones and mixed reality headsets like Hololens allows another generation again of completely reimagined experiences.

THE BEACONS FAQ: It's Time To Set The Story Straight About Beacons And Apple's iBeacon System

THE BEACONS FAQ: It's Time To Set The Story Straight About Beacons And Apple's iBeacon System | 4D Pipeline Visualizing Reality Blog - trends & breaking news in 3D Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and eXtended Reality. | Scoop.it
Beacons are becoming the most rapidly adopted in-store technology since mobile card readers.
Jed Fisher's insight:

At 4D Pipeline we are increasingly doing more with iBeacons. This is a nice summary on what they are and what they can and cannot do. Like many things they have the potential to annoy/spam but if used intelligently by retailers (and others) they will be incredibly helpful to consumers.

iBeacon lets iPhones and iPads constantly scan for nearby Bluetooth devices. When it identifies a Bluetooth device, like a beacon, it can wake up an app on someone's phone — even if the app is not running. Developers can make their apps responsive to iBeacon by using Apple's Core Location APIs (application programming interfaces) in iOS.

Trends That Will Revolutionize The Retail Industry

Trends That Will Revolutionize The Retail Industry | 4D Pipeline Visualizing Reality Blog - trends & breaking news in 3D Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and eXtended Reality. | Scoop.it
In retail, innovation is the name of the game. Increasingly, retailers are staying ahead through unique in-store experiences that inspire shoppers through..
Jed Fisher's insight:

Good article.

For me social is obviously key and I'm glad they mention Oculus.

Two points i'd like to make in additional points:

1):

Where does fashion come from? From others whom we are influenced by. We see these people in person, via magazines and publications, on TV, and now via the internet. Increasing though - we play online in our virtual worlds. Games are only going to become more and more real and more personal.

So my question is - why should this be any different? If i see Danny in person or online in my Oculus VR game - why shouldnt Danny be looking cool? maybe wearing some branded sneakers or a cap?

Guess what - he will be soon!

2) For me - I buy everything online, my shoes, my sofa, my bike!

I buy online because of speed and the online experience (obviously i'm not a shopper). However most people dont yet. What's the number one reason people don't buy more products online?

We'll I've asked a LOT of people about this and the number one reason I've heard is - "I dont know if it's going to look like the real thing".

Thus for me - computer vision and realistic interactive 3D is critical to the shopping experience. I need to be able to see the product, move it around, "try it", look carefully at how it's made (build quality, materials, etc), and feel confident that I know what it's going to look like. 2D technologies dont do this. 3D can.

-

There are many more interesting discussion points, eg how do i know something will fit? how do i do a virtual "try on", etc.

Ping me if you'd like to talk more on this interesting topic. At 4D Pipeline, we help build compelling digital experiences using engaging and fun social interactions and the most cutting edge 3D graphics for a realistic and compelling product experience.
