Despite the slowdown in economic growth, European outbound travel has grown by 3%. Globally, United Kingdom is one of the top five spenders on outbound tourism. Outbound travel is increasing steadily in the United Kingdom along with domestic and inbound tourism. According to the Office for National Statistics of UK, residents of the United Kingdom made 70.4 million outbound trips in 2016, which is a 7% increase compared to 2015. Trips taken as holiday remained the main purpose of the trip for UK outbound tourists in 2016 followed by visiting friends and relatives and business trips. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, the outbound tourism expenditure of UK travellers crossed US$ 70 billion and is projected to reach US$ 102 billion by the end of 2024. The outbound travel sector in the United Kingdom provides employment on par with other well-known and recognised industries, such as food and electrical equipment manufacturing and machinery and equipment industries.

London has been voted the most desirable city in the world for overseas workers in a global survey of 366,000 people – beating New York, Berlin and Barcelona to take top spot. The UK as a whole slipped down the rankings to fifth most desirable and was previously at second when the poll by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and Totaljobs was last carried out in 2014. The US, Germany, Canada and Australia now all rank higher than Britain in terms of attractiveness.

Crerar Hotels, Holyrood Distillery and Mercat Tours are involved in the the Scotland workshop, organised by VisitScotland, which brings together 40 Scottish suppliers and up to 40 representatives of key travel organisations from different European markets.

The event is in Frankfurt, Germany, from 26 to 28 November and will incorporate market awareness sessions, networking opportunities and one-to-one appointments between Scottish suppliers and European travel trade representatives.

The Isle of Man has been revealed as the best place to live in the British Isles. The findings were unearthed thanks to the HSBC Expat Survey which looked at 33 different countries. An independent global survey of expats, it looked at criteria such as economic stability, wellbeing and family benefits such as finance, education, healthcare and quality of life to provide insights on how countries compare across the globe. The Isle of Man was a new entry to the annual survey yet beat all other places in the British Isles.

EU net migration is falling as more European citizens leave the UK and fewer arrive in the wake of the vote for Brexit, new statistics show. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said net migration in the year to September was 244,000 people – a similar level to early 2014 and down on record levels in the next two years. The number of European citizens arriving has plummeted since the EU referendum, while the number of people from outside the bloc has increased.

Two official studies today provided fresh evidence that the vast majority of international students return home after their studies as figures revealed a new fall in net migration. A study of exit data by the Office for National Statistics covering students who arrived in the country during 2015 and 2016 found that well over 90 per cent either left when their visa expired or were granted permission to stay.
