On January 23, 2019 ACUUS met in the HNTB offices at the Empire State Building for its North America Management Meeting.... 

A major emphasis was placed on setting up Youth Group Americas ....  This group will support the World Cities Day youth forum activities and collaborate with UCA Youth Committee for this major event to be held in Shanghai on 1st - 3rd November where ACUUS would be represented with its forum.

In the 2000s, London’s government asked artist Mark Wallinger to make an art installation commemorating the tube’s 150th anniversary. Wallinger chose to create a labyrinth for each of the city’s 270 underground stations, with each labyrinth embodying a unique geometric design and meaning.

Bangkok battle over land a sign of pressure Asian cities face - Thailand

Some cities are adopting a more unusual approach to growing demand for diminishing space. This year Singapore is set to unveil an Underground Master Plan. With some 5.6 million people in an area three-fifths the size of New York City - and with the population estimated to grow to 6.9 million by 2030 - the island nation is fast running out of space.... the city is going underground. It has already moved some infrastructure and utilities below ground, including train lines, retail, pedestrian walkways, a five-lane highway and air-conditioning cooling pipes. It also stores fuel and ammunition underground....

The Washington State Department of Transportation officially opened the SR 99 tunnel in Seattle — designed by HNTB Corporation (an ACUUS member) — with a series of special events last week. The project is part of the Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement program, one of the largest infrastructure projects in the United States....“The tunnel and underground team at HNTB is extremely proud of the work done on the SR 99 tunnel,” said Sanja Zlatanic, PE, HNTB chair national tunnel practice, senior vice president and HNTB Fellow (and Secretary General of ACUUS). “The tunnel's innovative design solution benefitted from significant developments in the mechanized tunneling industry over the past two decades. I am sure it would be used as a cornerstone for future advancements and creative tunneling solutions beneath densely populated cities across the nation and worldwide. ...”

The money will go toward building or updating connected infrastructure, including bike paths, sewage systems and water lines..... Excavation work on the métro line will allow the city to access its underground infrastructure in need of repairs or rebuilding. The métro extension is scheduled to be open for passengers in the summer of 2026.

Two Chinese scientists...won China's top science award on Tuesday at the National Science and Technology Award Conference held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing..... CAE academician Qian Qihu was honored for his outstanding contributions to China's underground protective infrastructure.....Qian has spent over 60 years studying protection engineering....underground. "The Great Wall used to resist invasions. Now we are talking about the underground Great Wall, not above the ground, but underneath," he explained. If the ground structures are destroyed, the underground "cities" can provide shelter and store the basic supplies needed for survival.

A two-mile double-decker highway tunnel opens there Monday, replacing an elevated highway along the sound that’s considered an eyesore....Eight acres of new public parks, with a landscaped promenade and space for cycling and recreation, will emerge along 26 blocks from what is now the highway’s shadows.... It is the longest road tunnel in the contiguous United States, with the second-widest diameter in the world — the widest is in Shanghai. The tunnel will carry traffic along two lanes in each direction on two levels, with a posted speed limit of 45 miles per hour.

A unique new art museum has opened in the Swiss Alps, built into an underground space that was once home to a 12th century monastery and brewery....The interior of Muzeum Susch is itself a work of art, and has been impressing keen visitors with its unique charm. Pieces of natural mountain rock can be seen exposed throughout, while a naturally-occurring water source has even been left to flow through it. The museum comprises of three buildings that are interconnected, and includes a restaurant. The project required over one year of excavation that saw 9000 tonnes of rock being shifted.

Le projet est estimé à 150 millions d'euros....Le métro relierait la commune de Porta (Pyrénées-Orientales), en Cerdagne française, au village du Pas-de-la-Case, en Andorre, en 11 minutes sur une distance de 7 kilomètres, avec un dénivelé total de 580 mètres. L'arrivée serait prévue, comme pour un métro traditionnel, en sous-sol, au cœur du village du Pas-de-la-Case.
