Let’s talk about men’s health

Let’s talk about men’s health | In the news: data in the UK Data Service collection across the web | Scoop.it
The 10th of June marks the start of Men’s Health Week and, this year, the focus of the annual awareness campaign will be on ‘men’s health by numbers’.

With one in five men in the UK not living long enough to enjoy their retirement, it’s hoped knowing these numbers will prompt men to think more about their own wellbeing, act where needed and vastly improve this statistic.

A landmark report on the state of ageing in Britain has warned that a significant proportion of people are at risk of spending later life in poverty, ill-health and hardship.

Britain is undergoing a radical demographic shift, with the number of people aged 65 and over set to grow by more than 40% in two decades, reaching more than 17 million by 2036. The number of households where the oldest person is 85 or over is increasing faster than any other age group.

Thanks, Tony I’m delighted to be here – as, I understand, the first Secretary of State to attend this conference for some time.

All I can say is that my predecessors didn’t know what they were missing!

You and your organisations represent some of the most exciting work going on in our communities and I’m so pleased to be here to thank you for everything you’re doing and to be inspired by your example.

Because as this year’s theme – “the power of community” acknowledges – you know, better than anyone, why strong communities – well-integrated, socially and economically robust communities – matter so much. In good times and bad, they are glue that binds us.

Revaluing parks and green spaces

Revaluing parks and green spaces | In the news: data in the UK Data Service collection across the web | Scoop.it
Parks and green spaces are arguably the most universal of all our public services. They are used by the entire community, from pre-school children through to retired adults. Green space is a defining part of our local landscape and these publicly owned, civic spaces have something to offer to all.

Whilst we might think our parks and green spaces are pleasant places to stroll in the sun – or play on the swings with children or grandchildren, our new research, Revaluing Parks and Green Spaces, shows these spaces actually deliver over £34 billion of health and well-being benefits to UK residents each year. This represents people enjoying greater life satisfaction including improved physical and mental health, directly from regular use of parks and green spaces.
