One-in-five adults who use the internet said they had experienced cyber fraud or computer misuse, according to a new report.

The latest Scottish Crime and Justice Survey said most victims reported no impact on them but they changed their online behaviours as a result.

Scottish Liberal Democrat Liam McArthur MSP has today said that while Scotland continues to experience low levels of crime overall, action will be required to tackle stalking, harassment and fraud.

The latest edition of the Scottish crime and justice survey published today showed that:

11.1% of adults experienced at least one type of stalking and harassment.
One-in-five adults who use the internet said they had experienced one or more types of cyber fraud and computer misuse
56% of adults said the police in their local area do an excellent or good job, down from 61% in 2012/13 (when the question was first asked).

A SPECIALIST charity that helps victims of stalking is to receive Scottish Government funding for the first time to allow it to deal with cases which are becoming increasingly complex and traumatic.

The Scottish Crime and Justice survey 2017-18 reported that in 2016-17 and 2017-18, a combined 11.1% of adults experienced at least one type of stalking and harassment in the previous year.

Figures show that the number of incidents reported to Police Scotland have risen across Perth and Kinross, Dundee and Angus.

Despite showing a two per cent decrease in the number of reports for 2017/2018, Fife still recorded the highest number with an average of 75.5 incidents a day.

THE number of crimes committed in Scotland has almost halved in the past decade, according to the Scottish Government’s annual survey.

The Scottish Crime and Justice Survey for 2018/19, which includes crimes not reported to the police, found the volume of offences had declined by 45 per cent since 2008/09.

EIGHT leading experts in data and social inequalities, have urged MSPs to ensure the question on sex in the next Census is answered according to people's legal sex, and not according to how they identify their gender.
The group, who hold senior academic positions at Glasgow, Heriot Watt and Edinburgh universities, have told Holyrood's Culture committee they are concerned with proposed changes to the question on sex, claiming it may reduce the ability of statisticians using Census data to "capture sex-based discrimination and disadvantage".

Justice Secretary Humza Yousaf has pledged to tackle “persistent violence” after it was revealed more than half of all violent crime in Scotland is suffered by repeat victims.

Repeat victims experienced an average of three violent crimes, the 2018-19 Scottish Crime and Justice Survey found, accounting for 59 per centof all the violent offences during that period.


Across Scotland, fewer than one in every 100 adults was a victim of more than one violent crime, while one in 1,000 experienced five or more incidents, according to the Scottish Government’s study.
