This week, Gwynedd council raised concerns that Welsh people of colour will have no tick-box option to indicate they are Welsh and minority ethnic in the 2021 census, as a result of the survey format designed by the Office for National Statistics. This is a bitterly disappointing and frankly astounding omission. It implicitly embeds the dangerous assumption that people of colour aren’t Welsh, or that those who can speak Welsh have to be white.

A BRITISH Sikh group lobbying for Sikhism to be added as a separate ethnicity tick box in the next UK census in 2021 has said it has begun its legal action against the UK government over its rejection of such a categorisation.

Sikh Federation UK claims to have the support of 150 Gurdwaras and Sikh organisations and had issued a “letter before action” to the UK Cabinet Office back in May demanding a review of the UK’s Office for National Statistics (ONS) decision to reject the need for such an additional tick box.

A London Assembly member has called on the Government to add Jainism to the list of religions on the census.

Navin Shah, who is himself a practising Jain, presented his petition – which has more than 5,000 signatures – to Downing Street last Thursday.

Mr Shah, who represents Brent and Harrow, was accompanied by Nemu Chandaria, the chairman of the Institute of Jainology and Harrow West MP Gareth Thomas, chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Jains, along with other community representatives.
