University of San Francisco, First Year Seminar: MS 195: "Mashup: Media & Pop Culture in San Francisco" Fall 2018

As a final project, students created comic books/graphic novels, focusing on possible themes: "something I earned/experienced/found significant -- ... during my first semester at college/USF" or "... an idea or experience from this class."

A significant experience many chose to write about was a  "Digital Detox," where students did not use or go near electronic media for 24 hours.

The comics were created using ComicLife 3, from http://plasq.com

sfMediaProf's insight:

USF Media Studies grad Genny Hutchison spent hours in the late 1990s practically living in the USF Media Lab ... working on projects involving this new thang, Internet video.  Developing pioneer online comedy skits with Bill Allard of "Duck's Breath Mystery Theatre." Then an internship with "Nash Bridges" production on Treasure Island and around San Francisco. Then ... well, the rest is even more fun . . .

"My USF education opened my mind a lot and made me less fearful of new things... I try to make sure that the characters are fully realized human beings and not fall into stereotypical traps... I always ask myself, ‘would Professor Barker-Plumber be disappointed in me?’" —Gennifer Hutchison //We highly doubt it.

Dad, Mom, and the 1963 March on Washington

Dad, Mom, and the 1963 March on Washington | USF Events, Ideas, People | Scoop.it
sfMediaProf's insight:

Here's a picture of my father's button from when he attended the 1963 March on Washington, 50 years ago this week. It's been in a cigar box I keep of old political buttons.

I remember that day as a kid: doing yard work at our house in Northern Virginia outside DC, and my mother being very nervous that there might be trouble.

My folks had an "open housing" sign on the car, supporting the right of anyone to be able to buy a house anywhere they wanted, regardless of race or religion ... They exhibited by their lives Progressive, Catholic social justice teachings ... in action.

A reminder to me of why I appreciate the people, mission, and values of the University of San Francisco ...

Dia De los Muertos/Day of the Dead: USF Students' Stories about the Event (fall 2017 & 2018, First Year Seminar)

Dia De los Muertos/Day of the Dead: USF Students' Stories about the Event (fall 2017 & 2018, First Year Seminar) | USF Events, Ideas, People | Scoop.it
Dia De Los Muertos is NOT “Mexican Halloween”

Dia De Los Muertos is different. Rather than fearing death, people   celebrate it. The spirits are not scary, they are welcomed to roam among the living and come to their altar.

Halloween has its origins in Celtic pagan traditions, Dia De Los Muertos comes from the indigenous people of Mexico.
