Sheila Packas insight:

This article provides vivid detail about the labor strife on the Iron Range. Women also walked the picket lines, and on a few occasions, were the target of abuse.  Some women in Hibbing, despite holding babies in their arms, were pushed to the ground by authorities.  One woman in Aurora was charged with property damage--cutting lines on a locomotive.

Helen Gurley Flynn, a union organizer for the Wobblies, arrived on the Iron Range in northern Minnesota to help the strikers in 1917.   She wrote in her autobiography, Rebel Girl: "All that summer the strike dragged out a dogged existence. We raced up and down the Range from one end to another in an old bakery truck, driven by a couple of young Italian strikers, who often forgot we were not bread and bounced us unmercilessly over the unpaved, rocky road. The deputies came to know the truck and took pot shots at us, so we had to stop using it, much to our relief. There were about fourteen towns from one end to another which we covered. Several times the strikers marched the length of the Range, holding meetings in each town.  On one occasion some towns shut off the drinking water while we were there."

Sheila Packas insight:

Several other sources state her name as Elizabeth Gurley Flynn.  She wrote an autobiography, Rebel Girl. She spent time on the Iron Range in 1916-17 as a union organizer for the IWW.
