Bentley Systems Embraces the Cloud

Bentley Systems Embraces the Cloud | 4D Pipeline Visualizing Reality Blog - trends & breaking news in 3D Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and eXtended Reality. | Scoop.it
Building Information Modelling (BIM) for Architecture, Engineering and Construction
Jed Fisher's insight:

It's Autodesk University Week! #AU2013 the big gather in Vegas to talk shop and have a little fun!

So to celebrate let's talk about Bentley Systems instead :-)

1.5 years many companies were saying “cloud’s not going to happen” and talking about a mobile product 5+ years away. No more excuses for this thinking. Cloud and mobile are here and increasingly changing the game.

Bentley, and other big players like Autodesk, Dassault, and Nemetschek is now realizing it needs to start embracing the cloud, mobile, and Apps. Big old clunky desktop products are thankfully dying a slow death.

They are discovering that Cloud and Mobile are not just buzzwords, they open up new business opportunities and improved customer workflows. Now, with their cloud/app future, they can better tap into SaaS, downstream Owners, uber “bim” models (Bentley’s ones are call i-models), cloud based simulation, bim access, Augmented Reality use for building information, reaching construction i.e. Apps for the field, and the easier to use user experiences.

Will be interesting to watch Bentley Systems progress over the coming months.

Bentley keeps pace; weathers 2012

Bentley keeps pace; weathers 2012 | 4D Pipeline Visualizing Reality Blog - trends & breaking news in 3D Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and eXtended Reality. | Scoop.it
The company announced $523 million in revenue for 2011. Bentley has also expanded its relationship with Siemens and announced new deal with Trimble.
Jed Fisher's insight:

Bentley+Trimble+Siemens+BIM = AEC force to compete with Autodesk.

but we still need to see a few more significant players go for it!

Very interesting to see that the large majority of Bentley Systems customers are on subscription programs. The company not only has insight into its revenue stream for the future, it also has a good understanding of the tools its users are working with most often.

Real-time Point Cloud Visualization

Real-time Point Cloud Visualization | 4D Pipeline Visualizing Reality Blog - trends & breaking news in 3D Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and eXtended Reality. | Scoop.it
Bentley Pointools View is for project reviewers, consultants, or clients who need to provide feedback on the point cloud model in progress or review the final model but they don’t have a fully working Bentley Pointools license.

Via Courtney Bradford, Mohammed Alqaq, Ray Howard
Jed Fisher's insight:

I had not come across Pointtools before. Point cloud visualization is increasingly relevant so it's nice to see this done well. Product looks fairly mature. Great way to compare Plan vs Built, etc.

I like the View version - at least allowing the data to be accessed downstream.

Only gripes - it is near impossible (IMHO) to find the prices of products out from Bentley. Also Windows only. And I think it only works with the Bentley file format - not sure if there is an open format.
