We live in an age marked by the return of right-wing, anti-democratic ethno-nationalism, and by the rise of anti-intellectualism. So perhaps it shouldn’t be a surprise that the world’s oldest academic institution is facing dangerous criticism from the demagogic far right.

The University of Chicago is one of America’s great success stories, overtaking many older and richer institutions within just a few decades to become an internationally recognised research powerhouse. But its ability to bring the world’s best scholars to its campus is being hindered by unhelpful immigration policies, which could be easily fixed.

L'idéal universitaire est menacé, depuis un quart de siècle environ, par deux facteurs déterminants : l'utilitarisme à courte vue, d'un côté ; la démagogie racoleuse, de l'autre.

When we look back twenty years, the picture is mixed. Clearly, a rapid and fundamental shift in higher education practice has taken place, driven by technology adoption. Yet at the same time, nothing much has changed, and many edtech developments have failed to have significant impact. Perhaps the overall conclusion, then, is that edtech is not a game for the impatient.

Donald Trump’s disregard for science has never been much of a secret. His newly proposed federal budget for 2019 continues the assault on knowledge and reason. The proposed 2019 science budget includes cuts to a wide range of government-funded efforts, from disease prevention to climate-change research. This article examines the Administration’s poor track record with fact and truth.

Digital literacy is a hot topic these days, and we’ve previously written about the importance of it for today’s students and what teachers need to know about helping them use technology effectively to enhance modern communication. But although the need for digital literacy is clear, actually teaching and using technology in educational settings can still be much improved.

If enacted by the Alabama House of Representatives, Bill 258 would allow teachers to present “the theory of creation as presented in the Bible” in any class discussing evolution. Doing so would afford students the opportunity to choose which understanding of Earth’s natural history they wish to accept: evolutionary theory or creationist theology. Moreover, the bill would ensure that students accepting creationism instead of evolution would not be penalized for answering exam questions in their science courses in a way that reflects their preference for creationist explanations, “provided the response is correct according to the instruction received.”

Open-access journal articles have been found, to some extent, to be downloaded and cited more than non-OA articles. But could the same be true for books? Carrie Calder reports on recent research into how open access affects the usage of scholarly books, including the findings that OA books are, on average, downloaded seven times more, cited 50% more, and mentioned online ten times more. A number of accompanying interviews reveal that authors are choosing open access routes to publish their books not only because of wider dissemination and easier access but also for ethical reasons.
